I tried not tempering a 5160 knife I made. What I found was that as I got it near sharp, the burr would chip off and leave a jagged, dull edge behind. I took the handle back off and tempered to straw color and the problem was solved. Granted, that blade was bit finer edge geometry than you would want on an axe. That. Alone may make a big difference. Lots of variables there, I suppose. Thanks for sharing! I have really enjoyed watching you work.

Enjoying your videos. Thanks for taking the time to make them! Farrier's rasps not a high carbon steel? I've heard they're not as tough as a bastard file, but don't know what alloy they actually are.

I use 5160 on herb choppers all the time and I temper at 450 on a cookie sheet in the oven😂
