The Russian armed forces have been fighting with invading Ukrainian troops in the Kursk region for the third day in a row. The situation is "stable and under control," the deputy governor of the border region said on Thursday, according to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. Around 3,000 people have been brought to safety. The Russian troops are actively fighting against Ukrainian units in the Sudzha district and are pushing them back, the Tass news agency quoted local authorities as saying. Four people were killed in the Ukrainian attacks. The Defense Ministry in Moscow announced that the Russian armed forces had prevented a Ukrainian advance in Kursk. The Ukrainian military itself has not yet commented on its offensive, which is one of the largest counterattacks on Russian territory since the start of the war. Russian aggression is the reason for every escalation, wrote Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak on the online platform X.
Several pro-Russian military bloggers also spoke of ongoing fighting in Kursk. Civilians were being evacuated to safety. "Sudzha is basically lost to us. This is an important logistics hub," wrote Yuri Podolyaka, a well-known pro-Russian military blogger of Ukrainian origin. The Ukrainian armed forces were advancing north towards Lgov. "In general, the situation is difficult and continues to deteriorate, although the pace of the Ukrainian offensive has noticeably slowed down."
LARGEST UKRAINIAN ATTACK ON RUSSIAN TERRITORY
According to Russian sources, around a thousand Ukrainian soldiers entered Kursk on Tuesday morning in one of the largest attacks on Russian territory in the war that has been going on since February 24, 2022. They crossed the state border in tanks and armored vehicles and were covered by swarms of drones and artillery fire.
Presidential advisor Podolyak blamed Russia itself for the escalation of the situation and the Ukrainian attacks in the Russian border regions such as Kursk and Belgorod, which have recently increased. "The real cause of every escalation, every artillery shelling, every military action, every forced evacuation and every destruction of normal life, even on our own territories such as the Kursk and Belgorod regions, is solely and exclusively Russia's clear aggression," Podolyak wrote on X. He did not provide any further details on the advance of the Ukrainian troops.
In Belgorod, according to the local governor Vyacheslav Gladkov, a civilian was killed during renewed shelling of the town of Shebekino. Another civilian was injured, Gladkov wrote on the Telegram short message service. Belgorod was frequently subjected to Ukrainian artillery and drone attacks during the war. Shebekino is located near the Kursk region and, according to Russian sources, has recently come under fire more frequently.
