Whether taking a risk pays of or not i feel is not the most important (as long as the family farm is not in play). Having a good read on the situation and acknowledging that an action can be a risky bet is more important overall

I am actually very interested, why didn’t you chi the 3 of circles when left lord dealt it in east 1? Your hand was already open I’m not saying it was a bad choice, just want to think more like a higher level player so I can make it out of the silver room

If you're okay with insight from a very bad Gold Room player, I think he passed on the Chi because then the hand would've been lacking a pair. That pair of the 2s would've been broken up into a 123 and a 234. Every hand needs a pair and securing a good pair is important. If leftlord had dropped a 2 or a 5 of circles instead, then calling Chi, preserving the pair of the 2s while completing the 34, would've been a lot more tempting.

what GniefFiar said! basically, i'm counting on the 2 of circles being my pair, and if i were to chii the 3 of circles, then i would have to find another pair. it's not the end of the end of the world, but IMO it *feels* right to have a pair than to scrounge for one

If you'd kan at 23:00 east propably wouldnt have tsumoed also since you had an 8 youd propably had discard the 2 of characters. 99%of times not to kan would have been the right play. This one time it could have you win the round. Unlucky, but you cant know thats gona happen before it happens.
