we have a shop selling items from both the north&south. she says it's getting more difficult to retail them from the north, since the annoying japanese and international laws banned direct tradings between nk this year.. so they have to import items via china these days, which make them cost much more.. the one i'm getting was imported in 2003 and slept in their stocks.. no one wanted because it's 23 stringed. 25 is the trend in the south, while 21 in the north. no one wants the middle.

i finally decided to buy a Kayagum which is Pyungyang-made, Seoul-maintained and Tokyo-sold, long way journeyed one.. 23 stringed. i noticed the northerners and southerners use different woods for their modern Gayageum. they say the northern manufacturers use lower quality woods. they sound milder and subtly vague to my ears. somehow i love it so much.. southern-made ones seem to have clearer and brighter, sounds more like western harp. they're both beautiful. just.. different.

foreign currency works in the communistic societies. if you pay some, you can get one. i'm visiting there next year. if you can buy it from Mongolia, you should try once! i guess Mongolia is where lots of business from china and korea cross. so.. you know it's a Chinese business after all. it's the best way to rely on Korean minorities in china so far, they have anything from nk.

ojutan, i paid about 2,000euros for it this time. but she says if i visit nk myself, i can buy it at much cheaper price. i really wish the situations got better. if the EU opens direct tradings between NK, it'll help the economy of the nk much. also it'll help SK to unite whole the peninsula later. it's only China who earn today. we can't get them without Chinese inter- connecting.. it's the dilemma.

anyway, in May 2010 I will visit Mongolia, and stay there for music studies for a year. I would like to visit NK, too if I could find a way. Some Mongolians have connections to NK, probably they can arrange a visit. It's a 3 day train ride from Mongolia to Pyongyang

Something which seems very interesting is how the Kayagum just barely rests on her lap and it doesn't fall off or barely moves. If it were me, that sucker would have fallen off my lap in note time. Just the position and angle in which it stands and it meets her body, it seems very prone to falling or sliding off. Nice piece!

thnx.... I don't wanna depress anybody, but I found Kayagums and several Gu zhengs made in NK in Ulan Baataar, Mongolia. The quality kayagum was at 140 Euros.... the Gu Zhengs (21 Strings) at 250-350 E. probably not the quality work, but who knows, internet sellers aren't reliable and it is DEFINITIVELY cheaper to fly to Asia and get one on my own. If I could get one in NK I would buy it this would support some people there, but so far getting there in private or for business is impossible
