We let our chickens out in whole yard, everyday. They go back to coop to lay their eggs. They love it!!!

I let ours out mid day, after they have had time to lay their eggs, otherwise they go make nests in the field.

You remind me of my Dad...he would collect anything and everything...and somehow found a use for it all!! Sadly he has now passed away and it's now coming up to 4 years since his passing!! We are still trying to clean his shed out!! LOL!!

Wow! I just had to do that myself, about a year and a half ago 😒 unfortunately my brothers showed up to pick up the boat and fishing gear and cleaned out half the shop including all the items/tools I’d put my name on, mom sold the house so I didn’t get to take my time, but my husband also saves everything‘just in case I might need in one day’ but until now he didn’t have any projects going on so he didn’t use anything, we moved to some acreage now and many of his hoarded do dads have come in very handy!!

I love chicken labor! I put a piece of cheap plywood & a layer of insulation under the steel roof to make it quieter for the chicks during hail/heavy rains.

I like this idea. In NE Texas our metal roofed barn becomes 30-40 degrees warmer than outside. I think insulation would reduce the heat transfer as well.

Love it! Unfortunately around here the predators love free range chicken. My chicken tractor has an enclosed area for foraging.
@FineFeatheredHomestead3 жыл бұрын
We let our 2 hens free-range (half the days) and within a week they weeded the garden thoroughly, and I only had to cover the dahlia beds and a chase them out of tomato plants a couple times. Letting them peck over small portions of the compost tumbler every few days has really sped up decomposition - we just shovel what remains back in the tumbler to process fully. It is so nice to just watch them enjoy all the weeding! If I hired a gardener to do that much meticulous work between canas trees and lots of other plants, it would have cost 8x the price of the hens. If I had done it myself, it would have been long, tedious and miserable toil. Soon we'll get eggs too! They are such natural partners, we love our hens!

When reusing the steel roofing you really don't need to cut much. If you need 8 feet and you have two 6 foot sections, just overlap them. When you reuse them the next time, you still have longer sections.

I'd really like to know where I can find that portable fencing. We live in town and our chickens have a fenced run. But I would love portable fencing to set up for more free ranging in the summer. Our yard is not currently fenced in, that project is a few years out yet.

There's no way that fence would keep the raccoons out of my chickens. They are horrible where I live. They are worse than the skunks and hawks. My chicken yard has 6 foot tall hardware cloth with the bottom buried in the ground and they have still managed to get in.

Love the chickshaw. Great idea. 👍 ?Questions? How do you clean the chickshaw? Do you put the girls in the nesting boxes, or, do they find them on their own? How often do you have to retrieve chickens from outside of that fence?
