Whitewick's Abandoned Railways Often wondered if the exposure issue is due to having the wrong Exposure Value (EV) setting on the camera..if the camera is set to ,say, +2 EV it will always change exposure by 2 stops, regardless of any additional ND filters etc. Hope you get it sorted , as it must be frustrating!

Only just started watching these, what a fantastic project! I grew up in Bramley and did a whole history project on the line when I was at school, me and my friends spent far too much time cycling up and down that line. The platform at Bramley was slowly restored when I was a teenager, late 90's into 2000's. I believe the original metal station sign (not shown in the video, its on the back of the 'up' platform concrete sign) was found in someones shed!

Really good stuff. I went to Christ’s Hospital as a pupil (my parents taught and worked there for nearly 30 years) and it was a great place to live. The old Guildford platforms at CH were derelict and had trees growing out of them - good to see they’ve been restored! Baynards is such a beautiful station - such weird attitude from the owners 🤷‍♂️

I used to walk this line regularly when I lived in Worthing. A point of interest at Bramley and Wonersh. There is a tiny remnant of the old station building on the up platform, containing the post box. When they demolished the building, they left the fragment containing the box instead of replacing it! The line was a Beeching casualty in the late 60's both this section and the line from Christ's hospital to Shoreham. In my early explorations of was not yet an official path and was very overgrown.

I wasn't so fortunate, the first time I went through Christ's Hospital Station was in the early 70's, after the Cranleigh/Guildford branch had already closed, the old platforms and the station canopies were all still in situ at the time, and the whole place had an extremely dilapidated feel to it.

Another old rail line with scenic possibilities! That double bridge reminds me of what the old New York Central did on the Hudson river. They wanted to eliminate all the grades along the Hudson river to create the "Water Level Route". In some places where the RR crossed a creek or "kill" as the Dutch called them, the bridges also had room for wagons. So they built a new, higher bridge over them. Eventually all of them were torn down and replaced with modern auto bridges. You still see the remnants though, in many places you pass under the railroad and turn to cross the "kill" on a bridge, and you wonder why they make such a sharp turn.

The bridge was called Ashton Avenue Bridge. Also of interest is the link from Temple Meads to the harbour, which runs under St Mary Redcliffe. And going past Redcliffe Caves, which are open to the public on Open Doors Day. We used to have steam trains running down both sides of the Floating Harbour. All a bit urban.

Interesting story about the bridge. When I saw the picture I initislly thought that the lower arch was a strengthening arch as was used on a bridge on the former Cleveland Railway line between Guisborough and Loftus. This bridge was close to an ironstone mine and suffered from subsidence.

Another interesting video Paul, it was a tragedy when the train was bombed. Kilmarnock, near where I was brought up had an incident during WW2. A German bomber saw the glow from the locomotive firebox, missed the train, and destroyed a nearby house and other bombs blew up some graves in the cemetery. If you drive along the street, one house is newer than the rest. The location was Kay Park Junction.

There is a double bridge on the ex GCR line from barnsley to sheffield , the line was built in 1854 but had to be raised on the wombwell to dovecliff section when the midland sheff barnsley line was built in 1890 , it lost it's passager trains in 53 and was severed as a through route when the m1 was built, the double bridge is known as convicts tunnel and a bit of a magnet for ghost hunters , you passed within 100 meters of it when you were on the leeds sheffield barnsley line in a previous video.

Cranleigh is my home town. As a child I would walk to Baynards station and chat to Geoff who grew these amazing flowers, dahlias I think. I remember a large greenhouse on a platform. Geoff did not think it was weird for a girl to adore railways, unlike everyone else. I can just remember travelling to Guildford on the line. The route via Bramley and Wonersh may be reinstated. Did you visit the original Cheshire Cat? It is a drip stone in St Nicholas Church Cranleigh. Lewis Carroll used it as his inspiration. Oliver Cromwell owned a house in the high street, now tea rooms and the village (biggest in England, ) has one of the first cottage hospitals.

There are traces of an old canal beside the line north of Bramley and Wonersh, with at least one overbridge having a span over the railway and another span over the former canal. Another good video and I know this line well as I walked the Downs Link path a few years ago which almost entirely follows the route of the old railway line. It could really really do with being restored as a railway. You may be aware of a large new development "Dunsfold Garden Village" (AKA New Town) which looks to be built with no real new infrastrucutre. So lots more cars heading up the already heavily congested A281 to Guildford. I really think the Council should have insisted on the restoration of this line before giving the development the go ahead. A shame about the double bridge too, it is quite interesting and unique I think (and yes your narrative of the reasons matches what I understood to be the case too - the original gradient was too steep). I took photos of Baynards station. Not sure if there were notices asking you not too then - but it's a public right of way so you are quite permitted too. I visited Baynards and the tunnel many years ago as a result of reading a magazine article. As I peered into the tunnel I could hear the water dripping through the top. Drivers on this line say that because of the water and the gradient in this tunnel it was quite usual to slip to a standstill and not even realise it! I am a bit peeved that the owners of the station having acquired what we would all like then jealously keep it to themselves and even ban photography, this would not be my attitude at all.

I agree completely. I really feel that if you are buying a significant piece of history like this, you can't expect people not to have a keen interest. I fully respect their need for privacy, so why not have a number up suggesting you can visit on certain days or a similar system. A crying shame.

@@pwhitewickTechmoan, hes an English youtuber based in Lancs. Very well known around the world on youtube. I'm unsure why The Walkman should be mentioned - I think it was an underhanded compliment. Techmoan reviews Walkman and discontinued formats - He takes stuff apart and fixes them, hes very good. Anyhow, he makes videos over boring things, which you find yourself actually watching a 20 minute video over, without realising you wanted too. He has these muppets as a 'side' show as sarcasm to the criticism in the comments. Another uk one would be bigclive. More technical than techmoan but similar in some ways. His best ones are the manx beard club reviewing poundland chocolate all the way to taking apart poundland toys.

@@pwhitewick sorry I didnt hear. There was a second line that was cut - but in fiction. Margo protesting against the closure of her line. I think it was in one of the good life episodes - the skit was showing the hypocrisy over locals not wanting the line closed but actually never using it themselves! I've been working in carmarthenshire recently, and near to where I am or was, I understand not only is there a 1000 yard tunnel there but the ventilation shaft even has a staircase to the top - pencader tunnel. Bit unusual. Apparently.

It's a shame they closed this line - in the rush hour there's always a 1-2 mile traffic jam into Guildford. And I believe Cranleigh is one of the biggest places (in terms of population) in England without a railway? Also I think I read it's the biggest village in England? Anyway, I've walked/cycled this and the Shoreham line - both beautiful, especially the latter. That double bridge is deep inside a wood and as rural as can be. Amazing it's just 30 miles from London.
