OMG! Your portfolio looks amazing! I hope whoever gets to see this, will be impressed! I'm a big fan of children's books, especially the picture books. Some of my most favourite illustrators are Marcus Pfister and Inge & Dieter Schubert. I really love their soft watercolour illustrations. Your illustrations really make me think of them! Good luck with finding a publisher. Your illustrations deserve to being published! 💖💖💖

Beautiful illustrations, Love the animal characters you make. I work in a school and honestly there isn't enough traditional/watercolour art illustrations in them, children love them and you tend to get very graphic/digital type artwork in the large majority of books. I wish you luck, your work really stands out.

I love your artwork Jess! I also use the screw post bind method, and I love it! You can switch out the images whenever you have new ones. I also love that your images are grouped by character theme, genius idea! I too feel like every year I get a little better but am still chasing the ideal of what I would like my art to be. I guess we all do that. but your work is so polished and charming for only having been at it for a year!
@studioxjess7 жыл бұрын
Pamela Goodman what a lovely compliment, thanks Pamela! I am happy I chose the screw post method, definitely the most versatile I think :) Regarding the work - it's pretty much taken me 34 years of painting to get this point - ok, maybe 30, as I probably didn't come out of the womb paintbrush in hand ☺️ I have been focusing on my children's illustration for a year, that's true, but it's definitely been a slow build with a LOT of plateaus, in fact in on one right now. I'd love to see your work too! where's the best spot to check it out?

Thank you so much for sharing. I'm actually just getting back to my job search, and my Camden case just isn't cutting it anymore. I've had this notion that everything has to be on black matte board, but this really challenged that. Much more organized and versatile than just shoving free-floating mat boards in a case. Killer presentation, btw. Thanks again!

What is it like having a portfolio review? How do you prepare for it? This is so very inspiring! Thanks for sharing !
@studioxjess7 жыл бұрын
Liz Z It kind of depends on who is reviewing your work. I think it's important to get feedback from as many people as possible! When you are ready for it. It's always very subjective so, one person's tastes might not match another person's. But, if you get different critiques you can look out for the common themes. If everyone loves one piece and doesn't like another, that's probably "truth" but if there's an art director who just doesn't like penguins, you can ignore that. I think you prepare by making work from the soul and developing a voice that's authentic... then when you put it out there divorce your emotions from it, and try to appreciate any tough critiques as opportunities to get better. 👌

I loved the Leia at the end - really nice! :) Your work is amazing! I don't study this kind of Illustration but this was great. The chapter idea was really cool and something I might test in my own portfolio, I'll be studying games design next year but I always struggle with making my portfolio flow nicely. :P For each character in my portfolio I usually show: - Page full thumbnails and doodles. - Larger version of one character thumbnail (rough sketch) on a page with notes and a couple of reference images. - 1 or 2 Pages of different heads/hair, clothing, weapon ideas. - Combine some of those small ideas into three final character ideas that resemble the original silhouette. - Final fully detailed drawing of the character. I usually use 5 pages just for one character, I really like showing how my ideas developed instead of keeping it all in my head.
@studioxjess7 жыл бұрын
Jay Wood hey Jay, thank you! Yes I really like the idea of showing the whole thought process behind design, I'm a total nerd for that kind of stuff. Interesting no one did that in their children's illustration portfolios for this conference... but I also wouldn't really be able to because most of these are just straight up watercolor on paper! (Which is the beauty in having a pretty loose style, you can be super lazy ;) I really love the work of character designers though it seems like it takes so much patience and precision!
@AgentDigits7 жыл бұрын
Studio Jess Yeah I love character design - I watched various film/game documentaries and got obsessed with it! I love seeing how different my favourite characters in a franchise could have looked, it's also super cool to see how various designs are reused for other characters. I'm jealous that you can be a little lazy haha! Yeah, drawing a ton characters can be pretty time consuming, I think the end result is always worth it though!! I only really draw a detailed, realistic character for my final design - otherwise I'd be there all day :P I find it difficult to make my portfolio stand out - one of my teachers came up with the idea of making a storyboard showcasing how my characters could interact with other characters or fight - "it all depends on what you make the character for" he told me. I think adding a little story at the end of each characters section in my portfolio could be a cool idea!! Anyways, your work is super cute! Thanks for replying :)

Hii love your work! I was just wondering, it seems you have drawn them traditionally with watercolour, how did you manage to scan them? When I scan my traditional works onto my computer, the quality and colour always go down, and that meant printing was more of a disaster and the final outcome never turned out very great. Please let me know if you have any special scanning advice:'D Ahaha thank you

Studio Jess what I mean is that portfolio is simple and made out of simple materials. You could have made it yourself (probably even better one!) and even personalise it more however whole idea how it is made is really clever and innovative
@studioxjess7 жыл бұрын
Iryska totally! I hear ya - and I did consider that, but the deal is I didn't have the extra time to spend to make it from scratch, and for me, the $50 was worth saving me a day of making it - but if I did have time I think that's my ideal way to go and I'd recommend because almost everyone had this same portfolio.
@АлёнаИлясова-я1л7 жыл бұрын
Hello! Do you have any idea how to make the same cover yourself?
@bearded-cat7 жыл бұрын
Алёна Илясова you just have to get 2 perspex sheets (there is wide variety of these on eBay) and hinges (there are really pretty decorative ones). Drill holes through perspex and attach them with screws (once again there is wide variety of these). It shouldn't cost more than 15 euro
