I am a fan of vinegar and baking soda as cleaners. I am jus a bit concerned that you had gloves you used on your countertop next to towel you used to clean the mirror. And toilet paper to stick under rim is excellent idea but using a roll already in use while gloves are touching it and seemingly placed back is a little unnerving ☺. Maybe you can have separate rolls for tp section.

A note of caution about using anything acidic inside the tank. We used bleach tablets for the tank in our new home we had built and the tank started leaking into the bowl after a while (we lived there less than five years so it was maybe three years). Turns out, anything acidic like vinegar, bleach tablets, etc. pits or eats into the rubber ring that sits in between the bottom of the tank and the stopper and prevents a tight seal. We had to install a new seal. Anything acidic will eat or pit anything made of rubber. Otherwise, I like your cleaning tips!

The vinegar is great, but I find if you mix it with Dawn soap it sticks to the sides of the bowl better. You can do a mix of 50/50 or more vinegar with less Dawn. The thicker the mixture the more it sticks to the sides. I have also just poured a gallon of cleaning vinegar in the top tank when I don't have time to spritz. Also if you use a plunger to get all of the water out of the bowl, you can then clean your toilet brush right in the toilet with the Dawn / vinegar mix instead of your sink (ugh!). When you add fresh water to your toilet you can then rinse that toilet brush out in the fresh water.

You might also consider, as a preventative maintenance step (once or twice a year) pouring about a cup of vinegar into the the center pipe of the flush valve (where the little hose from the filler valve sits), to help clean/clear the water pathway to the underside of the rim. Limescale/rust buildup in this area can cause problems with the flushing of the toilet, and keeping the pathway clean will help reduce streaks.

WARNING! If you live in a rural area and have a septic tank, be sure to neutralize the water in the tank/bowl BEFORE flushing. The reason vinegar works is due to its acidity, and that acid will eat away the walls of your septic tank over time and can actually cause the septic tank to leak or even collapse. You can neutralize the acidity by adding baking soda until the added baking soda stops foaming -- then it is safe to flush.

I found pouring vinegar down the overflow pipe gives a nice clean feel to a toilet. The water when flushing or if goes down the overflow pipe, goes around the rim, then down a chamber in the front to the eductor jet at the bottom (the hole shooting toward the drain). The vinegar gets at the rim jet holes from the inside and will loosen any mineral build up as well.

I do this but refill the tank (reservoir) with hot water & lots of vinegar (it is cheap) - this saves on scrubbing the inside for too long. Also, you can clean your toilet brush by putting it in the tank OR pushing it down into the toilet with a hot solution in there instead of in the sink. Great to see you are so excited by being this clean!

Thank you for the helpful tips. I’ve seen the “cleaning vinegar” in the stores. I am glad to know regular distilled vinegar can be used also. I’ve been using a 50/50 mixture ( warm the vinegar) and dawn dishwasher liquid to clean the glass in my shower. Works a charm. Super clean and no more soap scum on glass doors. Having the distilled white vinegar at home, able to use in salad dressings too. ( multiple uses ) Keep up the great suggestions. Thank you for posting this. Now I’ve got some work to do! 🚽🛁😀

Also I keep an x-large to go cup and put the shower head in it Once a Month- fill with hottest water and a splash of Dist Vinegar, magical no scrubbing needed.

I might add, being a retired plumber, when debris is loose in the bottom of the tank, I use a shop vac to suck up material that is loose so it doesn't flush into the toilet bowl, which has small directional holes in the hollow rim that washes the sides of the bowl when flushed and they can get plugged with minerals and loose particles from the tank if not removed............The inside of your tank looks great :-)--

I’m 70 and have been using vinegar to clean everything for years. (Learned from my grandmother.) I just subscribed to your channel because I had never mastered using vinegar to deep clean the toilet. This is awesome. I learned I need to deep clean the tank with vinegar; I learned I wasn’t using enough vinegar to deep clean the toilet; and I learned I wasn’t letting it sit long enough. Thank you. My favorite vinegar tip is using distilled white vinegar in the laundry rinse cycle instead of softener. It gets out a lot of built up soap and returns cloth to a state closer to its original state. Since we use mostly 100% cotton, this works well for us. This is the tip most interesting to friends and family who don’t like heavy perfume smells from laundry chemicals or who like replacing their expensive rinse aids with something as cheap as vinegar. Thanks again.

I didn’t know there was such a thing as “cleaning vinegar” and will have to find some. As for the brush, just set it down in the toilet bowl to soak in the water left there after draining the toilet. A great cleaning tip an elderly lady with skin sensitivity issues taught me over 30 yrs ago is to use laundry powder to clean your bathtub and sink! The granulates of the powder (I also use a Dollar Tree sponge/scrubber) helps to easily remove all of the gunk build up and get everything sparkling clean! For my mirrors, I use only *Viva* Paper towel's & water because their (woven) paper towels are washable and reusable! Unlike ordinary Bounty and others that fall apart when wet, Viva doesn't. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Viva! They are made like those mechanic paper towels that hold up to all kinds of grease and grime. You can pour whatever you are using for a cleaning agent down the over flow tube if the tank is full and or down thru the flapper if the water is off and the tank is flushed. Pour enough in so that the fluid comes out of the transfer ports under the rim to help clean the internal passages.

I coat those screws with petroleum jelly to stop them corroding, making it easier to unscrew the seat if it needs replacing, so those screws would never get washed, you can always disinfect them before touching them when unscrewing, otherwise it is a hacksaw job to get them undone. Unless they are plasic screws, then you could do what you say.

Great techniques for cleaning that toilet! Let me add that after turning off the water and flushing the toilet tank if you plunge the bowl you can get rid of a lot of the water in the bowl. It might help when cleaning the bowl as you can get to more of the bowl surface directly. Then again you might want that extra water handy for scrubbing around in the bowl. It’s a call probably based on the dirtiness of the bowl and rim.

For glass, mirrors with no streaks: no matter what your preference of cleaners, liquid or foam, and cleaning cloths or paper towels (use one to clean and another to dry); apply cleaner to part of your surface (don't let solution dry and do not clean windows in the sun) with first cloth clean surface in horizontal or vertical motion, then dry the opposite direction. My preferred cloths for glass surfaces are old sheets or towels. Microfiber works well too. Especially on appliances and automobiles. When time to launder, do not add fabric softeners. If the cleaning cloths get extremely soiled; rinse well and soak in cleaning vinegar to neutralize any soaps and dissolves oils. This also works well on mops. Love your cleaning hacks and cleaning solution recommendations. I'm with you on natural products. Vinegar is a must for cleaning caddies.
