I think the best way to make it happen is a government petition. The UK car community could get 100k signatures easily and this would have to be discussed in parliament. Where politics is all about money, it must be cheaper to invest in synthetic fuels than it is to build an entire infrastructure around EVs. Not to mention the "disposal" of ICE cars, of which there are millions.

The politicians don’t care, and manufacturers know this - but electric is today cash cow …. They’ll force everyone in to electric, just like they did diesel, and then when the next thing comes along they’ll tell us all to get out of electric ….. just follow the money

The issue though is scale, P1 cannot make more fuel if there is no demand for it, but nobody is going to spend £5 a litre when normal petrol is £1.80 and thus with no demand they cannot scale up production.

The politicians have been pushing EVs because they have taken money from China to do so. Chuna used to have ZERO market share, now suddenly they get on average over 40% of market share from all EV sales in America and Europe! And they want oil and gas consumption to crash in America and Europe because they gain nothing from those industries, and when demand sinks and it lowers prices they can get their supply they have to buy in cheaper.

Politicians' eyes are already wide open, ie the push to electric/green has nothing whatsoever to do with emissions or climate; and everything to do with the agenda they want to accomplish under the guise of "climate". As such they will never stop. Unfortunately, "climate-based" restrictions forced onto the public form the linchpin of their agenda moving forward; thus anything that solves the need for these restrictions will not be allowed in the mainstream. Not to get too heavy but it is what it is.

The big "win" for synthetic fuels are logistics, it can all slot perfectly into the existing delivery system. Outside of the production, we could use all existing infrastructure and swap overnight, EV's require significant investment across the board, and are non viable for a number of people. As Benjamin explains, a blended approach is the perfect balance.

That's why. The EV push is really just absolutely massive corruption to further China's global goals.

Very interesting. One of the massive benefits of developing these fuels is that all the infrastructure and skills we already have will still work. Everything from delivery of the fuel to the maintenance of engines etc, as well as the most environmentally friendly vehicle being one that is already built. The key question seems to be how to create scale…

Great Content tbh. I've been waiting to see this since you mentioned that you were looking into it more. Agreed I think that SV showed back in Silverstone that Synthetic Fuels is a possible way forward. Whilst EV's are 1 alternative, I've never been convinced about them being the sole alternative. EV's are good if you're travelling less than 100 miles a day or so, but as we all know, there are plenty of times when we do a lot more miles than what's available with an EV Charge. The World is a big place to explore and EV's limit what can be explored atm. Having sustainable Competition in the Fuel's market will push the boundaries beyond what's currently possible. LPG and Synthentic Fuels are the better alternatives to EV's. EV's can be controlled by too many other people who have a Laptop and the right software.

I’m happy there is a backup plan for when this electric car thing fails because the politicians are trying to dictate innovation instead of allowing the market and natural selection to pick the best solution. I would love to start filling my Ferrari up with carbon neutral fuel today if it was easily available here in the states. When I first ordered my 2016 Cayenne Diesel my hope was to run bio-fuel, but all the emissions equipment in the car didn’t let that happen.

In Sweden there is already a certain amount of synthetic fuel mixed into the petrol and if I remember correctly it is 15%. The problem with politicians around the world is that they don't listen properly to those who know about the substance that is in the batteries for electric cars. Because they have said that there is not enough of that substance (don't remember what it is called) to mine around the world and make all cars electric and be able to change to new batteries. They also believe that digging up its substance in nature is not environmentally friendly either. Then 3 different researches have now concluded that electric cars are not good for human health in close order, as electric cars are heavier because of the batteries, the car tires wear out faster at the same time as the wear on the roads increases and the tires and the asphalt release particles that people breathe in and deteriorates our health. Karolinska University Hospital has calculated that in Stockholm's inner city alone, hospital costs will increase by at least one billion Swedish kronor per year. To take care of and care for those whose health has been affected by precisely the particles one has breathed in from the asphalt and from the tires of electric cars. Among others, Belgium has done this study on tire wear and increased wear on the roads caused by electric vehicles. More research in this area is ongoing. So the world really needs synthetic fuel, partly for what I mentioned but also think what politicians have not thought about is if only electric vehicles were allowed. What an environmental catastrophe it would be, if it were completely forbidden to drive all the 100 million fossil fuel powered cars from one day to the next. Unless politicians make sure to invest even more in synthetic fuel. As for synthetic jet fuel, it already exists today. Earlier this year, Rolls Royce aircraft engine told a KZbinr who is just filming airplanes, that from 2030 all airplanes can fly with environmentally friendly fuel that is synthetic.

Ugh not at all, this is crazy the amount of rubbish being plastered around on this. Synthetic fuels are carbon neutral on paper, but when you consider the amount of energy being put in vs fuel produced, its not that great. Same goes for hydrogen. There is room for them, and older cars factor into that but what you’ve said is rubbish, synthetic fuels are NOT a realistic approach and over little chance of new ICE investment over EV for newer cars.

The Finnish government have just released a report stating that carbon neutrality is literally impossible due to lithium reserves not being large enough to meet the demand to do it.

