Putri Ariani Sings Angelina Jordan's Arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody: My Reaction

Now that the dust has settled somewhat, I must say that the hostility displayed by some commenters was dismaying. I had to remove some comments that were beyond the pale. And you get the impression from some of them that I was attacking Putri, when actually I was very positive about her. I said that unlike Angelina Putri was a good piano player, that she made the song her own, that she had a nice voice, that she seemed like a wonderful person. I also said I needed to listen to more of her music and that my impression of her could become more positive with more listening to her and more knowledge about her. But my also saying that I preferred Angelina Jordan seemed to trump all of that for a lot of people. Also, there was anger about me offhandedly saying that Putri was using Angelina’s arrangement, as if using someone else’s arrangement were a bad thing. I would say that Angelina used Sara Bareilles’s arrangement of “Yellow Brick Road,” with minor changes, and what’s wrong with that? Now you could argue that Putri’s version was different enough from Angelina’s that it could be called a different arrangement entirely I suppose, but why the vitriol? Again, if it is the same arrangement there is nothing wrong with that, so what? For the record, it is my understanding that the arrangement of a song refers mostly to its structure rather than things like vocal style or key,, and I would say that structurally Putri’s version is almost identical to Angelina’s, with the addition of the first verse. Same a cappella beginning, same replacement of the original’s opera and rock middle section with a big belt, same part of the last verse used. But maybe I’m wrong and it’s different enough that it should be called Putri’s own arrangement. If so, fine, but it’s still the same performance either way and it should be obvious no diss of Putri was intended. I’ll just conclude by saying that clearly both of these young ladies are very talented, and I don’t think either would want their fans to be hostile towards people who gently and respectfully express a preference for the other. “Be kind to each other, and spread love.” - Angelina Jordan

On Putri's youtube channel there is another video where she sings the entire song, Bohemian Rhapsody, as well as play piano for the entire arrangement, although she appears to be about 12 or 13 years old at the time. When Freddy Mercury first proposed Bohemian Rhapsody to his album, the original title was Nothing Really Matters. He later added all the skata moosh stata moosh can you do the fandango stuff. Putri focused on Nothing Really Matters as a ballad... and so is her right of course. I dont get how the Angelina Jordan fans are so defensive about the rise in popularity of Putri. Or how she dare do Bohemian Rhapsody as if that is AJs private property. I dont think Putri was copying AJs arrangement. She might not have even known of its existence. Leave Putri alone and let her blaze her own trail. She hasnt let anyone or any circumstance stand in her way yet.

I really agree with you sir... Putri doesn't want to beat any singer, even at AGT she said that she love the atmosphere, it wasn't like a contest but more sharing each other and made friendship. And at IGT 2014 when a judge asked her if she happy to reached the semifinals, she answered that she's happy because everyone appreciated her. Ones she got discriminatian that made her feel insecure for months, fortunatelly she succesed to change the insecure to be grateful. So now we can see a stronger, a cheerfull, and multi talented girl who want share and prove what she believe that we are able, we are capable, and we are equal..

I think it is wonderful that Putri is rising on the world stage. I think it is sad that a competition of sorts is arising among fans of both or either singer. It detracts from the art that both bring us. Avid fans obviously want to see their favorite artist get the broader recognition that their work, talent and dedication deserves. But to pit them against each other is just sad. It is sad because it detracts from the primary value of music, which is to touch our souls with the beauty and emotion that great music can bring. If you want competition go watch some sporting event or the cage fight between Musk and Zuckerberg. The true artist doesn't succeed by "defeating" other artists. Even the thought of that last sentence seems absurd to me. Artists succeed by touching the minds and hearts of people with their art.

There are already several videos asking which one is better. They are both great. They both have different styles. You can like both and of you prefer one over the other it’s just a matter of personal preference of musical styles. What’s the both of asking people to select which is better? It’s all subjective. There are a lot of great young singers out there and people keep trying to compare or state that one is better than the other. Besides Angelina and Putii there is Diana, Daneliya, Lucy Thomas, Angelica Hale, among others. Putting them against one another is not fair.

