Support Ukraine: u24.gov.ua/ Join the TimeGhost Army and our continued effort to enable understanding of our present by explaining its historical context. bit.ly/ICU_02_PI As we cover Ukrainian history, many of its darkest moments are once again in headlines. Babi Yar, the site where over 30,000 Jews were murdered in 1941, was once again the backdrop to violence as the Russian Armed Forces struck a television transmitter in that area. This series is here to put the present bloodshed in Ukraine into its historical context, and few things are more tragically fitting to that goal than this attack. To add some context, first of all, execution in Babyn Yar continued throughout German occupation, with Roma, and members of both communist and Ukrainian nationalist resistance being killed. And, after the war, Soviets tried to hide the existence of the site, by building houses and infrastructure there, a lot of the time, basically on top of bodies

There's a book called Bloodlands that should be required reading in school. It covers this massacre as well all the other events in Ukraine and Poland between 1933-45 and puts things in perspective. Reading/hearing about this nightmare world makes you appreciate what you have and decide that the time and place where you live isn't such a bad place after all. Thank you for your tireless work educating people about the atrocities mankind has wrought upon one another. This video has surfaced emotions I haven't felt since reading This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen. It is a disgrace, the denialism of the existence or intensity of the acts we have committed against one another, which aims to wear down our natural aversion to these acts. I fear what the future holds for us, we are not so different from those who just generations ago committed horrific acts of inhumanity. Today massacres and ethnic oppression occur around the world, from the Hutus and Tutsis, Srebrenica, and apartheid South Africa of the latter part of the last century to Daesh, the ongoing atrocity in Yemen, the war in Tigray and Ethiopia and too many more to list in the 21st century. May we find peace.

I live in a village with 50.000 people and the mere thought of 2/3 of the amount of people that live here getting shot over a matter of days is incomprehensible. Putin desecrating the memory of this abomination, as Stalin desecrated the Ukrainian people in 1932, is telling for the sociapathic world view he has. This needs to end now.

It's part of the job - but these videos are especially taxing as we deal with professionals paid by the FSB - and no that's not paranoia, that's a well documented fact. It's disheartening because we have to remove them, and we live with the constant stone in our stomachs that we are also removing people just asking legitimate questions, or expressing ill informed opinions. We are democratic citizens, and while our forum is our forum, we do want discussion, debate, and questions asked - the FSB is destroying that possibility.

A little issue I have with the numbers mentioned in the beginning of the material is that the Ukrainians seem to prefer to commemorate this minority who collaborated rather than the majority that fought the Germans. Ватутин's streets are being renamed (like in Użhorod), while Bandera or Шухевич are getting their steets and monuments. So, yes, of course, plenty of the Ukrainians opposed the Germans; I am just not sure if that many of them identify with those who opposed. Also, I believe many of them were sort of forced to take part in the war on the Soviet side. Through conscription, evacuations etc. The same way their ancestors were forced to take part in the wars fought by the Russian Empire, by the Habsburgs, by Poland.

The book "Babi Yar" by A. Anatoly (A pseudonym for the author as it was illegally smuggled out of Soviet Russia and published in full in the west) gives a vivid picture of both the Nazi Occupation, the Crimes at Babi Yar (Crimes by the Germans AND later by the Soviets and the post war consequences of both.) Once the author escaped the USSR, he had the book reformatted. Ordinary print indicated the original, censored Soviet edition, BOLD print was all the excision made and Italis were notes added with new information. Try to find that edition. Almost half the book is in bold type. (Often the deletion of the bold words in sentences changes the meaning 180 degrees & some chapters are entirely in bold type.) The author was a young child of about 10 or 11 in 1941 and a witness to much of the horror.ù

