In the US, we have a lot of people from Central and South America. Just because there are people here from Mexico, does not mean we’re giving our US territory to Mexico, or Columbia, or anywhere else. If someone wants to be in those countries, they can move there. Likewise, if there are people in Ukraine who want to be in Russia - they can move there themselves. No one is stopping them. But Ukraine does not give their territory to Russia. Period.

The central problem with Russia is that it still thinks of itself as an empire, as the dominant power of Eurasia, and it views the growth of nationalism on its borders as an unfair infringement of its natural rights. This is, of course, very far from reality, and the Soviet Union’s lost war in Afghanistan should have been taken as a warning that the age of empires is over. In the 21st Century, peace and prosperity depend on multinational relationships which empire-building is bound to disrupt. The question to ask, surely, in respect of the possibility of Putin’s potential use of nuclear weapons (either tactical or strategic) is what would the response of China be? Putin’s one real ally…….one imagines, entirely negative. More, and more powerful weapons must be supplied to Ukraine.
@undead8902 жыл бұрын
China is an additional signatory on the Budapest Memorandum in which they promise to help Ukraine if it's attacked with Nuclear weapons. This will put China is a very bad position in which they will either have to turn on Russia, or be outcast by the wider community for failing to live up to their defense pact.

China would be furious. China really does not like instability, but to use nukes would be the last straw. The convo of central and eastern eurasian countries the other week there - the fact that they felt free to tell Putin so forthrightly that they did not accept his “referendum” or annexation as legitimate - it is a hint that they knew China was comfortable with them saying that.

I think a relatively high proportion of people leaving are not just employees but many are the sort of self-employed people who know they can find work anywhere - maintenance, IT support, engineers etc. the kind of support workers as well as innovators that things begin to grind to a halt without. Even if there are only 100k of these amongst the draft dodgers, that’s a thousand towns missing 100 of the people who keep things moving along.

You mean like he did in 2014 when they annexed Crimea and the Ukrainian soldiers were frog marched off their own land without any military resistance? @@MrSandancer Yep. That bridge gives the russians an out when they need it which means they are less likely to get into a desperate fight for survival if they get trapped on the peninsula. And let's face it, the way things are going they will be heading east pretty soon. Their most successful military tactic so far appears to be how to retreat at a rate of knots. It is probably also about time the Poland and Lithuania took back the Kaliningrad enclave and Finland reclaimed the land they've lost to the russians. Not going to be a better time to do it. I'm also waiting for China to annex Siberia so they can steal all the oil and gas. Why pay for it when you can just take it? Not like Russia has an army left to stop them.

The referendums were not to justify the use of nuclear weapons, but to allow the deployment of conscripts (to defend the new Russian territories). The rhetoric about nuclear weapons is an after thought and purely propaganda, ...their actual use is no more likely than at any time previously. Far from the West being too scared to use their nuclear weapons, it is Russia who is scared to use nukes. They know their nuclear threat is weaker than their military might has proven to be. That is why they are the ones who are making all the noise and sabre rattling - it is simply 'projection' - they wish to distract from their glaring weaknesses.

According to her, the parties will talk about reviving inspections within the framework of the countries' joint agreement Start (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty), which exists to prevent nuclear conflicts.