A nice reaction Chris! I think a number of Putri fans are going to take a bit of offense by the title of your video, saying that she is singing Angelina's arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody. They may disagree because she, like Angelina, did this arrangement, even though they are pretty close to one another. Like you said in the beginning, she does have an extra line in her version than in Angelina's version. I personally like both versions. Also, timing and exposure is also an issue in regards to the popularity of their versions of their songs. Angelina, introduced her personal arrangement of the song on AGT The Champions 2020 and it shocked the audience and judges. She got a standing ovation and the Golden Buzzer from Heidi Klum. This performance became viral and got millions of views. Putri's audition, she sang her original song, wowed the judges and the audience, Simon then got up from his chair and approached Putri on stage and asked her to sing another song. She sang Elton John’s Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word, captivating the crowd and judges once again. She got the Golden Buzzer from Simon, and, her audition performance has gone viral and getting millions of views. Now, people are looking for more Putri songs and are reacting to her songs like her cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. It's amazing how both are pretty similar with their achievements and in music. Both are teens. Both have won Got Talent shows at the age of 8. Both have helped raise awareness and money for different charities. Both write their own songs and do their own arrangements. Both play multiple instruments. Both can cover different genres of music. Both can speak different languages. Lastly, both are extremely talented, which goes without saying. I think some people don’t necessarily understand what is meant by arrangements. It’s not necessarily the vocal style or tone. It’s more the structure of the song. In Angelina’s arrangement she started with “any way the wind blows….” A big departure from the Queen version. After the verse, she goes into a belt followed by “oh baby. Can’t do this to me baby” followed by “Norhing really matters….” Then closes this song out. This arrangement of the song is why Queen gave her the copyright because of the unique structure of the song. Putti’s version here is basically Angelina’s arrangement except that she added back the first.verse. But the restructuring of the song is based on what Angelina did. Now they both have different styles and vocal tones so the performances are different but that has more to do with their singing voice, not the song arrangement . I have found many other videos on KZbin of artists covering Angelina’s arrangement and it even says that in the video title. Another example is Unchained Melody. There are so many recordings of that song but most people cover the Righteous Bros arrangement. Even Angelina’s cover of that song is based on the Righteous Bros arrangement.

I wish Putri a lot of success. Putri is already 10 times bigger than Angelina on Spotify with 3.5 million monthly listeners, while Angelina has about 350K monthly listeners. That said, I prefer Angelina's voice all day long. She is better for me personally. And the difference is miles apart for me. Sorry, but Putri doesn't give me anything. It's a topic that has already been addressed/discussed, and I still think the same, we do no favors to any young singer by comparing her to AJ, her talent is beyond any qualification ,her vocal range is incomparable, she has a whole orchestra in her vocal cords. Would we compare Aretha with Donna, with Whitney? It's sure not. Let everyone listen to whoever they like, let them praise whatever they see fit, let's focus on the music that gladdens our souls, without comparisons. Putri is a young woman with a delightful character that makes you fall in love, she has a beautiful voice and it's evident her musical talent accompanying herself on a keyboard despite her disability, but comparisons are odious, and in this case absurd, there is no comparison possible (IMHO).

I respectfully disagree with your analysis that this is a cover of Angelina Jordan's arrangement. There are many slower versions of Bohemian Rhapsody that have been done, and while there are similarities to Ms Jordan's cover, Ms Ariani's cover is very much her own interpretation and arrangement and unique and wonderful in its own right. I admire both of these young women but it is impossible to compare them since they are so very different in their voices and interpretation of the music. They are both a joy to listen to. Ms Ariani has more vocal range and versatility and a special way of making a song go right to the heart and Ms Jordan has a uniqueness to her voice that is so very individual to her. They are both simply phenomenal and we are so lucky to be able to sit and enjoy them and what they have to offer us.

