I appreciate your video. I completely agree! Many of those signs have been around for decades and don't need to be changed. When I use the sign for family, I use the CL: F handshapes. Signing it the "new" way feels weird. You know how some signs feel right and some just feel wrong. Trust the language, trust your intuition. Who sets the rule that all Deaf and Interpreters must incorporate the new signs. Who decides? For international sign I understand modifying signs to enhance comprehension. I like the way it was. I won't change.

This! You put into words what I couldn't about my reluctant to use the newer versions of FAMILY, CULTURE etc.. I already teach my students about the root/base of Initialized signs such as FAMILY, CLASS, GROUP, DEPARTMENT, LEAGUE, ORGANIZATION, SOCIETY/SOCIOLOGY, TEAM etc all involve people. I encourage my students to use INITIALIZED signs when they have no other choices like AUNT, UNCLE or a RELIGION. And I like your examples of DAYS - WEEK and COLORS

Is there a transcript for sight impaired, or CC for people with limited ASL access? I'd love to see this accessible, as it seems an important reference point from you, someone who is so specialized in the linguistic field!

Latin had always been changing. Even in the time of the Caesars, there was a difference between the formal written language and the Latin Spoken in the street; we have things like graffiti at Pompeii as evidence. And the Latin used by the Church was quite different from the older Classical Language as well; the reason the Latin Bible is called "the Vulgate" is because it was written in newer, different ("vulgar" mean "common/of the people") Latin that later clergy might understand even if they struggled with Seneca and Cicero. In fact, later writers of what we now call Early French, Spanish, and Italian, thought (and said so!) that they were writing in Latin. This idea that they were speaking another language took centuries to seep into the consciousness. And written Latin finally went away (except for the Roman Church and among aficionados) in the 19th c. You can even find things Karl Marx wrote in Latin! TL;dr -- Latin didn't fade away because it was being held onto tightly. It had been changing all along. So had Greek. But Greek pretty much stayed in Greece, so no names were changed (it's a little more complicated than that, but no room for it here).

Hi :) I do understand and respect your opinion. Thank you for sharing your opinion. For me, I find it interesting how you said the people kept the language of Latin the same over the way it was, over time. They did not allow the change or allowing someone to change it. Suddenly, it is a language that had faded away. So... My thought is that if our language of ASL does not evolve over time, would that also mean it would fade away too? It is a fact that ALL languages evolve over time. It is interesting how 'SEE' had so much stigma around it by our Deaf community. Yet, it is okay to keep some signs with the first letter? I find that confusing. I am a big favour in ASL. But personally, I hate spelling the word out (in English, a different language) and prefer to use the sign of a letter as less as possible. Also, for "culture", using that handshape that may seem to be in an negative meaning... But, the movement of the handshape is not showing the negative meaning. It is moving in the direction of a spiral. One day, I will make a video to discuss a bit more about this topic. Thanks again.

1) there is a difference between natural language changes and invented words. That was the problem. They tried to invent signs that were never existent. I saw a film from 1949 and they signed e.g. PLACE with a P. It was WAY WAY WAY before SEE so those who tried to "return" to old signs are erroneous. WATER was here before SEE, as are many signs in ASL. That's why I called it purification and it isn't healthy; 2) fingerspelling IS indeed ASL. Don't assume they are English and fingerspelling English words are far better than inventing signs. 3) the invented sign for CULTURE is far from being accepted in the community. It is still negative, a reduction in something. There is nothing wrong with using the C handshape. Also, spiral movement could be something draining (loss of something), something disappearing (reduction if form)...so you see where they are cognitively negative. Thanks.

Yes thank you for adding that initialized signs we’re around before SEE. And some without initials we would have to rely on lip reading to determine a sign.

In my experience folks who try to "keep the language pure" and free from contact influence tend to be Nationalists, if not outright fascists. I'm not saying that applies to the enthusiastic folks you're talking about, but they are in disturbing intellectual company.
