This is exactly why I quit reviewing games. We've reached the point of incremental change in the hobby, rather than the massive sweeping changes and new ideas we saw for quite a few years in a row, and I'd often find myself wishing that I was playing (insert game with similar mechanics/theme that I liked better) rather than try to review yet another spin on the same thing. I'm much more careful with my gaming acquisitions now, and I only buy 2 or 3 games per year now, but I did have massive fun for quite a long time jumping from game to game to game. With that said, I find your purge videos to be extremely cathartic, and they do a good job of reminding me why I've changed my gaming 'habits' over time.

If it weren't for the channel and the need to constantly review new games, do you think you'd enjoy games more if you researched more, purchased fewer, sold fewer, and get more plays out of your existing collection? Or do you really like learning games and trying new ones?

I always did this kind of thin, well before the channel started. I do it more now that I have the channel, but I always enjoyed finding more games.

Tyrants of the Underdark is a really excellent game. One of the only combinations of area control & deck building executed perfectly.
@plektosgaming2 жыл бұрын
Except there are better versions of essentially the same (or better) game engine out there. Build a deck, do some area control. The main issue is that it's just so ugly and cheap looking. The cards are almost like cardboard (sleeves are mandatory), the miniatures are 1980s era tacky looking, and the board is this odd purple and black. it looks like a poorly made Kickstarter game. Compare that to Kemet or Inis. Entirely different games, but both are gorgeous and well made.
@VaultBoy132 жыл бұрын
@@plektosgamingWhat game is the Tyrants of the Underdark engine? There's more to the game than simply deck building with area control. - Which ones provide spy hijinx that are actually fun and interesting? - Which ones ensure the card market stays small enough for deck synergies while also providing variety for future plays? - Which ones make it easy to thin your deck to score and improve deck consistency? Second, they're not minis. They were never intended to be minis. There's 220 of them in the box. It would've been stupid, excessive, and expensive for those to be minis. Kemet has like 76 minis and is more than twice the price. It would've been a stupid publisher decision to bling the game up with minis. Last, Kemet has never been an example of a good-looking game. Both versions of the game have a board that looks worse than Tyrants. It's usable, but it doesn't look good. I love Kemet, but it's a flawed production when it comes to the board. Tyrants production isn't perfect, but it's a unique, solid design. It's far better than you give it credit for.
@plektosgaming2 жыл бұрын
@@VaultBoy13 The main issue isn't the design, but the fit and finish. It's... underwhelming for the cost. $50 and it has little cardboard tokens. The exact same card stock as X-Com and other budget games (sleeves are mandatory as you cannot shuffle the cards like a normal deck of playing cards). I mean, if you have the original version, you are lucky. $50 on Amazon for what you get.. It's a good game, but beautiful games do have an edge on remaining on a shelf long-term. Just compare it to Terraforming Mars. Better components at all levels for less money. And that's just one example. I personally think Terraforming Mars is a worse engine with not enough player backstabbing/interaction, but hardly anyone is dumping it from their collection, either as it's like Power Grid - very well made for the money and hard to justify letting go of.

I also forgot to mention the elephant in the room, which is the theme. If it was any modern franchise or movie series it would resonate with the under 40 crowd. 95% of the people I've played it with don't know WHAT The Underdark even is. Make it Game of Thrones or Witcher or... themed and watch it fly off the shelves. A comparable game would be Battlestar Galactica. Fantastic game, great series. Absolutely nobody under 25 has a clue about it and it doesn't even appear on most social deduction board game lists any more except as an honorable mention as well. Such is anything D&D 2nd/3rd edition related. Yes, I know they made a 4th edition book, but that was in 2010, same as BSG. It's been dead IP for over a decade.

I also had to do a massive purge when moving to another country. And Point Salad also left mine. Solid game but not as deep as 7 Wonders Duel (not that it's trying to be) but also not as fast/portable as games like Fluttering Souls or Skulls of Sedlec. So it didn't really have a place in my collection. I combined Stella in my Dixit box, so it's not taking up additional space. I look at it as a variant.

Out of curiosity, what does your collection look like now? I often see these videos, but I don't know what your full collection is like. Also, do you focus on variety in your collection (covering genres and player counts) or focus on keeping what you simply like?

I know we are in a golden age of gaming but .... As an old timer I can remember you would have maybe a few dozen games coming out every year, game magazines folding as there wasn't enough new games to review and you could count on one hand how many you might feel are worth owning. Now there is so much turn over and throw away I just find it hard to be sure this is a golden age.

Both Tyrants of the Underdark and It's a wonderful world are both of my favs so shocked at this! For it's a wonderful world, I find I just find it inherently better than 7 wonders (Put down those rocks..). The engine building and construction/recycling phase leads to a lot more decision making in games than I had in my experiences in 7 wonders. For Tyrants, its in my top 3 games of all time, but maybe you're just getting rid of the 2nd edition? The 1st edition has little shield minis instead of cardboard tokens for its soldiers.

I completely agree with you about It’s A Wonderful World! To me, it kicks the crap out of 7 Wonders (not a big fan of that game). I also prefer Among The Stars to 7 Wonders - as you have the added strategy of building your spaceship, which is also quite thematic!
@blacksheep99502 жыл бұрын
I ended up getting rid of Among The Stars and picking up Fields of Green instead. I prefer the theme of AtS (and the alien species special abilities) but for me FoG flows better because of how scoring works and it has an engine-building element that isn't in AtS.

I think you gotta not worry so much about defending the decision to get rid of something. It'd be a 10 for me if the great compromise part of it was better. But, I find that part to be clunky enough that it drops the score for me a bit. But, the cheap movement (compared to Cthulhu Wars) turns it into big battles with massive armies. It's a blast to play.

I love Five Tribes....at two players. A multiplayer game of Five Tribes with even one player who is AP prone will make you want to murder someone. I seriously think thats what pushed Dahlmer over the edge. Now I gotta wait an hour to hear about why you are getting rid of Magnate so I can decide if we are still going to be friends sigh. DAMMIT your critique of Magnate is more than fair. Also it has paper money which is just awful. Thats probably got to go on my end too. Agree on Point Sald. Its fine but I've got Box Throne shelves so unless I also get rid of Welcome To it won't make any real space so it stays. Prehistories has to go as long as you have Foundations of Rome, Isle of Cats and Planet Unknown.
@JJ_TheGreat2 жыл бұрын
Yeah… My biggest problems with Five Tribes is the fact that you may have to wait 7 turns before you get another turn - and then you see the perfect move while you are waiting, but it is all for not - it is irrelevant because you can’t use the move since it is not your turn. Even more of a problem I have with the game is that it is sooooooo tactical that not only does the board change every turn, but you CANNOT PLAN for your turn until THE TURN BEFORE your turn - because EVERYTHING CHANGES otherwise - and the fact that it is a multi-player (more than 2-player game) makes it a lot different than chess - so even though the board changes after every move in chess, you can respond to every move… Not so much in Five Tribes, unless you are playing with 2 players. Five Tribes was the game to make me realize that I dislike multi-player extremely tactical games.
