This is situational, if you somehow combine all 100 Gargantuar into a really big super Gargantuar. Then most AOE plants would lose and single target plants would win

And let make an example: if each shot of a single target plant is 10 damage and AOE is 5, and there are 2 zombies each with 5 HP the AOE only need to shoot once, while the other the shoot twice to kill all the zombie. (The single target plant wasted 5 extra damame for each zombie) But if there is just one zombie with 10 HP instead, now the single target plant only need to shoot once, while the AOE has to shoot twice.
