Syria was a huge investment for Russia. They’ve been putting men, equipment, and rubles into keeping it under control of the friendly regime. It’s geostrategically important, less important in terms of giving them goods or anything. It’s also one of the few warm water ports they “own” and a gateway for Russian influence in Africa.
