Garfield's big feet were a suggestion from Charles Schultz creator of Peanuts. Apparently Jim Davis was having a terrible time making Garfield look right while standing up right on little cat feet. When he raised the question to Charles Schultz, Schultz doodled giant plantigrade feet* on Garfield. It made Garfield look right standing up so Jim kept it. *Schultz did the same thing to Snoopy. You may notice that Snoopy also has ridiculously large plantigrade feet.

There's precedent for the lobotomy thing; there was a collection of horror-ish stories called Garfield's Scary Tales, and one of them (Terminal Terror) involved Jon being hypnotized by his new computer to bring Garfield to it so it could drain his brain. It gets Odie instead with predictable results.
