This channel has some of the best content for people interested in getting into live aboard boating, I just wish they had time to make more videos.

Being as how your nautical life has been.....I love the tropical song "Send Me A Letter", but I don't know the artist or group that did it.it's sung buy solo male with xylophone or whatever that instrument was in the background. I miss listening to that song & if he did more songs. If you could find out ,I'd appreciate it greatly !!!! What is your dock neighbor Bob's boat model & length? I absolutely love your boat & your very knowledgeable info.!!! Keep vids coming....please make them all full screen. I very much thank you for any above info you could inform me on. Stay safe!!!!

TFS We never get enough reminders just how bad a fire on board a boat can be. Happy sailing.

This is perfect timing, considering our scare out here in the mooring field. We both learned a lot and will be looking to step up our fire game on board. Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Probably the most informative/beneficial video for cruisers I’ve seen to date. Still can’t get over all the space in your engine room. You’re gonna laugh (or cry) when you see how tight ours is. Catch you guys later! Will

Hey Will! Super happy that we were able to provide you with applicable info! That's what I was hoping for. It's easy to overlook or become complacent with fire suppression systems on board if you have never had to experience a live situation. I really appreciate the feedback and support. Haha oh yeah I have heard how spacious and easy to work in Sea Ray ER's are. ;) Hope to see you soon! Butch

Glen did a good job. Glen I think it’s important to stress the point of purchasing quality extinguishers only and how to pick up an extinguisher by the handle. Fluffing the extinguishers increases the chance of breaking the seal and having someone zip tie the pull pin, with the modern siliconized dry chemical powders fluffing isn’t necessary. Halon extinguishers can and are refilled with reconditioned surplus Halon, Halon 1211 extinguishers are still sold. Again Glen did a good job, he’s knowledgeable and a good trainer. Although it’s a chunk of change I’d recommend up grading to the system described that will shutdown the blowers, vents, and engines I had a guy bring in his singed system cylinder,he said it did not put the fire out and his boat burned to about the waterline. His Halon system didn’t have the bells and whistles to shut everything down the diesel sucked in Halon into the intake and right out the exhaust and kept running along with the fire.

Bill, thank you for the info. Glen did a phenomenal job, and took so much time to go everything with us. I did leave out quite a bit of his information since it would have pushed the video too long. I definitely plan to upgrade the fixed-mount system in the engine room. We just have to be aware of the situation and shut the engines down manually if there is a fire. Luckily I have a camera in the engine room and smoke alarms that will alert me, so we should be able to identify a fire pretty quickly. Also, I would like to have the manual-pull feature so that we don't have to sit and wait for the mounted extinguisher to reach the temperature to deploy.

Hi Butch, Great information. Glad to see a new video from you. I did want to add a couple of suggestions that people might find helpful. I highly recommend that everyone have at least one fire blanket on their boat. Definitely one by the galley and one by a bbq grill if you have one on board. Much better to quickly put out a grease or oil fire than an extinguisher. The one I like best is called Kovenex. It has better properties than the usual fiberglass or wool blankets. They are a little harder to find, but are available from www.thegrommet.com Also many people might not know about a product called Element Fire Extinguishers. Like the gentleman in your video mentioned every country has there own standards and Element Fire Extinguishers are rated in Europe. They won't count towards the Coast Guard required number of extinguishers, but they have several advantages: 1. Depending on the size they last 5 to 10 times longer than those 5 lb. extinguishers in your video 2. They leave no residue of any kind 3. Work on all types of fires 4. Never expire or need service 5. Have no gas or harmful chemicals, you can breath it in all day with no ill effects. 6. Small and compact and can be put close to where they are needed. The only down side is they are a bit pricey. There is a lot of information on them on their web site: www.elementfire.com Plenty of youtube videos on their product too including one on Jay Leno's Garage. Hope that information is helpful.

Hey Paul, thanks so very much! I am glad you brought up the fire blanket. I have been planning to get one or two on board, and I totally forgot to mention that. A good friend of mine actually runs a textile business that specializes in fire suppressing materials, and she is going to give me a blanket next time we see each other. I can't remember the name of the company though, shamefully. They even made special covers for the turbos on their 60' Hatteras Sportfish. I didn't know about the Element Fire Extinguishers, thank you. I will definitely look in to those. I was also at a conference recently and came across a new type of fire extinguisher company called Rusoh, www.rusoh.com/. Their product is a self-service, multi-purpose, reloadable dry chemical extinguisher. Definitely another one to look in to. I really appreciate the additional information! And on another note, we need to get together sometime soon, finally! -Butch

Definitely would love to get together sometime. I’m heading to the Riviera Dunes Marina in Palmetto tomorrow morning to check it out then stopping at the Harborage Marina in St. Pete on the way back. Still haven’t found a definite place to put my boat yet. I have some time. It won’t be delivered until December, but I’ve been looking for over a year and starting to get a little nervous. Very few slips in the area for 60 ft. & 18 ft. beam.

Very nice. Yeah not an easy task to find a desirable slip, let alone one that can accept that size vessel. Let me know how the search goes. I know that Riviera Dunes is a great facility, and well protected, but a little remote. And the Harborage seems to be quite populated these days, but fantastic facility and location. There is always the Vinoy, altough the east winds can be a bit of a pain, but I love it there.