Hi TimeGhost team. I am a little bit split about this episode. On one hand, the current events at Babyn Yar must not be overlooked and, in order to properly draw attention to them, people need to understand why that place is so significant. On the other, the way it was done here puts the viewer in such an emotional state that any rational evaluation becomes nearly impossible. The invasion of Ukraine is unjust. The victims of the Babyn Yar massacre deserve to be allowed to rest in peace. Yet a video like this one, which will maximize the emotional response to the point that some of the commentators have stated that they feel like the victims are being murdered all over again, when (as you said yourself at the beginning) the memorial itself was neither the intended target nor was it damaged in the attack, is verging on being a propaganda piece. Calling Putin's aggression what it is and aiding Ukraine in any way we can is one thing. Whipping ourselves into a frenzy of rage is not. Yesterday I heard eyewitness accounts of shops in Prague putting up signs "Russians not welcome". The fact that not nearly all Russians support what is going on aside, it is a symptom of the "us and them" way of thinking against which your videos have been warning us over and over again. In times like these, we need to make a conscious effort to not fall into it, as the events that are unfolding are objectively bad and angering enough, without adding any additional emotional stimuli on top. Having said all that, I would like to finish on a different note. I haven't done that nearly enough times in the past, so I wish to take the opportunity to thank you for all of your hard work and all of the excellent content that you are producing. Astrid, Anna, Sparty, Indy and all of you (mostly) behind the scenes people, you have created an incredible body of work and it is greatly appreciated.

Thankyou for the background again of this evil massacre. For me the anti Jewish hate talk coming from Russia (and some of my Russian friends) is the reality of 1930's Germany in 2022 Russia. If you shout something often enough, even if it is a lie, some of it will sadly stick. My heart goes out to those in the Ukraine, both the Ukrainians who are hopelessly outnumbered as well as those poor Russian kids who didn't even know where there were going and being drafted to die to satisfy Putin's grasp on power. Both sides are sadly fighting Nato's war because Nato is too scared to do what it was created for - there was strength in having the deterrent in place during the cold war - where exactly has that gone?

NATO wasn’t created to defend nations that are not members of the alliance. It is true that they have on occasion exceeded their stated mission. However, attacking Russia now would in fact be against their own charter, due to the close proximity of the conflict to actual NATO members. AFAIK, Ukraine hasn’t asked to be in NATO over the past 10 years, nor has it asked to join in the last week. It’s Finland and Sweden that are asking right now. And who could blame them?

Watching this reminds me of my own luck. Both sets of my paternal great grandparents emigrated from the Pale of Settlement, the Jewish area of what is now Ukraine. My late father was the youngest of his siblings, born in 1937 in NYC. If my great grandparents hadn't left when they did, there's a decent chance I would have never been born. Considering that Ukraine is led by a Jew, a child of survivors, the accusations of a neo-Nazi Ukranian government only make sense as the Russian government trying to whip up support for their invasion as the accusations fall apart when examined. Attacks desecrating part of a site memorializing those killed by Nazis wouldn't necessarily upset neo-Nazis, adding more tools to use to counter misinformation. I apologize if this is rambling and/or disjointed. It is hard to express how I feel hearing about this recent attack. May aid and strength be given to those in both Ukraine and Russia, as well as elsewhere, who condemn this invasion and shine a light on the lies behind it.

no need to apologize whatsoever. your emotional state is quite understandable. & it is normal to wonder, 'what if'. had your ancestors not emmigrated, it is very likely you would have never existed. but God intended for you to exist. so it was He, who urged your Great Grandparents to depart the Pale of Settlement. so, Glory be to God.

Putin wants the old Soviet Union back. Russias GDP is embarrassing for its size. He knows Ukraine and the Baltic states are heavy with resources. Just like Hitler with Czechloslovakia I think the west are naive if they think Putin stops with Ukraine.

As an American Pole I beg of you please discuss the past relationship between Russia Poland and Ukraine and how it has changed. I am proud of the Polish people and how they are showing their kindness and humanity to Ukraine although at one time they were enemies. Please let it be a lesson to the rest of the world that one time you may have been enemies but that is not this time now. You have found common ground. It's called humanity
