My guess... Elon said on recent 3rd row podcast that Model Y will switch to a single casting design in a few months when the new casting machine shows up (that is big enough to cast the Model Y underbody as a one-piece. It's currently two pieces). I believe when they switch to a single casting it will allow better geometry of seating for the 3rd row. Possibly front facing...

Tesla sale manager in my area told me to expect a model X style 3rd row. Also, 7 seater picture from Tesla shows a front facing 3rd row. My assumption is that they will change the rear of the model y to allow it. Elan mentioned during the last 3rd row podcast that Model Y will move from 3 pieces to a single one. For a seven seater, the 2nd row will float and move forwards.

Curious if Tesla would have a redesigned/taller hatch for the 7 seater version for extra headroom for a forward facing seats. The Y configurater shows $3K for the 3rd row option compared to what BMW in an X5 lists their 3rd row option as $1.7K including air suspension so from a cost perspective assuming seats, different hatch, etc would be covered.
@Peter-oh3pm4 жыл бұрын
I think making 7 seater where all are looking front needs major changes, but it is possible. According to some pictures the rear motor is in front of the rear axle. If the rear drive train is turned around, motor behind the rear axle and the floor modified accordingly, it is possible. That needs different kind of casted bottom between rear wheels and lots of other changes. But those changes gives the necessary space for feet between 2 and 3 row.

This would be really cool to see how the model s rear jump seats fit in the model Y as I think that is much more the form factor we are likely to see. But kudos for doing this with what you had laying around. Keep up the great work.

I believe once the manufacturing change is made to allow for 3rd row Y production we'll see exactly how it will be configured. To my knowledge, they put off the 3rd row production because there will be a significant change made to the manufacturing & design of the 3rd row variant that would simply be inefficient and costly to undertake now. They wanted to get the Y out of the door, into the public's hands and once it had an established foothold on the compact crossover market, they'd crank up the 3rd row production. I'm waiting patiently on the ability to place my order. I regularly go check and design my Y and gaze longingly at the grayed out $3,000 3rd row option lol. Coming from a Nissan Altima to a Y will still be a step up for me, w/ the extra added cargo space & option to haul a few more folks in a pinch. It definitely won't compete w/ my wife's 3 row ICE family hauler, but it gets us in the electric game.

One way the 7 seater could work with forward-facing seats is to take both driver and 2nd-row passenger legroom (i seem to remember something about the 2nd row seats being on sliding rails for the 7 seat config, to adjust the legroom balance), so it'd be more comparable to a Kona for the 2nd seat, and the 3rdrow t would be like the back seat in a coupe. (altho the battery has the rise in a place where maybe that can't even work, unless they have a different battery pack configuration)

Isn’t there a button inside that hatch to open it from inside? It would be convenient to be able to open and close the hatch without a phone from the inside with an easy to reach button. The third row seats could be thinner to fit with more headroom. Also, eliminate the frame underneath and make them non-adjustable to save space.

I would hope that Tesla implements the seven-seater option in a manner similar to the way the Model X employs its seven-seater option, but with one minor difference: put the bench seat in the rear row like many other (ICE) SUVs that come standard with room for seven. I rode in a 2009(?) Dodge minivan on a road trip to Yellowstone National Park in the summer of 2010 where it had room for seven, and it had the two captain's chairs in the middle row. Road trip down memory lane aside, if Tesla were to offer a six-seater Model Y, I would especially hope that Tesla implements that exactly like they did with the Model X and include room for even a fourth row, but given the space constraints involved with doing so, that optional fourth row would have to be used only for booster seats for very small children. Also, as for Tesla graying out the seven-seater option on the Model Y customizer, I think they will reenable that option once we get closer to when the 2021 model vehicles are due for release to market, likely by this fall.
@RRBish4 жыл бұрын
I bet the 2nd row will be pushed up a few inches to make room for the third row. Rear facing seems like the most viable option. However, I believe it will do as well as the jump seats in the early Model S's. It's certainly not a viable vehicle for a growing family with more than 2 kids, IMO. I can see them not opening the 7 seat option again, trying to get those who have already pre-ordered to change, then cancelling that option fully.

Joking aside, safety would be a major factor for me. Modern motor vehicle seats are generally designed to help prevent or at least reduce severity of whiplash. So if the backrests are too low there's nothing to prevent whiplash for passengers above 8 or maybe 9yrs of age. Also possibilities of head injuries for taller passengers if the car goes over large bumps in the road, particularly at speed. Hmmm. Not convinced by a 7 seat option. Tesla might have been better off never having had option of 7 seats in the first place & since Y was always supposed to be the more affordable option to X then a more basic Y wouldn't have been a detraction for most prospective buyers. After all, how many people who buy SUV's ever or how often use their extra seats? Average purchaser wants better visibility and better cargo space.

The 3rd row seats in the model Y are lower backed and face forwards If you look closely at thee Tesla Model Y launch video you will see them. And yes when they get the molding sorted for the rear hatch floor it should lower the seat a few inches. It does look to be a snug fit in the 3rd row but adults can travel there in some comfort.

The seats you were trying out in this space were engineered to occupy much larger areas in other cars, of course. I assume Tesla will design the Model Y third-row seats to have far less internal structure and much thinner padding. It was fun to watch, though!

Thanks for testing. I think that there are three ways to make the third row work: the 7-seater would be front-wheel drive only, as having the back seats where they show on the web site or prototypes, your legs go where the rear motor and diff are. Without those in there, you would have similar depth available there like in the deep tub in the back for legs. The other option is to make it the first Tesla with hub motors in the back and that would also free up that room. The third would be to move back the motor/diff back, but that may get awkward. Either would also need second-row seat changes, probably on tracks and with the ability for the third-row passengers to quick-fold them as move the forward, etc. Since they seemed to be taking orders for four-wheel drive 7-seaters while it was available (someone confirm?) and the extra $3k cost, the latter two options may be it. Any way takes some time and work and explains why it takes an extra year for the option to be available.

Not to use when in motion only for looks and when the Toyota is stationary. But if you can manage to do it with the help of a professional you should be fine. Still could be some slim issues in safty. Heard the rules never put a rear facing child in the rear seat. It’s dangerous in the event of a motor vehicle collision. So simple solution just buy a suv with a 5k red row seat. 😅😂🎉