Great video and Being the owner f both modern “ICE” cars and my cherished old Porsche 914, synthetic fuels could be the answer to saving our old cars and as mentioned providing a practical means of Neutralizing the Carbon Impact of vehicles today and carrying us in to the future! P1 is from what I understand one of a few companies that are researching this technology so all good and somewhat promising news!

I’ve been saying for years synthetic fuels are the best bet for lowering emissions. Electric just isn’t practical or affordable yet for most people and as you said it’s not particularly green to produce the electricity. Not to mention mining the materials needed to produce the batteries etc. Porsche has been working on synthetic fuels for a while now so the more people get involved the longer we can keep the billions of current cars on the road rather than spending more resources to replace them.

EVs do not work in urban settings without far too expensive multi-trillion electric grid and power plant work, millions of chargers, and many trillions in subsidies. They are inefficient if the temperatures are not optimal, everyone is being lied to about their consumption as all charging losses, battery heating, cabin heating, and huge losses whenever the battery isn't at optimal temperature are being actively hidden from us. Even the pro-EV fraudulent 'studies' themselves prove that unless you drive an EV very much per year they are actually dirtier than ICE cars! And when using honest numbers and not fraudulently leaving out lots of EV consumption and pollution sources we can see that EVs are basically no cleaner than ICE overall, only AT BEST in some cases at maximum like 20% or thereabouts! Bankrupting our nations for only at best a few percent reduction compared to fossil-powered cars makes no sense. Because already now there are several far cleaner fuels for ICE and it's certain we can power most of them with clean fuel. For a fraction of the cost of EVs. Cost is incredibly important because the number one determinant we have found to reliably show a nation's ability to reduce emissions is their wealth. Basically it's a clear rule: if your nation loses wealth, it loses ability to reduce emissions. Not only is ICE cars running (even partially) on clean fuels better than EVs already, but on top of that emissions reductions in other areas are far more important and impactful, so we must keep our economies healthy to be able to invest in those other solutions! The only reason EVs are being pushed is because China has paid billions in bribes per year to politicians, civil servants, the media, hundreds of organizations, 'scientists' etc. China gains massively as 75% of all value in batteries comes from China (and therefore they get lots of profits and gain market share). Think of how China had pretty much ZERO market share in the automotive markets in America and Europe. Now at least 30% of all EV value is China's share, and in most EVs a lot more with a massive amount fully made in China! For example basically all Teslas sold in Europe are made in China, by a Chinese-funded factory, with a fully Chinese supply chain (even the batteries are new Chinese battery which they buy from a Chinese company), and they are "Tesla" in name only. That was what Musk Agreed to in order to save Tesla from certain bankruptcy.

EV will work in urban environments until mass adoption means the infrastructure will be impossible to keep up with, in such densely populated areas. Think of all the flats, terraces, etc, that can't charge at home and then think of all those people having to que up to charge their cars, waiting whilst they charge, whilst others que, etc. Unless they pull something radical out then it's currently looking bleak.

You mentioned planes, I know a bit about that area. Electric planes simply don't work. There is 1 that has been certified, but its range is so low it basically can only be used for early training. The issue is energy density, batteries can't compare to fuels. You do already have SAF [Sustainable Aviation Fuel] which some airlines use at some bases, but it's early days. There is also 2 projects that are going on in the aviation world. The first being ZeroAvia and their hydrogen plane, and the second is Paddy Lowe's Zero Petroleum. Zero Petroleum has already had a plane flying on their fuel.

I do believe synthetic and biofuels are a much better alternative to electric, which every government is pushing right now. More work and focus should be done in both areas. I have some ideas to try optimise biofuels and thinking of starting to experimenting with some of them.

The problem is the value of the energy required to make it and how much of it you need, which is an enormous amount more than directly using electricity in a BEV. We're talking 5-10x as much. It's simply an astonishingly inefficient use of green energy. Yes it can work, but the fuel will be amazingly expensive compared to today's petrol with that price governed at a fundamental level. No amount of wishing for new technology will overcome the laws of thermodynamics.

Sam good and informative video however, what can us consumers do to help these types of fuels? £5 a litre is way too much to get people to even try the fuel, I know that P1 need to be able to scale up first to bring the price down but there won't be any demand at these prices, electric cars are too expensive also not everyone can afford a £35k+ EV, where are the small EV's with 150-200 mile range for £20k max? the EU regs have killed off the small engine cars and this is why everything is going the way of heavy SUV's! A new Mini is about £22k but an electric one is £30k someone that can afford £22k isn't going to be able to afford £30k.

Porsche and Lamborghini are investing in synthetic fuel. Believe Porsche have been working on this for a while, so fingers crossed the price will come down to affordable levels in the not to distant future

A couple of things I wish you had touched on: A direct comparison in terms of burn energy with traditional fuels. Is there any fuel consumption difference between this synthetic fuel and traditional fuels. There are always tradeoffs with anything in life (e.g. EV's don't break even on emissions until around the 100K mark). What are the tradeoffs with this synthetic fuel?

