Use a bit of cutting oil on drill bit may help

I wear safety glasses when ever I hit anything with a hammer, I have seen a lot of things splinter off.

Here's the old curmudgeon again, for proper alignment of the holes on either side of the coupler the drilling should be done in a drill press with a vice so the holes through the rod will be in line with said holes in coupler, guaranteeing that the pins will fit tightly. Doing it by hand is a guarantee of wonky holes.

Resouceful, yes. WoW, they have come far in baby monitor technology. Good pin mushrooming , If one is successful is there something to complain about ? Good teamwork.

Hmmm. The original 32 drive shaft was a tube, as was the 36...the later years had the solid shaft, but used a support bearing inside the torque tube to keep it spinning smoothly and straight...would this be necessary to consider in this case?
