Actinoids: These elements have electrons filling the 5f orbitals. The 5f orbitals are not as good at shielding the outer electrons from the nucleus. Because the 5f orbitals in actinoids don’t shield as well, the outer electrons feel a stronger pull from the nucleus. This stronger pull makes the atoms shrink more as you move from one element to the next in the actinoid series compared to the lanthanoid series. So, in short, the actinoid contraction is greater because the 5f orbitals are less effective at shielding the outer electrons from the nucleus’s pull.