It's strange that i see Putri fans talking about competition, defending, who is better! I see them saying that Angelinas fans are being negative and aggresive toward Putri!. I personally dislike comparison videos myself but i don't think Chris was doing that as such as he gave Putri a lot of credit and praise. Top artists have their own talents & niche in the musics industry. My fair opinion is as follows;- 1) Angelina Jordan has got the talent & personelity of an entertainer/ perfor mer. She should develop her stage dancers in an artistic style with her songs & musics..She can do this whereas Putri can' t. Hi Chris. I think you were trying to be diplomatic and not to offend the large population of mostly south Asian people who rightfully support Putri. We should all support her as an upcoming artist who has overcome huge challenges to learn her craft so well. However, the moment we begin to decide who’s better, things begin to unravel. We have seen what has happened in Alan’s podcast and negativity is still being thrown around by so many in the comments. Like you, there’s only one artist who can bring me to my knees when she sings. I tend to really push back on the tendency of these talent shows to focus on a back story/hardship rather than the pure assessment of TALENT. Her being blind, Muslim Indonesian, etc., doesn't hold any currency to me- that is a bastardization of what talent really means. I will also say that their works of charity means very little to me as well. You cannot pay 'indulgences' by works of charity to get more talent or fame.

Look at some of the vocal stars from the past- Char Church, Jackie Evancho. Hayley Westenra, Katherine Jenkins, etc.- they all came from normal well balanced families and backgrounds-their vocals did the talking for them. They did not need charity emotion. I think having a preference for one singer is alright. The problem is you used the timing when Putri went viral on the Internet with over 40 M in a few weeks to go with your good knowledge about Angelina but none about Putri. There, you had failed to be objective even if you had tried. Otherwise, you wouldn't have highly praised Angelina when you actually reacted to Putri's rendition. I watched some reactors who covered both of the singers. Yet, they didn't go with such a title or try to compare these talented artists at all. They complimented both for who they are and their talents. If you only react to Angelina's works, nothing wrong at all if you worship her. You did many reactions for Angelina, although the viewers weren't as many as you have now when you put Putri on. Why has she gone viral? I think there are several aspects that create these frenzines. Apart from Putri's personality and singing skills, she got a golden buzzer from Simon Cowell. For those who watch AGT, they know that Simon's golden buzzers are different. Not only that did he do, but he went on the stage asking for a second song. He usually asks a second song if a participant can't do his or her best with the first song. So, again, your timing and fondness for Angelina have turned out to be like this. Keep making reaction videos for Angelina in particular, just refrain from comparison. For sure, Angelina has done replicas of other artists like her Tic Tok of “Fields of Gold” in the arrangement of Eva Cassidy. It’s close enough to overlay, yet distinctly different. Angelina adds unique depth which can’t be replicated, setting her performances apart. I was amazed that you would even tackle this beast, knowing full well it would come back and bite you. You knew going in that both were exceptional singers, but Angelina can see and Putri cannot. The world doesn't exist that those two factors don't come into play...which is a sad state of affairs when you're measuring singing talent. I have listened to several songs by Putri. While they were nice and she is certainly talented they did not move me. I listen to music to feel a certain emotion.When I listen to Angelina I go to another world as she describes she does. When I listen to Putri I have no desire to listen to her song again. When I hear Angelina I want to listen to her songs over and over to feel that emotion. I have shared Angelina with others that do not share that same response as myself. Music is very individualized. As Angelina said be kind and spread love. Listen to the artists that you love and let others listen to who they love. We don't need to compare. My favorite flower is a Calla Lily. Yours may be a rose. They are both beautiful flowers but only one is my favorite.

I've been following Angelina closely ever since I discovered her three years ago, most of my music listening time in these recent years went to her recordings and reactions to them. But since I discovered Putri some weeks ago this has changed, now 90% of my views go to Putri... Kudos to you for your courage honoring Putri Ariani. Like an earlier comment, just the mention of Angelina can cause some to think its a comparison. Like Twitter often is, KZbin can be a cesspool of allegiance bordering on tribalism. If you go to a Taylor Swift channel and suggest that she is not the best singer, (she's not), you would be pilloried unmercifully in the replies. The mere mention of another artist on those channels is enough to set some fans off, and a small number of even Angelina's fans are no different. My only caution is your insistence that there are objective criteria for analyzing artistry. Indeed, operatic vocal coaches/professionals can evaluate these characteristics in a performance. That said, I doubt operatic coaches would be good for pop singers. In either case, I don't believe that you have the credentials for making these determinations.
