This is about another heartwarming rescue mission was undertaken to aid an innocent giant suffering from a severe leg injury, which had swollen badly and developed into an abscess. The elephant was first spotted by a villager who is frequently visiting to the forest in search of firewood .For several times,he saw this giant limping in difficulty with badly swollen hind leg. Deeply moved by the plight of this innocent giant, the villager promptly informed the nearest wildlife office regarding the distressed elephant.
Wildlife officers are always willing to help the endangered giant in any kind of situation. A team comprising veterinary surgeon, wildlife officers and civil defense force officers quickly dispatched to the location. Soon they could locate the injured giant. First thing they had to do is sedate the elephant, as encountering untamed wild elephants, especially in pain, is highly risky. The veterinary surgeon observed the elephant from a distance and prepared the sedative drugs based on its body weight.
They darted the elephant taking the correct aim. The drug gets active and sedates the elephant within five to ten minutes, making him fall down in the forest. The vets hurry themselves to the sedated elephant and start examining him. Its left hind leg was punctured with a gunshot wound, which had become swollen and developed into an abscess. The swelling was due to pus accumulation as the wound had become infected.
The treatment began with thorough cleaning of the abscess. Incising and draining is the standard method used for this. Pus was drained from the abscess. Then using sterile cotton swabs and forcep, the necrotic tissues in the wound were carefully scraped off. This step was crucial, as the presence of necrotic tissues impedes the wound healing process
After a thorough cleaning, the cavity left by draining the abscess and the wounded area was thoroughly rinsed with disinfectant solution. Disinfecting solution was injected in using a syringe to ensure proper cleaning.
The dedication of the officers is evident throughout the treatment mission. Wildlife officers provide invaluable support in preserving the lives of wild animals. However, their life is challenging, as they spend most of their time to outdoor activities regardless of weather conditions, whether it's day or night. They are in the field daily, facing challenges with limited resources and facilities.
The remaining exudates and necrotic tissues were further removed using cotton swabs. Following this, the wounded area was once again flushed with a saline solution.
After thorough cleaning, they proceeded to apply medication. Povidone iodine solution was injected into the wound cavity using a syringe to ensure thorough coverage and expedite healing. Povidone iodine is an antiseptic drug that kills harmful infection-causing microorganisms, thereby promoting faster wound healing.
Then, they prepared a mixture of povidone iodine and negasant to be applied to the wound. A cotton swab soaked in this mixture was inserted into the wound cavity to enhance absorption. The mixture was also carefully applied to the surface of the wound too.
Afterward, all the injured areas were externally coated with a bluish antiseptic fly repellent spray. Once all these treatments were completed, the vets decided to promptly revive the elephant. It is not advisable to keep such a large elephant under sedation for an extended period.
They took every possible action to heal the elephant. With all the necessary measures implemented, the veterinarian is confident in his recovery. However, the elephant will need to undergo several rounds of antibiotic treatment until he achieves complete recovery. He is lucky to be found by a group of saviours to save his life.
Forest rangers have been appointed to monitor the progress of the elephant until he is fully cured, which is sure to happen.
After approximately 10 minutes following the administration of the revival drug, the elephant regained consciousness and woke up with a loud trumpeting noise.
The officers plan to revisit the forest within three days to administer antibiotic treatment to the elephant.
