Khentrul Sangay Tenzin, born in 1969 in Wamrong, Bhutan, was recognized as the Tulku of Bötrul Dongak Tenpe Nyima by HH Penor Rinpoche. He was enthroned at Dzongnang Monastery in Nepal and later completed his MA in Buddhist Philosophy at the Nyingma Institute in Martam, India. In 2002, he was enthroned as Khenpo by his root master, Khenchen Rigzin Dorjee Rinpoche, under whom he also completed a three-year retreat. Khentrul Rinpoche has studied under prominent Buddhist masters, including Penor Rinpoche and Chatral Rinpoche.
He has served as the Principal of the Nyingma Institute and was enthroned as the regent of Khenchen Rigzin Dorjee Rinpoche in 2018. In Bhutan, he established several retreat centers aimed at rigorous three-year retreats for practitioners. He currently leads a humble life, guiding the third batch of Tsampas at Chamgang and Wamrong. He was conferred the honorary title of Khenchen by Kyabje Rigzin Dorjee Rinpoche.
