Hi Hashim, I bought my M4 in the same shop in Japan as you did! Found it funny because I have been following your channel for 3 years with much joy and love. Then I watched your M4 video or rather Japan vlog2 and saw exactly you in exactly that very shop. I love using my M4 since I got it there in 2017. Enjoy yours! Love and thanks, Ralf in Germany

Thanks man! nothing but good old Kodak Gold too. I'm starting to learn how much more the light, subject, and actual color palette of the "set" is, than the film stock or camera whenever I get shots back like that. Everyone dreams of Kodachrome and such, but there's a lot to be said for the scene you're actually shooting, and even how it's exposed and processed :-)

Wise choice. I bought an M4 Midland new in 1974, and it's handling and feel have become second nature over time. I have taken travel pictures with it, family pictures and won awards with more artistic pictures. The only lenses I own are the 35mm Summicron and a 90mm Tele-Elmarit. They're all I need.

Awesome rundown and great photos! I really enjoy everything you do on the channel. Currently weighing the pros and cons of the M3 with an external viewfinder for 28 and 35mm lenses versus the M4. The M-A seems like an excellent option for a number of reasons, but that’s a significant step up in price for sure.

You’ve done some fantastic work it. I recently got a M4 (after selling my M7) as I love the styling of the original full mechanical Ms, wanted the quick load system, and can live without the meter built in. Miss the M7’s aperture priority mode, but the M4 handles like a dream.

I bought my M3 10 years ago and have loved shooting with it. I agree with your comment, get whatever lenses you want and shoot with them, especially considering today's prices. I personally bought a Leica body so I could shoot with Leica glass. I have a 50mm summicron DR and a 35mm goggled summaron. I absolutely love the images I get with these lenses. I've been curious about the Zeiss lenses but not enough to buy one. I've been wanting to buy an M6 for some time now but the prices have gotten ridiculous. I'm considering buying an M4 but what I really want is a new MA. I learned photography and shot with a Nikon FM for 10 years before I bought the M3. I bought a Nikon FE about 6 months ago and love that camera. Ironically, I'm looking out for a good condition Zeiss 35mm f2 ZF.2 for the FE.

I've had an M4 for several years and absolutely love it. After a year or so I invested in an M5, which although not very popular, is a great body. I know own an M6 and I still find myself using the M4 more often. I wanted the 28mm lens & that's why I got the M6. Like you I use Zeiss lenses more than Leica lenses. I've got the 28mm, 35mm & 50mm Zeiss lenses. I've also got a Summacron 90mm. The Leica cameras make great travel gear due to small size & reliability. If you've got the money you can't go wrong with it.

Such a well done review! I’ve owned an M3 and M8 for some time now and adore them. Carrying and using them is a joy. Aesthetics are important to me. It probably sounds foolish but I just feel good carrying around both of these. When I bought each of them, several years apart, they cost about $2,000.00 US. I love their straightforward design and aesthetics. Much of my work is monochrome street or documentary. I’m rather fond of old Soviet lenses bought on eBay. Some are delightfully nostalgic and render timeless images. Keep up the fine work.
@Kref3 Жыл бұрын
I can only suggest that everybody, who wants to own a Leica M and not spend M6 money to also check the M5. It is cheaper than the M4, comparable in price to the M4-P and - if well maintained - meters perfectly, Actually even better than the M6, because it has a much tighter metering spot. You do not have a center weighted meter like in the M6, but almost a spot meter, allowing you to measure shadows and highlights separately. And it is - just like the M4 - built in Germany by hand with brass and all the things that made the early M cameras special. Qualitywise M2, M3, M4 and M5 are the special cameras. I owned an M6 some years ago, I do own an M5 now. And I actually think that it is the better camera - ergonomics and near spot metering make it my favorite M. I do not care about the looks very much. The size is ok.

Timithy I have had mine for a little over a year now. I love it. Light meter is extremely accurate and I love the design of the shutter speed dial. Most of the focusing issues at f/1.5 will be due to slight user error or camera being slightly out of calibration.

@pushingfilm4 жыл бұрын
Nice, I have a lot of interest in the MA... what made you finally go with that over the other two?
@vangstr4 жыл бұрын
@@pushingfilm The MP was great but the only thing I disliked about it was that the light meter had to be turned off at "B" setting every time if not used. Secondly, the meter simply made me a really lazy photographer and I never found myself trusting my own judgement of reading light (sunny 16). Hence, I replaced it with an M3. The M3 was great! No metering meant I really got good at reading lighting conditions. It was so freeing for me to use a camera without any electronic crutches. By the way, the M3 was actually heavier than the MP by a few grams. After a year with the M3, I finally replaced the M3 with the MA because the M3 did not have a contrasty rangefinder patch compared to the MA/MP; I always wished the M3 optics was better. The MA and MP both have the latest super contrasty viewfinder rangefinder patch. The MA was pure analog (no electronics) and had the best of the viewfinder optics as that of the MP which the M3 lacked. The MA is perfect for me, NO METER and has the latest viewfinder/rangefinder glass for that ultimate contrast and NO glare issue!!!! I have the all chrome black which is simply gorgeous :)
@pushingfilm4 жыл бұрын
@@vangstr Interesting, I find that all quite relatable.. even more reason why I see the MA as the preferred option I would go for after the M4. I absolutely love that chrome black finish, and of course, the newer viewfinder and extra frame lines would be nice

I have had a M7, M3 and M4 and I cannot agree more. The M4 is the best mechanical M camera. The Reveni Lab meter provides now a great option to fill in the gap too.

