Putting Robokiller app to the test - will it stop aggressive robocalls? | WSOC

Some robocallers are legitimate companies with aggressive sales tactics, but many are outright scams. Criminals talking about helping with credit cards, interest rates, or student loans. Some even claim to be the IRS in order to steal victim’s money.
The Federal Trade Commission sponsored a contest to identify and block robocalls and the app that won is appropriately called “Robokiller.”

Robokiller has worked great for me. The calls that get through, let them start talking then move quietly whisper as if someone is there "We've got another one, hurry up and trace it". They'll immediately hang up and never call back

I have been using this app for almost a year and still get robocalls. The database is fairly extensive but so many new numbers keep popping up there is no way for any app to keep up with all the scammers. The callers have gotten smarter and will often hang up fairly quickly after the dialogue starts. Still, fun to go back and listen to what has been recorded by the app.

Only thing is, most scammers are making thousands of calls at once with a machine doing all the talking as well. One robocall answer isn't wasting any of their time in this case

I google the numbers just to make sure they aren't real businesses. Then block them immediately. I've been doing this since day one and I rarely get calls anymore.

I have had robookillet for years at first it worked great. Then I began to get more and more call coming through. I tried to cancel but could not get anywhere. No phone number no was to get to any apt to cancel. I had to change my account at the bank. I did not give the new account number to robookillet, but they still contained to deducked the money from my new account without my approvial. Now they have raised the amount from $2.99 to $3.27 coming from my account without my approval. I will keep trying

I add the numbers to my contacts and register them as "DO NOT ANSWER" so when I get a call I don't answer and eventually they stop calling.

RoboKiller was acquired by IAC (InterActiveCorp) in November, 2018. IAC quietly re-worked ALL of the AnswerBots so that they don't contain touch-tones anymore, which used to be what triggered a human being to come on the line and get their time wasted. Now, all the app does is block the calls. No revenge :( I hope IAC got a nice check out of that little deal.

@@tayk-47usa41 Custom messages weren't available yet when I wrote that. Seems like an acceptable compromise for IAC's partners, since only a small subset of RoboKiller users will actually take the time to make bots that would inconvenience them.

Scam calling is a real problem, but as someone who worked as a collections rep for a year or so (I was the guy you talk to so that your account *doesn't* go to the collections people that take your car and shit), this app pisses me off. I was here trying to remind people and work with them to make sure their bill gets paid, and I got these robot recordings all the time.

Most of the ones I get wait for you to speak, and then hang up. It's an automatic system verifying that each number has a person on the other end. Then it logs your number into a database for more scammers to use. Plus the number they are calling from is spoofed (not their real number)

Just received my Hyper Whistle 3 weeks ago!! Was getting up to 5 calls a day from Hilton Hotels!!! A few blasts from the whistle and amazingly the phone calls have stopped!!!🤣🤣😂😂!! Maybe if we knock out the hearing of these POS's this crap will stop!!!👍👍👍

$30 a year to block calls? Thats stupid. My phone has a number blocker already on it so i can stop anyone from calling back after the first time they try calling. If the number isnt in my phone or they dont leave a message, the number gets blocked and i never hear from it again.

You can make the area code the same as the ares youre trying to contact but you cant have the same phone number as someine else like youre claiming they are doing. Telecommunications dont work like that.

Three dollars for the app a month when you can just do it in the settings on your iPhone since iOS 7 with the iPhone 4s and above it’s called block unknown callers It says I’m straight to voicemail you don’t have to listen to the voicemail but at least your phone doesn’t ring and then you could just delete the recent call list and if you want to you can block them but it sounds I’m straight to voicemail your phone won’t even ring

They claim that the answer bots are intelligent but this is completely false. It’s nothing more than a message. Also, it will block some important legitimate calls, and if you’re not careful you will miss some calls and there are consequences to that.

if somebody called from my mothers phone number and scammed somebody, the person will have reported that number to put in a database. Picture the scenario, I have robokiller installed to stop them, my mother is about to die if i don’t help her, she calls me to get her out of her situation, because of the number being reported I now can not call my mother or answer that call. I like how these news coverage specials fervently boast about robokiller like it's free of charge. It isn't, they ask for credit card. And they're not cheap either, running up to around 10 bucks a month. Why not when you have the time, energy and cajones, make up your own prank reply every now and then. Back in the days before Do Not Call existed we'd get more than 20 telemarketing phone calls a day. The day DNC wen into effect it was glorious silence. Nowadays we get 5-10 robos a day; bad but not as bad as it was back then.
