Gregor shot this video of our museum's PV-2D Harpoon from the CAF's Lockheed C-60 Loadstar. Thanks for the great video Gregor!
This was the Harpoons first big trip to Oshkosh for Airventure and then to the Gathering at Topeka. The old gal did real well and we were lucky enough to meet two WWII PV-2 veterans. In this video Bill Borst is sitting in his WWII crew position at the radio operators station. What an honor to have Bill come flying with us. His son was also on board and his grandson was in the other PV-2 Harpoon, Attu Warrior, next to us. It was a good day!

Hey Taigh, I noticed when you departed AirVenture, she was smoking a bit... I presume, no news being good news, that it was a normal condition. After meeting up with you at OSH, I went back and reviewed all your recovery videos. So cool that you were able to save her. I wear the T-shirt with pride, and look forward to seeing her again sometime... perhaps in Stockton during a visit... MJF

All radials smoke, some smoke alot, upon starting as oil pools in the lower cylinders.

@@amramjose That is true... I was surprised to see one engine still smoking after takeoff, though, as I watched him depart.

My father flew as a crew member on a PV-1 Ventura in Morocco during WWII. Does anyone know the difference between a Harpoon and a Ventura? They look the same to me.

They shared a lot in common. Same engines and props. Same basic configuration but the PV-2 had longer wings, larger more rounded tail and a bomb bay that could hold a torpedo fully enclosed. The PV-2 Harpoon was the improved version of the PV-1 Ventura using all of the lessons learned from the Ventura in service.

@@twinbeechdotcom Indeed the PV1 was retired around 1943 and PV2 went into service, with better avionics and control surfaces, longer wings. Side by side they look nearly identical; there is a PV1 on static display at the Sanford Orlando International Airport in Florida.

@@amramjose Both were from the 'Hudson', based upon the Electra Lode-Star light freighter. Oddly, the Brits preferred the Hudson (less power, but greater Range) to the Ventura (and, S.A. AF nick named Venturas 'Pigs'?), but the Harpoon, with it's longer wings, better range, and certain up-fits in Radar, stayed around well into the Korean Conflict as an Anti-Ship Patroller (not a 'Bomber', like the B-34 was hoped-to-be able at).

I noticed that this Harpoon has a retractable tailwheel. Some other Harpoons had a fixed tailwheel that obstructed the field of fire of the ventral guns. Does anyone understand the situation?
