Center tapped transformer is used in the push-pull amplifier circuits (Class A, Class B and Class AB). The difference between center tapped and normal transformer is that in center tapped transformer there are 2 output voltages whereas in normal transformer there is only 1 output voltage.

Centre tapped transformer just gives 2 secondary output voltages based on the turns ratio. (By adjusting the tappings) The voltage across first half of secondary will be, Va= (Na/Np) * Vp And Voltage across second half of secondary will be, Vb= (Nb/Np) * Vp Where, Na= number of turns in the first half of secondary Nb= number of turns in the second half of secondary Np= number of turns in primary Vp= voltage across primary If the tapping is at centre, the output will be exact half of the input, ie, for example 24v input will be split to +12v and -12v
