don't use round holes! crescent holes prevent starlings.

Nice video, there is absolutely nothing wrong with starting with the starling resistant entires (SREH). Martins can in and out of them easily and take a lot of the frustration out of fighting starlings. More and more martins are born and raised in houses with SREH and they can navigate them without a problem.

Where can I get the long Aluminum pole and what size is it ? Otherwise, will a wood pole work ?

ruten45 Here's a link to an adjustable pole and also a website that has different pole options. DC: We tried for years to attract Martins using rinky dink houses and poles. We purchased a Troyer T 14 model from a fellow Martin Birder who made houses, poles and winches ($1,000.00) We installed the pole and within 1 month we had Martins checking it out. We have had a full colony for over 8 years now and really like taking care of the birds.

silly question for someone who isnt very knowledgeable. i live in NJ...so first off....are they here? and second...wouldnt constant monitoring bother them and make them wanna leave? if you opened my bedroom wall every 5 to 10 days id move to a new house lol

+Joe Kehoe Purple martins would normally be in your area during the summer for breeding. Especially in the east, they almost only nest in boxes and martin houses.

It actually the exact opposite of what you think! The Martins actually like to be around human interaction. They feel safer from predators knowing that humans are around. When ever you do a nest check they just flay away and watch, then when its over they just fly right back.
