"Putin who controls the media, who controls the messaging inside Russia, how on earth do you control the messaging when you've actually ended up vacating one region... imagine the message that sends to the people of Russia."
Military analyst Sean Bell discusses Ukraine's incursion in Kursk, which he suggests could last for a month.

There's always a difference between troop defending their homes vs troop going abroad on an invasion. ukraine 1:1 would mop the floor with russia. russia has only made gains through trench warfare by throwing troops at the grinder. It's just unfortunate that the numbers are so lopsided because the invaders are like the zerg. but ukranians have better training, hierarchy/structure and logistics. And are actually fighting for a just cause.

One of Russia's motivations to start this war was to make its borders more defensible by making the Dniepro river as its new borders. Ukraine's Special Military Operation in Kursk Oblast drives home that such a long border of Russia's is very difficult for Russia to defend. There is, though, a tried-and-true way of so-called "defending" a very long border. That's to have a very friendly and cooperative neighbor on the other side of the long border.

Russia will need to get used to the fact that Ukraine WILL join the EU and eventually NATO. Why? Ask the Swedes and the Fins, 2 long standing neutral countries? Russia CANNOT be trusted. If Putin wants to actually fight NATO, then he should try. Their weapons are more advanced than the obsolete stuff they've sent to Ukraine. NATO doesn't need to start a fight with Russia, the question you need to ask yourself is can Russia defeat a combined 32 countries in a war? This analyst overestimates Russia's ability to co ordinate both their troops and their logistics. We have ample evidence of their poor command structure and their communication. Russia's top down command is at times a strength but at times like this a major weakness. Russian troops are more beleaguered than the public is aware of. Young conscripts best option is to surrender. Tbey are young men untrained and not battke hardened and they come from Moscow and St Petersburg. Russia spent a few billion rubles building 2 defensive line in that region, along the border. It was poorly defended, and not mined because this is the Russian territory. So the Ukrainians played this perfectly: the advance was fast (no mines), the defenses were manned by a bunch of Igor Conscriptovich, and now the two defense lines are occupied by Ukrainians looking East, not what the Russians had in mind. The Russian geniuses now have to storm their own defense lines turned against themselves. There are rumors that the Ukrainian army is digging more trenches, meaning they intend to stay. Brilliant.

Let's not make the mistake of thinking that this was done on a whim with no strategic forethought. Ukraine has zero interest in the long-term seizure or occupation of Russian territory. This is a strategic move aimed at breaking the status quo and creating a serious headache for The Kremlin. From that standpoint, it seems to be working.

The Russians right now are not good at fighting a war of maneuver. That's why they settled down for the trench fighting they're trying to wear out the ukrainians with a war of attrition, because they have more cannon fodder and artillery than the ukrainians. Ukrainians seem to be more adept at maneuver warfare and their best situation is to gobble up as much land then try to push for a negotiation where they can get their land back in exchange for the Russian land. The longer this war lasts the worse it will be for Ukraine.

@petersinclair3997
@petersinclair3997 28 күн бұрын
Digging-in is risky, given Russia’s larger numbers of ground forces and its willingness to sacrifice troops in attrition operations. Creating domestic discontent in Russia, especially in Moscow and St Petersburg, might prove more effective in threatening Putin’s leadership? Hitting non-civilian targets and promoting fifth-columnists to nurture insurrection? The October 1917 Revolution, really started a few months earlier in St Petersburg, when Nicholas II was away trying to direct a loosing ground campaign and Alexandria was managing affairs in St Petersburg: The military turned against the police trying to control a crowd riot. Ukraine creating hotspots across Russia’s regIonal oblasts would be unsustainable.

It's more strategic than it may seem. The Russian offensive along the east was already culminating; rain is coming. They were getting ready to stop advancing and consolidate what they've gained. Ukraine is going to make them keep on fighting without pausing and without being able to resupply for next spring. Furthermore this is such a weak front Ukraine could advance and secure a good amount of territory with small losses, as opposed to trying to regain difficult territory well defended by Russian paid volunteers. Furthermore, this forces Russia to employ conscripts to fight. They're not experienced troops. But the main thing, I think, was to force Russia to keep fighting when they planned to stop and consolidate.

Without vast Lend Lease from the US and considerable logistical support from the UK and others, Russia would have been quickly defeated by Germany. Don’t be fooled by the movies, Russia lost tens of millions of soldiers and only just scraped through despite vast support in materials. This time, Russia can no longer afford to lose so many people (as it was the “Soviet army in WW2”, this time it’s just Russia and it’s a very different country). Russia has gone through a ton of its best equipment, has a much more limited supply of willing personnel than it advertises, and if Ukraine decides to whack the gas terminal (or shut it down), the river of EU money Putin’s regime still receives will dry up overnight. Although that would create challenges and animosity in some EU countries. I suspect Putin is staying well away from open windows and not drinking cups of tea right now!

Time in Russia depends upon how long it takes the Kremlin to get units over there to push on the Ukraine brigades.