For sure! it's great that there are more smaller companies making compact and useful light meters, meaning you don't have to hunt for a vintage one anymore

I would recommend a soft release button. You can handheld at least 1 stop lower.

nice to see there are some options that won't cost and arm and a leg 😬

your exposure is really great, I'm guessing with practice you just get better without a light meter

Yeah it becomes second nature eventually, and also; the shots shown in this video are amongst favourites, I've messed up plenty of exposures along the way!

Just had a brief look at eBay. The deal you got for the camera was crazy good. It was more like Bessa money.

Your shots are so true to life. Great shots as always. BTW, because of your channel I bought a nikon FE which is my favourite camera as well. Anyway, how do you scan your negatives those are so sharp. Keep posting please. Cheers!
@pushingfilm4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Haha yes, love the FE. My scans in this video are from a mixture of methods. The sharpest ones are from DLSR-"scanning" and using Negative Lab Pro. The majority of them are from the Biogon 2.8 lens though, which is crazy sharp (probably accounts for most of it)
@edgardoramos56394 жыл бұрын
@@pushingfilm Thanks. I will definitely try the DSLR/Mirrorless scanning. Your videos are so inspiring and make me wanna shoot more. Just so sad that this Corona is a hindrance to go outside more. Also, it is rainig cats and dogs here in the Philippines.

I love how you say the idea that Leica is the only glass to use is “crap”. I have Voigtlander lenses and they are excellent. Also, Zeiss makes great lenses as you stated. As far as rangefinders the Zeiss Ikon is an excellent camera as an alternative to Leica. Thanks for the great review. Leica is nice but overpriced and not necessary for great photography. (I would love to own a Leica film body though)

Have you thought about carrying 2 bodies with different focal lenses during your travels? One for street and the other for close up portraits. Your photos are amazing!!
@pushingfilm4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! I do that for weddings and other work sometimes, but for travel I think I would prefer 1 camera :-)

I've got an m4-p for 1.5 years with Biogon 2.8 28mm and now ordered Sonnar 1.5 50 because Biogon is awesom so Sonnar also should be )

I recently pick up the Canon P to get a feel for a rangefinder. Feels nice and solid and see why people like rangefinder focusing, however the camera I feel its an extension of my body is the Pentax MX, One day i really want to compare it to a leica, small and reliable with great lenses.

Awesome video man thank you for sharing. I purchased an M4 with a new Zeiss 35 f2 Biogon several years ago and love it. At the time of purchase I wanted an M6 but wanted a Leica so bad I went with what I could afford at the time and the M4 was highly regarded. The M6’s were going for around 2k back then but now they are so expensive. Mine could do with a CLA do you have any recommendations in Aus? I would love to send to YYE Camera but I am worried about sending it overseas.
@pushingfilm4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching it! I used 2 of the only experienced Leica repairers available here, but I got quite unlucky with the quality and success if the service in my case which is what resulted in the use of both repairers and also multiple returns to the second one before they eventially realised their error. For that reason I wish I sent it to YYE, it actually would have worked out cheaper and saved me so much time. I totally understand the fear to ship it though, as thats also what deterred me at initially.

Pushing Film thank you for your feedback man. I am sorry to hear you had a bad experience and it is not the first time I have heard of this, unfortunately. It might just pay for me to take the chance and send it to the best in the industry. Keep up the great content, I’ll check out some more of your videos soon 👍

Great video, and your pictures are very fine; a whole step above the usual random "street" photos that folks show on KZbin. Also, yes, there are a number of 90mm options for the Leica, but I think the Tele-Elmarit is the best compromise between size, sharpness and cost. As you have discovered, there's no need for f1.1 lenses for outdoor photography.

Note for the M4-2; it’s cheaper, but still just as worth as the M4 the only thing i wish it had was an actual iso reminder dial.

what made you decide on the zeiss 35 f/2.8 over the f/2? i have the 28mm zm and love 35mm focal length, i cant seem to decide!
@pushingfilm2 жыл бұрын
It was cheaper, more compact, and I didn't see the benefit of f/2 over 2.8 with the way I use this lens most of the time (not that it wouldn't be nice for the occasional portrait or low light shot! But, most my stuff with this lens is stopped down street work)

Which version of the Sonnar is that? Are there different productions?
@pushingfilm3 жыл бұрын
Hey, as far as I know, it's the last and only version made (by Zeiss). There may have been some different batches in regards to the optimisation of the focus, and I believe mine is optimised for F2.8 (older batch) meaning it will front-focus a little bit at 1.5
