“They do send a message to Russians that there is a resistance to Putin within Russia itself.”
Partisan militia forces inside Russia could force Russian troops to leave Ukraine in order to protect their own borders, explains Jamie Shea, former Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Emerging Security Challenges at NATO.

In English the term would be 'dilemma', a choice between two or more equally negative options Vs a 'problem' which had one clear 'best' solution. NATO doctrine is based in no small part on this idea, so makes sense Ukraine adopt it. Given how Russia has a long history of excelling at chess it surprises me they are not able to transfer those concepts to their military.

@@notmyname3681 Russians also have a long history of engaging in catastrophic wars. The Crimean War, The Russo-Japanese War, WWI, Afghanistan. Both the war with Napoleon and WWII were won by General Winter as much as anything else. In war, Russia is less like a chess player and more like a stampeding herd which can go over a cliff. I would say that chess comes in when we think of how many times Russia has been able to convince its enemies for a time that it was a top military power rather than a haphazard one. You may, of course, disagree, but I think you can see my point.

@@davidshoup3856 Not entirely sure what point you are trying to make. If it's that Soviets were able to use deception to fight the Germans, you are missing the point. The doctrine of creating dilemmas is not simply about deception, and not simply strategic. It extends down to the divisional level, indeed even the level of smaller units. Examples of what the Soviets succeeded in eighty years ago are also not particularly, if at all, relevant to the modern Russian military. If anything it has been their faults and failures which have outlasted the fall of the political Soviet regime.

I wouldn't hold your breath. Things are very stable and prosperous in Russia these days. After many years of struggle. The economy is doing well, the ruble is stable, stores are full of goods of all types, including virtually all western brands, and income tax is only 13 percent. They have a democratic govt, all mayors and governors are elected, presidents too, and plenty of freedom. Putin's approval ratings remain very high, in fact the highest of any leader in the world. More than double Joe Biden's. There isn't going to be any revolution or uprising.
@davidshoup3856

Putin has had 80%+ approval ratings by western polls the entire time Now especially after attacks on Moscow he's actually under public pressure to drop the hammer on Ukraine. (the myth of that country who's people that didn't defend their country when it was being threatened and attacked. That's never happened and is not going to be Russia.).The next decision US/NATO expanding and extending the war he is being forced to make is putting Russia on a full war footing (the economy doing fine after the German-Russian Nord Stream pipeline attack compared to Germany's great ) mobilizing two million men and taking all of Ukraine to the Polish border. The last thing he wants to do and has said to rule over Ukrainians. The invasion being to protect abused minority ethnic Russian Ukrainians in the Donbas in the 8th year of their civil war and to keep Ukraine from joining NATO allowing NATO to expansion east to Russia's border with US nuclear missiles.

Underground resistance has always been a factor when oppressive regimes, that they themselves have personally experienced, decide to get involved - and it's nobody's fault but the oppressors 🤷‍♀️ putin has pulled a lot of his thugs and goons to attack Ukraine, and now the people have their chance in Russia, in Georgia, in Chechnya, in Belarus, in Kaliningrad, etc . You reap what you sow - and I don't think alliance with putin will hold up - seems like China and India are just taking advantage of cheap capped Russian oil prices - and China has more B&RI investment in Russia than anywhere else in the world 💯 that was a bad decision on their part, unless they are planning on taking possession of large chunks of Russia when they are weakened enough that they can't stop it..

