Dave has clearly been flying business class for a long time now that he doesnt realize that the rest of us peasants still travel in economy. And yes, the best deals are always non-refundable and non transferable unless you pay a fee of anywhere from $100 to 250 depending on the airline. I know this because I travel 4 times a year but usually fly basic economy because it saves me more money and it's no different than economy if you know how to pack.

As a freelancer in your first year, you have very little security in being able to make the same amount from month to month. Also, I may be wrong, but based on her prior decisions, I find it very unlikely that she’s setting aside enough for taxes, which aren’t getting taken out of that $11k.

This is great advice that more people need to hear. Just because it’s a good deal doesn’t mean you can afford to go, especially if you still have debt. If I was this girl, my friends and family would probably be like “YOLO! You’ll just earn the money back no biggie.” The worst part is I had that mindset too back then and probably gave the same bad advice. Paris and Amsterdam will still be there in a few years. Traveling can wait a year until you’re financially stable. Don’t let social media get to you!

I am not certain that they considered all the possibilites here. She said that she is a freelance writer. that is a career that can be done from anywhere. If she took her laptop along with her, and kept working through the vacation at a nice coffee shop along the Seine, she might have been able to fully cash flow a good time while either not touching the $1000, or else immediately reimbursing it. That could be especially lucrative depending on what kind of writing she did, if writing a travel blog article is anywhere near her wheelhouse. Also, Dave's statement that travel on the cheap isn't a fun time is highly dependent on the personality of the traveler. I find the cheap/free activities to be my absolute favorite (tent camping on BLM land in the western US, National Parks, Geocaching) Especially when you are in your 20's, a budget vacation can be just as memorable and fun as blowing tons of cash.

So I happen to live in Europe. She is flying into and out of two very expensive cities. It sounds like she is only traveling with 1000 dollars. Food, hotels and transportation will blow right through that in no time, even if she is only staying at youth hostels, she would not have enough for food bought in grocery stores and train tickets. If she wanted to go into any attractions, there would be no money for those expenses either.

She should have used credit card points from a Chase Sapphire Preferred to pay for the flight and stayed cheaply in hostels while in Europe. I have been to 33 countries that way. Of course, this girl needs to be making more money before taking that kind of trip, but I regularly pay $2000 for a month-long trip to Europe. If you are into traveling, Debit cards are not the way to go as if your information gets stolen, you only have two days versus 30-60 days with a credit card. I use a credit card and pay it off at the end of each cycle. I am waiting for the Dave cult to scream at me.

I've met a lot of western backpackers who are exactly like who you've described running away from their lives. I'm 30 and from the Philippines by the way, I don't earn as much as westerners my age (especially when I started) but I have a lot more net worth than them. I've met a few Americans who were traveling while they still had student debt. They pretend like they're frugal because they backpack on the cheap but man I could never imagine myself spending 6 months traveling while on negative net worth. I've even met a dutch woman, she was in her 20s and though not as bad Americans but even she had debt. These people basically "save" a whole year to blow it all in 6 months in cheap hostels. Seems like a waste of time, money and work experience to me. I started with a 500usd a month salary, then doubled it by my mid 20s and now I earn around 1750usd per month. I lived with my parents and siblings, drive a used car... Even with my 3rd world salary, I manage to save around 60,000usd while these western kids are running around with negative net worth.

@@indiaxlovee Honestly it's true, I did a lot of backpacking when I was a teen and those are some of the best memories I have. Even now, in my mid-20s, travel just feels different, I just don't feel that desire to gogogo and get into all sorts of adventures all the time anymore. I can't even imagine how different it will be a decade down the line. Not everything is about money in life...

@blackworldtraveler3711
@blackworldtraveler3711 4 жыл бұрын
leadnsteel Don’t have to spend thousands of dollars. Just being in the Air National Guard I flew Space-A hopping flights everywhere. Flying a C-130 or C-5 from Oklahoma connecting in California and /or Alaska to Hawaii cost me $12 one way. And military discount at hotels in Waikiki including Bellows beach cottages near Kaneohe.. And hiking/backpacking on beautiful government owned forest reserves closed to public. And have lifetime global flight benefits at work that allows me to fly free everywhere I go and stay in budget,hotels,hostels,guesthouses,capsules, with families,friends,etc. through the years. Eat and stay more with locals away from tourist areas. And I’ve met many straight out of high school or college and in between traveling the world with savings and/or working odd jobs along the way for 6 months to one or more years. They were pretty good at finding cheap airline tickets among other things like trains and buses. Mostly I meet Europeans,Canadians,Australians,and Israelis doing this. Very few Americans. Meet a lot of Japanese as well but they tend to save/stockpile a lot money then travel. I travel to see and experience the food,people,culture,etc and what I’ve read about and learned in school, watched in movies/tv,magazines,etc. Just watching others experience life on tv, in books,etc isn’t enough for me.

Coming from the UK you can go around Paris and Amsterdam relatively cheaply. Just stay in hostels, it’s what all young people do. I wouldn’t burn $500 dollars when she can still have a great time there for not a huge amount more. Europe isn’t like America, there are loads of things you can do for free or cheaply in those cities. Museums, art exhibitions, free walking tours. You don’t have to stay at fancy hotels or eat at overpriced restaurants.

Trip20 I’ve been to France more than once and several dozen other countries. Always eat and stay where the locals go as far away from tourist areas I can. Food just as good and even better, cheap,and less sterile snobby people. I travel for the food ,people,sites,and culture. That’s why I’m there. Also prefer to rent an apartment for a few weeks on occasion blending in with locals and just buy local food/spices and cook myself/ourselves. A want a sample of what I’ve read about in books, magazines,learned about in school, etc.since 4th grade. The finest restaurants and hotels isn’t my thing. Dave could just stay in the U.S and do that if all he can say about Paris is finest hotels and finest restaurants.