I don't have doubts about the synth. fuel. But that first startup was kinda pointless as a "test". Cause the fuel lines would still be full of normal dino juice. 😉

This needs to blow up. If it can put out zero emissions then there would literally be no “need” (emphasis on the need) for EV’s. And should be easier to roll out then trying to add charging stations and upgrading the grid for EV’s. Great video Sam!

Hey Sam, thank you so much for making this video and discussing the current misconceptions of electric cars, especially the fact that for the first 100k KM’s they’re mot more environmentally. I’m not sure how many times people swap their cars in their lifetime, but considering those who lease their cars for maybe 2-3 years, they would most likely not rack that many miles on the car where it starts to be more environmentally friendly than an ICE car. And that is if the battery lasts that long and is performing as well. You should also mention battery recycling because ultimately these batteries don’t run as long as internal combustion engines. A source online says only a small percentage of batteries from EV vehicles get recycled while the rest of them are wasted because it is so hard to recycle them, and EV companies aren’t making it any better by focusing on the longevity of the battery over the ease of recycling the battery WHEN it eventually stops working. And again, while it may seem that electric cars make more of an environmental impact on ICE cars due to their production, advancements in technology will eventually make it where it would no longer be the case… maybe 😅

Seeing these initatives gives me hope our passion will not just be ridden off the road so fast. Though doing some quick research synthethic fuels are still not there yet in terms of emissions, so it is good to see that companies are doing the research. They never will be, the point of them is to be carbon neutral which doesn't mean reducing emissions to zero it means not adding more carbon into the ecosystem. By using bio-stock to make the fuel the carbon in the fuel is coming out of the current carbon in the system which is unlike using fossil fuels which adds more carbon into the ecosystem. Emissions reduction happens after the fuel itself has been burned whether it's from an ICE car or a power plant.

Best way to do this is to "blend" ethanol into your fuels. India has been doing this for years - we'll soon reach 20% ethanol blending within 2 years. I am amazed this is still new to other countries lol

The push on evs is honestly pointless. The 3 largest shipping container ships together produce more co2 than all cars on the road combined. We also dont have renewable power grids and virtually no infrastructure for evs. We shouldn’t worry much about ice emissions

Forget doing a pod cast you need a video showing the science. To start do a running test showing what comes out the back. Maybe hook an engine up to two fuel tanks and do a running example of the difference measuring the emissions in real time. Even better use one of the three engines he mentioned as you'll have very dirty to now all squeaky clean. Food for thought and I look forward to watching.

This synthetic fuel argument is totally true, At this moment. We need it everywhere now! If adopting this large scale takes 10 years EV's will have become much cheaper to run allready. Great idea, little too late IMO Also, the reason to stop using ICE is we should stop pumping gasses in the atmosphere.. Synthetic fuels do nothing against that

Summed up the whole debate perfectly, Sam. However, I will also say, like EVs, synthetic fuels aren't a golden ticket, we need different solutions being used in different applications, to achieve the common goal. Small and medium-sized EVs for city cars, car sharing and family cars, because EVs are really comfortable and with development proceeding, as it is, it won't be too long before the EV emissions gap to ICEs will close right up. Then we have synthetic fuels or hydrogen, for long-distance, heavy-duty vehicles. E-fuels will also allow poorer countries to contribute to this global effort. Forget about saving the V8s and V12s, everyone will win, us car guys will just be the happy beneficiaries. Unfortunately, in the eyes of the average joe, anything with a tailpipe is going to "look evil and nasty" in the years to come. We as people in the know need to spread the word.

Great chat with P1 fuels- very relevant and recognising that current ICE cars / trucks / planes will need to see out their life to justify their initial imbedded carbon in production. Here comes the BUT. The best ICE cars run at 30% efficiency compared to 97% for EV, given the energy inputs into E/syn fuel production and distribution ( EV can be recharged from local PV source) the day will come when EV overall efficiency/cost will overcome the average ICE vehicles as they age off the roads. - for keeping enthusiast cars and aircraft running this is perfect.

Fascinating video Sam, fully agree with your perspective too. There's just so many questions around the true environmental impacts of EV's, I can't really understand why more isn't being done on synthetic fuels at the governmental level to make the 1bn+ ICE cars much much greener, essentially instantly. And tbh, if the price of owning ICE cars is €5-€6 a litre, as an enthusiast I wouldn't even be too bothered at that in 10 years' time, and that's before it being scaled up. Let's hope the political agendas can be side-lined a bit and the production of these greener fuels really accelerates in the next 10 years, it's already becoming a bigger deal in the aviation industry!

The reason why is because investments have been made and certain interest groups, who have lobbying powers, want them to pay off. Much more money in making you go out and buy brand new cars, then just changing the fuel type.

The absolute hypocrisy around oil is frustrating. Growing up in California I remember smog in LA. Now we have clean air and they are still pushing with no infrastructure plans to be ready for all electric. The basic questions are how to make and dispose of the battery and how to produce enough electricity?

Not to be forgotten that California had a massive push for everyone to install solar panels, 20 years ago, and now that they've reached the end of their lifespan there is a massive crisis because recycling them is almost impossible and they're now dumping huge amounts of heavy metals into waste sites.
