In this video, we replace our old filtration technology we had when building the house 23 years ago. Creating clean water is important for keeping the homestead running. Having a system that is low in maintenance and cost was critical for us.

Troy, as a designer, there are a couple of things I would suggest. Have another set of filters in parallel pre-piped and ready for use when the primary set needs cleaning. Throw a couple of bypass valves and you are good and in case you have trouble sourcing the filters. Next stock some replacements. Next, a full bypass around the filters for emergencies. UV exposure makes great for anti-bacterial and I'm waiting for one that I can run on low voltage AKA solar. When you think about today's water you either have a filter or you kidneys are the filter...

I'm a plumber by trade for the past 25 years my experience and knowledge is if there are heavy participants in the water carbon filters or any other liked paper filters tend to expire rapidly causing you to replace these types of filters more often and if left unchecked it may cause reduced water pressure. Speaking from personal experience they didn't work for us. We have a system similar to what you were using a cylinder filter system. The first filter is called an eliminator which removes the iron and other heavier particles and second one purifies the water. This system also has a backwash cycle which cleans the media therefore extending its life. My system is expected to last 15 years before the media is recommended to be changed. We farm processed our chickens that we raise to sell where we're at we are required to do a water sample every year because of our filter system we have some of the cleanest and purified water way under what my state requires. The paper type filters work well in the right applications but not for all water systems. Hope this helps.

Wild that Americans even in really high rainfall areas seem not to think of catching the rain off your roof. It's as clean as the air it fell through, so if it's not fit to drink then your air isn't fit to breathe anyway and you need to leave. You don't have to worry about chemicals or minerals in your dirt water if you leave it in the dirt and drink cloud juice instead!

I installed a UV system in our spring-fed cabin -- loving it so far. It has a 5 micron filter prior to the UV, but I do want/need to add a spin-down unit before that.

Troy great information. As for the old well, I bought a place in the late 70 that had a well but was never used. I went to my local well driller and he gave my a old pump to try. He told me how to see how much water a minute I could get. This was a camp in the South Branch of the Potomac River. I put pump in and started pumping water, 20 gallons a minute for over a hour before it started sucking air. The water was RED and took about 2 hours to start to clear up. That summer and for the next 4 or 5 years, before I sold, we used the water and it was clear. So if you put a pump in and run it a long time you just might have some good water. It’s called exercising the well.

You said your post filter was taken from the spin down pre filter drain. You could have some sediment that was on that filter flushing back into that post filter sample. I’d love to see how you shock the well since we are new to well water here on our new homestead. I currently have a RO system for drinking water but may install a pre filter in our well house as well.

I think my biggest concern for water purity now is microplastics. Plastic is so pervasive in our built environment - most houses these days are plumbed with it, and it's in the air, in our rivers and lakes and oceans and soils, in our foods (animals ingest it in their food and water and it ends up deep in their muscle tissue as well as everywhere else) and it's impossible to eliminate it, but the damage it does is dose-dependent so reducing exposure really does matter. I don't trust a water filter to clear the microplastics out of my water when the water filter is built of plastic!

I'm surprised that you didn't add a 3rd filter at the end, a carbon filter to finish the water from the 5 micron filters.

I use a similar filtration system at our camp, we have a silt issue. The spun filters do a good job . I use a 40 micron spin down to a 5 m then a 1 m. I find about every 2 months is a good filter change time. We split our time between home and camp pretty evenly. Leaving them in service longer does affect the quality. Interested to see about the alge source.

PEX does not eliminate the need for a plumber, something about the skill of a professional being needed. We were able to bring in faucets from the system, using the old placements.

I believe the minerals are able to pass through the Berkey. I would be concerned if the mineral level was too low. Like drinking distilled water. It would dilute the level of minerals in your body. At least that’s how I understand it.

@@tubesurfing In addition to calcium, some other minerals commonly found in water that can be beneficial for your health in moderation include magnesium, potassium, and trace minerals like iron and zinc. These minerals can contribute to your overall mineral intake and have various health benefits. However, excessive intake of any mineral, including calcium, can have negative effects, so it's important to maintain a balanced and varied diet. If the well water contains beneficial minerals but requires treatment due to other issues, you can consider water treatment methods that preserve the essential minerals while addressing any contaminants or issues. Common water treatment options include filtration systems, water softeners, and reverse osmosis. It's essential to strike a balance between preserving the beneficial minerals and ensuring the water is safe to drink. You might want to consult with a water treatment professional to determine the best approach for your specific situation.

A healthy diet should give you all the minerals you need. If it doesn't, you've probably got too many plants commercially grown on dead dirt and NPK fertiliser instead of home grown on good healthy compost.
@FaithwalkerTodd
@FaithwalkerTodd 4 ай бұрын
@@tealkerberus748 a healthy diet includes well water. Your body is made up of 70% water. The only way to get water in and out of the cell is with sodium. Without sodium all you’re doing is bathing the outside of your cells.

@@FaithwalkerTodd And if the minerals you need aren't in your food, you're eating wrong. The water you drink mixes with the food you eat in your stomach and intestine, and your body will absorb the minerals you need better if they're in an organic matrix than inorganic dissolved minerals.

This is interesting, however I wonder how I would purify my (municipal) water in the event of an "event" - to get rid of the flouride. An RO system isn't possible for me in an apartment, and the Berkey filters are spotty in availability.

@@RedToolHouse No no I don't, not at all. And I gain knowledge as well as entertainment from watching, I see the value in that. Channels receive revenue for me watching and being subscribed, creators shouldn't have to shame themselves by ham-acting their way through yet another 'review'. Well good luck to you anyway, it's been informative and enjoyable. I'm out, Peace 🙂

We receive ZERO revenue by you watching and being subscribed. We only receive a fraction of income from you watching the ADS that pop up during the video. So AD revenue is the only source of income. So you are saying it is ok to watch KZbin’s advertising but not the actual creators who are at least getting the products they promote? You should see the list of stuff I turn down. Serious question for you. Would you be willing to pay a monthly fee to a creator in exchange for videos that never offer paid promotions?
@stevemorris3710

@@RedToolHouse Maybe the percentage rises as you get more views/Subscribers then? I know the large established channels make good income just from the KZbin ads being watched, perhaps that will come to you in time as your channel grows. Taking as an example perhaps, the first time I saw a video where Bluetti had 'reached out' to the creator, it piqued my interest and I researched the possibility of purchasing one. For sure, next time I sat down to watch a few Farming or Camping videos, there's no way I'm going to sit through a raft of identical 'reviews'. On the subject of paying for promotion free videos, Yes, I would, but it would be too expensive and poor value for me to pay say $5 per month, to each of 100 channels.
@RedToolHouse
@RedToolHouse 8 ай бұрын
Percentage does not change as the channel grows. It is all about the volume of views of ads. The more views a video gets the more ads get watched. We get about 5000 views on a typical video. That equates to about $25. I vet every product I use and show on the channel. I still use those products. The solar generators especially. At some point, I will do a video sharing my experience with them all long term. I try to post content that has value to the viewers and not just be fluff. Getting compensated for that without compromising the core of the content is the challenge. I will continue to share products that help me reach my goals on my farm. If it causes people to leave, then there isn’t much I can do otherwise. At some point, the channel will become irrelevant and I will stop. I really do appreciate your input. Helps me understand where people are coming from.
