people are free to believe as they choose but it makes me so sad hearing the boy say “i just wanted to be a drummer”, it kinda seems like he’s doing it to impress his father or that his father is making him become a masong to carry on his and his families reputation

even well into adulthood, the kid inside wants to be loved by their parents. Maybe he’ll figure out when he gets older he can be loved in other ways. Many don’t and become addicted to all kinda of things to feel loved/numb out in some way. Like going into football, bc a father loved/did football.

Maybe so, but in the clip, the boy clearly said that he originally wanted to be a drummer, before the Gods invited him in a dream. His dad said he wanted to stop being a Masong (spirit vessel) but when Earth told him he was chosen, he agreed to continue being one to guide his son. Ofc the kids might’ve been heavily influenced by their upbringing but he sounded very genuine in the clip (speaking as a Thai person, this clip was very well made especially the translations)

@@veraaurelis8931 i mean “it came to me in a dream” is very reminiscent of what kids in church say when they are trying to fit in with their elders. it’s not far off from what happens in a baptist church, not that these people are evil, it’s just societal pressure for every person involved i think. but i respect your opinion and you likely know more than I as a thai person so good day my man

Just because something is a rite of passage or a tradition in another culture, doesn't mean it isn't barbaric and bordering on child abuse, especially if the child is heavily influenced, or has no choice in the matter. Just because something is painful, doesn't mean it makes you stronger. Idc I said what I said and I'll probably catch flak for it.

The messed up part is really the child stating that he didn’t even want to do what his dad does he just wanted to be a drummer and the fact that his dad basically says “he has duties to follow” basically is them telling you this child does not want to be harmed he is just in it for the family and the music aspect because it seems cool of course children love music. But it’s sad to see the dad was going to leave and stayed due to a dream any child can make up. Especially a child who is trying to do something they like and won’t be able to do it otherwise. Let’s use common sense here.

This unique tradition is very similar to the one in Kalimantan or Borneo, we Indonesians call it Tatung It is usually celebrated together with Cap Go Meh, which is the 15th day after Imlek or Chinese New Year. In Indonesia, it is not only the Chinese community who carry out this tradition, but also the indigenous Dayak tribes in Kalimantan or Borneo who participate. They parade around with ornate tattoos, piercing their extreme faces and bodies, wear tribal clothes with monkey skull necklaces and they also claim they are possessed by the spirits of the gods and ancestors.

I couldn’t ever understand this, especially the fact of them being possessed. To me doesn’t seem could ever be peace at the end of that. But what works for one may not work for others. How I found my peace took alot of meditation and healing and praying. I never had to step out of myself or feel another spirit inside myself. For me it’s freedom in the mind. However it hasn’t happened over night. This seems like something that’s automatic for them. Idk if it’s something I’d ever dapple with. But I respect different religions and beliefs even if it’s something I’d never believe in. It’s the passion and dedication that’s put into it. Humans really have so much inner strength to overcome or do anything. Hence why I truly believe in manifestation and speaking things into existence. I’m more on that path and healing from my trauma of my past. It feels nice to slowly see the growth & how I’m changing as a person and setting boundaries, finding that love within and keeping around like minded peaceful people. Everyone’s journey is so different. I pray everyone finds peace and healing 🫶🏽✨

As someone who doesn’t believe in gods and deities. I found this hilarious, cruel and unnecessary. Obviously an interesting doc by Vice as always. Got my eyebrow pierced back in 1992, for shits and giggles I thought it looked cool. Got trapped in an arran jumper and it had to go. This is far to F’d up.

I partly agree. I mean, the adults there can do whatever they want, they can destroy their body as much as they want, but the children? definitely no. No child should be allowed to go through that traumatizing situation, it's just pure cruelty for the children.

If I was that kid I’m not telling anybody about that dream haha. No facial stabbing for me no way no how no sir. As a Mom I would say to my son absolutely NOT, you’re not putting sharp objects through that beautiful face I spent 40 weeks creating and however many years nurturing! If adults want to channel the God/s then I wish them every strength and peace on that journey but leave the kid’s face alone please.😭🙏🏻😭

Thanks for the descriptions that I read in the comments. I can’t see the video so if there’s subtitles, I won’t see them. Nobody’s providing a voice track. Like the kind of voice track you have in a movie described pro visually impaired people. There’s no such DVS services here. But thanks anyway for the comments. I can’t understand the language. Just for grins, are there actually subtitles? For use people who 3:06 can see are there any like English subtitles?

When a child doesn’t feel convinced of what they are saying. It’s imposing imo. But hey. Not my kid, right? Just a fully developed adult with life experience and the spirit of discernment, casting “judgement” from the other side based on soul vibes.

Very similar to Thaipusam for Tamil Hindus, Tamil Hindus/Buddhists were extremely influential in Thailand,. Thai script descends from the Tamil Pallava Script, Tamil Brahmin Priests from Rameswaram were the ones who anointed the original Thai king, their descendants still live their today and consecrated the most recent King Rama as well while singing ancient Tamil Hymns. The links are endless between them culturally and liturgically.

Probably that's correct, however this ritual is descended from Chinese Taoism culture, not directly related with Indian culture. These guy are Chinese descendents I believe.
