Glad you covered this grass & winter sowing it. I seed saved some Indian Grass this Fall and think I will Winter Sow it like you did for the Purple Top grass here.

I pretty much winter sow everything anymore. It is just the easiest way to do it.

Thank you for the video. I have seen this or a similar grass growing along railroad tracks in the country.

Autumn of '24 I sowed two packets of these seeds along with Elliot's Lovegrass and a "Roadside Wildflower Mix" along the front edge of my yard. I will have to wait until spring to see what germinates. After seeing this, I know I am unlikely to notice the purple hue of the purpletop. That said, I have a septic leech field in my front yard that has been stripped bare. Before I get more purpletop, I am curious how this would handle being mowed at 4" until August and then left to grow to seeding? And how likely are the roots to go deep enough to invade the leech pipes?

Hi - regarding mowing, I can't state how well it will handle frequent mowing. But I can say that since it is in hay fields, it is cut multiple times per year. Regarding the root depth, I really couldn't find much info on it. But, similar height grasses that like dry weather can regularly reach 4-5' in depth. Still though, most of the root mass is shallow. See the diagram here (scroll down a bit) - growitbuildit.com/little-bluestem-facts-information-growing/#ID It shows several species of native grass with their root depths.

It really has a wide native range. You can see it pop up all over.
