A little story behind the song 'Fatwa Pujangga' (= Poet's statement) created by Said Effendi sung by Putri Ariani. This song, which was once popular in the 60s, has a story that is not widely known to the public. Once upon a time, in his heyday, Said Effendi received a lot of letters from his fans, as usual the contents of the fan letters must have contained praise and flattery. It is said that Said Effendi, the famous but humble singer always replied to letters from his fans. Among the many letters that came in, one of them expressed her heart's content, expressing her interest in the figure of the singer who is well known for the songs 'Asmara Dewi' and 'Bunga Seroja'. The contents of the letter are full of beautiful and poetic words as well as expressing her love for her idol, Said Effendi. The closing word of the letter states that the sender does not expect his love in return, it is sufficient if the letter has reached the intended hand.

Lagu tersebut adalah balasan surat cinta yang tulus dan berharap tidak dibalas dari seorang penggemar kepada Said Effendi yang telah membuat gelisah Said Effendi kemana harus membalas surat cinta tanpa alamat tersebut.. suara naik turun yang cantik... adalah cengkok melayu, kalo di dangdut cengkok dangdut.

Hey Mr. J, thanks, great reaction! Very much appreciate your open approach to different languages and cultures. As you maybe know by now I'm Bavarian, with a Bavarian father and a mother originating from east prussia which was lost during ww2, so I grew up with parents who spoke quite different dialects by nature and spoke with each other in some kind of standard German, each with their own melody and annunciation though... Later in school I learned English (quite easy for Germans as English is basically a German dialect mixed with some French and Latin...), Latin, French and Italian. Latin gave me a good basis to understand and learn other Romanic languages, so I'm also able to read and if not spoken too quickly also listen to like Spanish or Portuguese and at least getting what it's all about roughly... - and also with a musical father who loved classical music and some jazz, then starting to develop my own taste with the help of like Beatles, ACDC, Led Zeppelin, SVR, Tom Waits, Nick Cave to name some influential stations in my musical journey I've come to love listening to most different types of music and always widen my musical horizon. I discovered many great artists along the way, but the older I'm getting (born 1967) the more the quality of a voice and the ability of an artist to convey emotion have become the decisive criteria on how much I'll enjoy a musical performance, so I ended up listening mostly to Angelina Jordan, Haley Reinhart and Mon Laferte during the past three years. And now Putri entered that circle of favorites (I enjoy quite a few others as well, Lara fabian, Sohyang, Katrina Velarde, Diana Ankudinova, Gigi de Lana, Morisette...mainly female singers, Cakra Khan is an exception, I love love his voice...) - anyway, Putri definitely has come to stay, in the few weeks since I discovered her I mainly listened to her and I can tell you she never disappoints, incredible musicality and depth of soul... What's interesting: Among the "Angels" I can clearly distinguish two groups, one part insists that AJ is superior to any other artist, these are the ones who don't share our fascination with other cultures and traditions, for them AJ is perfect because musically she is rooted only in Western music, they can't see, feel and appreciate the richness and beauty that comes with great vocalists like Diana or Putri, they just don't get it - and then there's another group of Angels who have that open minded spirit and are able to embrace great talent from other regions of the world... I'm really happy you belong to the second group, because I enjoy your calm, thoughtful and not exaggerated style of reacting and commenting, and I love both AJ (and the others I mentioned, at one point I'll have to introduce you to Mon Laferte, she's gorgeous, a musical monster goddess...) and Putri, and with Putri also her covers and originals in Bahasa or other languages... Long comment short: You're my man J, next Putri reaction might be "Hanya rindu", an original song that is also in her native language, but musically, in terms of melody, chord progression, orchestration, and vocally, in the way she sings and embellishes, it doesn't sound Indonesian or Arabic at all, rather like some of the most beautiful German Lieder of the 19th century by the likes of Franz Schubert or Robert Schumann... I always wondered how in the world a 15 year old from Indonesia would invent such a song on the fly - there's a live video where she's given the story (death of his father in a hospital, regrets he didn't take him home to die...) by her interviewer and is being asked to make up and sing a song about the topic, and she came up with "Hanya rindu" immediately, later for the music video she only refined it and added more orchestration, the first draft was of course only her and her piano, but she did no major changes with the melody and lyrics after her first improvisation (which had the interviewer down in tears...) - Very impressive! I've always wondered how a teenager from a completely different culture would come up with such a melody and chord progression reminding me of classical German music, but later I learned from a recent interview she did that she listened to a lot of Beethoven and Mozart while still in her mothers womb, and I'm quite sure she still remembers every note she heard back then... Putri is a true musical wonder, and in my opinion AJ fans who are letting down on her don't even deserve to be blessed by AJ's voice, I hope they all fall deaf! Jm2c ... sorry for the rant, but I had a clash with one of these "Angels" just before who wanted to tell me how AJ was miles ahead of anybody else and Putri couldn't even get close, and that really infuriated me... these guys put such a shame on AJ, which infuriates me even more, because I love her dearly for what she is and what she is not and she does not deserve such fans who put a bad light on her... give your naughty cat a hug from me, I'm sure she didn't mean to hurt you! Fatwa Pujangga is a 70+ years old song written in the 50s when Indonesian and Malaysian languages were nearly 90% similar. This kind of old language (or as we call it; Bahasa) is still widely spoken in Malaysia whereas indonesians had abandoned this sometimes in early 80s (no thanks to pop culture e.g TV shows glorifying slangs and regional innuendos, namely Jakarta being the capital where all these TV stations and publishing companies located). So yeah, not so many Indonesian singers (moreover younger than 40-50 years age bracket) could understand the lyrics of this song, let alone singing it.

The Fatwa Pujangga (tell about the deep love from his fans) which wrote by Mr. Said Effendy if im not wrong, and popular around 1960 has not been heard for a long time, even in Indonesia. He sings in the Malay music genre which is quite different from other types of music, this type is sometimes combined with several other musical genres in Indonesia such as dandut and others, where singing this genre of music is full of vocal strains such as falsetto but here we call it cengkok

you should hear Putri recite the Al Quran, yes its in Arabic but the vocals/pronunciation with Putri's voice is incredible. It also gives an insight as to where she has developed her "runs" while singing other songs.