The other way around, buddy. Ukraine wasted 5 months trying to defend Bakhmut with literally everything they had. 80% of all available Ukrainian artillery was deployed at Bakhmut, this meant that Ukraine lost the ability to make moves elsewhere on the front as they were busy, funnelling every bit of material they had into the fight. Worst yet is even with all of this, they still ended up losing the town despite constant reinforcement all the way until they had no more territory left. Bakhmut was a horrible loss for Ukraine, and it just goes to show how efficient Wagner and the Russian army are at storming fortified positions, although this was mainly thanks to their massive artillery and especially air power advantage. I disagree. It doesn't muddy the waters at all. Consider: Russia fires missiles with impunity from russian and belorusian territory that deliberately target civilian infrustructure in a campaign of destruction and terror. They have been doing that for over a year and those rockets have killed hundreds if not thousands of civilians and destroyed hospitals, shopping centres, homes etc etc etc. They train arm and prepare in Belarus and russia. And yet you expect UA to only attack military objects when they are inside UA? it has taken more than a year of russia's ruthless, barbaric invasion for UA to be involved in raiding attacks over the russian border. And even now, it is limited, strategic and it is russians with russian and UA military equipment. the result is dilemmas for russia. It also has a military strategy and a direct impact on the war on the ground in UA. They don't want drones flying to moscow? they need to reallocate air defences away from their invasion of UA to prevent UA drones from getting to moscow. They want to protect their borders? Why do you think that until now the roads to and from UA have not been mined? How about because that left the russians with a future option for future invasion towards Kyiv Kharkiv etc. Now they are blowing up roads and bridges to prevent russian militia from entering russia - It's a great win because it also makes it more difficult for the russians themselves to use those roads. And it creates the dilemma - do they divert troops to secure the russian border, or do they leave them in UA. Why on earth would people expect UA not to do its best to win the war? and to fight with one hand tied behind their back? What - they have to wait for missiles to be launched and cross over into UA air before they can disable them? They can't target those bomber planes that launch everything safely from across the border? They can't target equipment and troops that are being gathered to be sent to UA?As far as I am concerned there is no muddying of the water. russia has had over a year of goodwill and allowances. They are just getting worse over time - and the longer this is allowed to continue the worse they will get. The way they are indoctrinating school children is insane. We want UA to win? Then let them win - and give them the tools to do it. They are bending over backwards to be as human as they can be in the absolute worst of situations and commentators are moaning about muddying the waters? Just No. That's some BS

No. They can and will increase their rate of killing, maiming and making Ukrainian civilians homeless and destroying their houses schools and hospitals etc that's what the do and their capacity to do that has certainly not peaked.

If you want to call it a peak. Sure. I think that part of russia peaked in the 15th, 16th, & 17th century wars of expansion. Of the new russia, they got their butts kick in '94-'96 by a country they almost completely surrounded, had no foreign aide, and was much smaller & more poor than Ukraine. So where are you seeing a 'peak'.

@@hardtackbeans9790 I’m asking (obviously) about the war Russia started with Ukraine. Over the centuries any country has peaks and troughs. It seems though that this time, that Russia’s ability to continue its war is reducing?

@@seanlander9321 They keep rolling out older & older equipment. A determined foe could keep fighting down to sticks & stones. I think even little putin isn't that determined. He hasn't spoken publically for several days. Which is a BIG sign of weakness for a russian leader. I would say the battle capability for russia has definitely peaked. Given a couple of years they could reconstitute. Which I doubt they will get.

Attacks in Russia do not muddy the waters about who the brutal murderous genocidal invader is, get very clear in your mind, Russia is the "baddy" no matter what Ukraine does in retaliation. Such foolish vocabulary for something as serious as war shows complete detachment from the topic

No Ukranian special military operations in Russia would change the reality that the former is in an existential struggle against a larger, unprovoked invader who is criminally unrestrained -- Let's not misunderstand that fact from the comfort of our armchairs. Offence is a legitimate aspect of defence for a people who have suffered unimaginable hardships as some call for one side to fight forever with one arm tied behind it's back. If one day Ukraine needed to conduct special military operations over the boarder, they should have our blessing in limited endeavours. 2:48

Those nations who refuse to condemn Russian aggression on another sovereign nation. Should have any funding given to them by the western nations who want peace with borders as they are. Must remove everything of wealth from them in foreign aid etc, until they come to their senses? Is that a right call or not, especially by those not condemning Russia in any way at all?
