hi lauren! i was a parapro in a second grade class last year and the teacher i worked with gave each student a clothespin and when they took a book from a bin, they attached their clothespin to the bin so they knew where to put their book back!

I really tried to make my kids as independent with the library and so it would make my life easier. I had labels for bins like you but I also had a colored dot sticker on each bin. So say I did a small blue dot on the dinosaur container, all the books in the dinosaur container had a blue dot on the front cover. Students would look at the color dot on the bin and the dot on their book, and place the book where it belonged!

I’m a cut, laminate, cut kinda girl too 😄. I love how bright and colorful your classroom is and those library labels are super cute! I would laminate the labels just because you know some kiddos will take the paper out of that adhesive pouch.

I know you’ve mentioned in other vlogs that your classroom is “old”, but I love it so much. There is something so charming about it… It gives me all the childhood feels. Have a wonderful year from one teacher to another. (Heading into year 18- third grade). 💗

I do a similar book return system as the one you mentioned. It works great!

I reshelve my books myself and I teach fifth grade. I think it would definitely be worthwhile in first. I just have in place they put a book when they’re done with it and I periodically go through and put them back on the shelves.

I agree… no need to laminate the book labels since they’re in a pocket. I was just wondering… have you tried laminating the full sheet then cutting them out. I do that all the time and it works great. Then I only have to cut once. Just a thought. 😊

I've been keeping an eye out for your next video. I discovered you a week ago and have watched all of your videos. I am a teacher in the UK and I currently teach a mixed Y5/6 class. The children range from 9-11 years old so I'm not entirely sure what grade that would be. I think that we teach in similar areas (please correct me if I'm wrong). My school is located in what would be classed as an area of high deprivation. Our children are under priveliged and we have high levels of unemployment. Many of our families struggle and our school is a hub of support for all of them. I wouldn't work in any other school though. I love my families, and my kids are so special to me. From what I have seen from you, you feel the same about your children too. I go back to school on Thursday and Friday for staff training and then the children come back on September 6. I have really been enjoying your videos and I think that you are a wonderful teacher. Your kids are lucky to have you! Xx

I think the book quarantine is a great idea, but who has time to reorganise books every few days? Once the children are familiar with the library, I would number the bins. I would not colour-code (or only colour code; you could have a number and colour system of you are extra ) as chances are you have at least one colour-blind child in the class. Then just make matching number stickers for the bins. I would perhaps even keep the book return till Friday, then have children librarians put the books back in the library. That way, they all have at least the weekend to sit.Love your classroom, btw.

Just use the sticky clips you used for the sound cards to use on the numbers chart on the white wall.

Your library looks awesome! Fourteen students would be a dream! I had 29 2nd graders my last year (retired May 2020--planned not "covid-inspired" 🤣)

Classrooms didn't look like this when I was in school, and neither did the teachers!! What?! No George Washington and Abraham Lincoln at the front of the room? Where is the big map of the United States? Individual desks lined up in rows? Aside from liking my own personal desk, with a space for storage, (of which I have several in my home, to this day!), I love your cozy, homey setup. It reminds me of my in-home daycare classroom. You are adorable!

What goes inside each folder for your reading small groups? Is it one per child or one per “group”?

I love your videos! I taught first and second grade 20 years ago and quit due to some health concerns, so it's nice to see your videos to remember back because I miss it terribly! Suggestion - Your clock that doesn't work, that would drive me nuts! Why don't you make some kind of circle poster, like a smiley face out of bright yellow tagboard and tape it over the clock?? And/or, turn the clock into an "O" and make a saying out of it like your other clock, but cover the clock with a big white circle for the "O" or something. My husband even commented to me about the clock, and he never comments on my teacher videos I watch, LOL! Have a great year! From Julie
