PureSound Blasters VS Stock Snare Wires (Is it worth upgrading?)

So for years I've wondered if there was difference between Puresound Blasters and the Stock snare wires that come with a high end snare drum. Today I decided to put the two of them to a test. I know that if you add more strands it will make a difference in the sound. But thats not the question to me. What I wanted to know was, 20 strand VS 20 strand, how will the Ludwig wires stack up.
Mics, heads, volume levels and eq settings are exactly the same on each recording. I also added a tiny bit of compression to help even out levels but all settings match on that also. Snare drum is a Ludwig LM 402 with a coated Remo Emperor batter head and an Evans hazy 300 snare side head.

Great video! It helped to remind me that I don't need to spend $40 ok snare wires. If there is a difference it's so small that no one would know anyways.

Awesome video man!! I have all Puresound's on all my snares. :) I have the Puresound Blaster 20's, the Custom 20's and the big 30 strands too. This video I can tell the same as what they do for me...they warm up the snare a bit and tighten up and smooth out the snare response and the resident head a bit. Great video and A-B comparison Jeff!! Go Cardinals!!!! :) I had to say it...even though you guys kicked our butt this last series. :) ✌

Cool video! I can hear some difference...nothing too major to my ear, but an improvement on an already amazing sounding snare drum!

Definitely thought the Puresounds were more articulate and added a warmer tone to the drum as a whole. Great sounding snare bro!

The puresounds were tighter, snappier, and more articulate. 30$ more? Probably not. However, your first point about the number of wires is 100% true: 20 strands sound like 20 stands for the most part, but 20 strands sound nothing like 42 or 16 strands.

I just added some sound blasters to my Yamaha Musashi Oak 13x6.5 and man did it improve it. It's got a nice warm full and crisp sound now, the stock snares did not do it justice they made the snare thin and snappy. I almost bought a Pork Pie Little Squealer 13x7 Oak/Maple yesterday on sale because i wasn't liking how my snare sounded but for $20 for the Puresound Sound Blasters it's totally worth it 👍.

I normally use Puresound custom pro 14" brass wires on my snares. I bought the Puresound 14" Blaster snare wires ( because my Guitar Center sucks, and they haven't had the custom pro's in stock for over a year... I hate my local Guitar Center!!!! ) and I noticed immediately, that the blaster wires sounded louder with more snap. I think it's because the butt plate on the blaster wires actually have a bend to them that pushes the wires up against the reso head. Where the custom pro butt plates release the wires from the reso head. Wasn't quite sure if I liked them at first. They made a loud drum even louder, but after playing them for a few weeks, I notice I can loosen the tension on the wires and still have a tight snare sound. But they are definitely louder!!

I heard a difference, as slight as it was, but the Puresound Blasters definitely had more dynamics 'tween to some of the more forceful & less forceful hits, & as Tommy said below, had a warmer tone. I heard the difference with my Boston Acoustics PC speakers -- not headphones.

I noticed the Pure sound to be more crisp and articulate but that could also be if you had the throwoff a little bit tighter than you had with the stock Ludwig wires could make that difference in sound. If you had them identical then i have to say the Pure sound were more crisp when doing a drum roll but otherwise not much sound difference if any most of the video.

They sound completely different, actually with the Puresound I hear a difference in the tone and volume of the drum, did you change any any audio settings on the recording of both??

Puresound 20 strands wires are: 1. Blaster, 2. Custom pro, 3. Brass, 4....? I have had puresound 24 strands (too much) 20 Blaster (great) and I want to try the brass one. Difference between Blaster and custom pro should be only the mounting system right?

I like the puresond blasters on my Pork Pie 10" snare but I built that snare form its abused state..If a snare had wires in good shape I would keep them If I had to buy them to replacedamaged or no wires..NO BRAINER spend for the good stuff
