As a fan from back then, the trade for Tarkenton did SEEM to open the window for the next bunch of years, but it was really the drafting of Chuck Foreman the next year that did it. It was obvious from the get-go that he was going to be the difference-maker. He was Aaron Jones on steroids (not literally, lol), way before his time. They were setup for the next 5 years (Tarkenton broke his leg in '77 which sabotaged that season). And yes, the roster was already old by 1978, but when Foreman hurt his knee early that season, THAT'S what slammed that door shut. And then everyone else retired, lol.

There have been moments when the O-line looked rough but look at the teams we played: Giants, 49ers and Texans. Three teams many analysts said were top 10 defensive lines in the league before the season started. Those D-lines were gonna get their wins. Our O-line has looked well above average so far.

If Vikings are serious about winning a Super Bowl, it would be a good idea IMHO to make a good offer to Darnold if he keeps up playing great this year, to keep in him in the QB room for a couple of years. Injuries happen a lot, and it would be great if the QB2 wasn't a total hot mess when trying to make a Super Bowl.

By the time Flores leaves he will have already laid down the blue print for smash mouth defense. So that his defense will be analyzed by every other defensive coordinator in the league and most will be reverse engineering his defense to their needs. We can most likely pick up someone from the Flores tree to carry on with our defense.
