“Russia is running out of troops and they need more men to throw into battle.”
Bill Browder tells Cathy Newman on #TimesRadio he “would not discount” the Kremlin’s involvement in organising the terror attack that saw gunmen fire at and kill over 100 civilians in Moscow, in an attempt to recruit troops to send to Ukraine.

@@bonnie7898 Was it? I guess sanctions could qualify as a "trade relationship". Seriously though mate, taking part in all those meetings that ultimately decided nothing means very little. There have been tons of meetings with Merkel and Hollande about Minsk-2, for example, and so what? They have later come out saying it was all a ruse and Ukraine was never going to comply, they just wanted to give it time. You see my point? Appearances are deceptive. The one important diplomatic effort, the one that could have prevented the war was in late 2021 - when Russia proposed to have negotiations about security arrangements in Europe. That would have mattered. But Russia was told to go take a hike. "We have open doors policy", right (spoiler: there is no such policy in NATO's chart).

@@libertarianbydefaultI think you have that bass awkward. Russia was never going to comply with minsk. Russia never honors its treaties under putin. That security arrangement was a ruse that Putin never would have honored except for as long as he needed to build up his military. Putin has a long track record of not honoring treaties. He even speaks publicly about his disdain for them. You can't be a libertarian if you follow that demagogue Trump when he said he would think it would be OK to suspend the constitution because his ego can't handle the fact that he Lost the election. Wake up dude he is a fraud and a phony. I voted for him twice but never ever again! He's a narcissistic disaster waiting to happen. Really? Look at the financial pain ordinary, hard-working folk already endure to heat their homes and refuel their cars. Transportation costs have risen exponentially, further driving (no pun intended) down living standards across the West. Ukraine will not win against Russia, even with the underhanded backing of America/Israel and the West/Israel.

BRICS + ... DEDOLARIZATION... SWIFT ALTERNATIVE... The clock is ticking alright. Not for Russia though. "The Russian economy is showing remarkable resilience, despite Western sanctions. In its latest economic outlook, published on January 30, the International Monetary Fund raised its growth forecast for Russia to 2.6% in 2024, more than double the 1.1% figure published in October 2023." Here's why I'd tend to believe this: human wave tactics are *really* expensive in the *one* category that no state can take lightly: laborers/human lives... that and the ways they wage war is very costly in terms of manpower. So it stands to reason that he'd be desperate, plus his state doesn't have good logistics, and that quality is absolutely *vital* to having, fielding, moving, supplying, and assembling a large army. Now it *has* been done by his country in the past, but it impedes its ability to do that if the logistics are bad; and that means that they're going to have a lot of trouble using the army that they would need; so it stands to reason he's trying to compensate for lack of manpower by "terrorist tactics", plus it fits his doctrines for occupied areas!

I rarely disagree with Bill Browder, for whom I have enormous respect. But he's wrong about negotiating for the release of hostages and about banning travel to Russia. All history shows that negotiating with hostage takers only means that more hostages are taken in the future. We must balance the obvious harm to Gerschkovich and the others against the benefit to all the future potential hostages who don't end up that way. Banning travel, especially of journalists, to russia would be hugely counter-productive. Never mind the Russians - we in the West need to know what's going on there.
