Judd on a AWD/4wd vehicle you want all the tires to be the same size ( height/circumference ) . Having one or two tires that are a different height/circumference can cause driveline issues. So if you have 3 tires that have some wear and you put a new tire on ( 4th one ) , you could have the potential for a bigger problem then the tire itself. A different size tire will travel at different rpm/speed then other tires for the same distance traveled. And this could make one of the computers unhappy and it could throw a code and cause a trouble light to come on the dash( like ABS light ) . If you can't replace all 4 you should at least replace them in pairs. You still might have a problem but it cuts the chances down slightly.

The thing about replacing all 4 tires is overblown. The difference in tread has to be extreme, and you have to leave it that way for a long time for it to do any damage to your transmission, generally. Not saying it isn't possible, but it is unlikely. It is, however a very convenient line for tire shops, as they are guaranteed to sell more tires.

The reason they recommend all 4 tires on an awd vehicle is you want to keep similar diameter between all 4 wheels, if there is an extreme difference it can cause issues with the awd drivetrain, differentials etc. Also with all 4 tires being drive tires you can get pulls or torque pulls due to a diameter difference. Same with any fwd or rwd drive tires.

Reason for changing all 4 tires; The differentials and transfer case try to make up for this by turning one tire slightly slower to match the rotation speed of the tire with more tread. Drivetrains are not designed to do this constantly and they can be damaged by having one tire with a lot more tread than the other three.

It's absolutely critical that tires are replaced in sets on an AWD vehicle and also not just replacing all 4 with different brands or models as different brands and models of same size very according to tread depth/height which varies on every tire. And while some vehicles you might be able to get away with it for awhile maybe even a few years but the main reason is because different diameter tires roll a different number of times each mile as a result of the variations in their circumference. Four-wheel drive and all-wheel drive vehicles are equipped with additional differentials and/or viscous couplings that are designed to allow momentary differences in wheel speeds when the vehicle turns a corner or temporarily spins a tire. However, if the differentials or viscous couplings are forced to operate 100% of the time because of mismatched tires, they will experience excessive heat and unwarranted wear until they fail.

It's a curious dynamic we have with our receivers....assuming all healthy. As good as Jjets is, because of that, he may never even get close to 2k yds in a KOC system. It's an interesting challenge for KOC.....and the quarterback, and if Jjets will remain comfortable with a pedestrian box score due to drawing double teams and bracket coverage; as long as the team is winning.
