People who go on those intense weight loss shows arnt taught to build a healthy relationship with diet and exercise. They’re instead completely overworked and starved in order to lose as much weight as quickly as possible for the show. This obviously isn’t sustainable in the long run and also completely ruins their metabolism. It’s pretty horrific the damage they do and that’s why they gain the weight back and then some.

Exactly, people don't recognize that weightloss is a form of bodybuilding. You're undergoing intense changes over a period of time and if you aren't 100% committed towards it you will experience feelings of inadequacy. Like it's insane how the 'fitness and health' media back in the day was just gaslighting innocent people and selling them on a dream of having the perfect body and life only to be left with depression, healthy food and a body that hasn't adjusted to it's rapid change.

Just to add to the statements on Biggest Loser, it's much worse than Pyro mentioned. Well over 90% of them regained the weight, so for people who heard "A majority" and assumed a number around 50%, it's far far worse. When studying an individual season, 15 of the 16 contestants have regained the weight they lost. Moreover, their metabolisms were severely damaged in the process, so they are far less healthy than when they started the show. So any idiot who says "Eat less, do more." is just as qualified as a Biggest Loser trainer.

I had weight loss surgery and it went TERRIBLY. I was a GI bleed just a month later, and that was the first time that surgery almost killed me. That was in 2004, and I have had to have repeated surgery, parts of my dead intestine removed, I had to go on feeding tubes because my body rejected any food for over a year. I went from being absolutely huge to 86lbs at my smallest, at which point I had a life saving surgery to try and correct some of the damage, but a lot of it is permanent. I will have complications for the rest of my life. Now, having said that, I am still in favor of WLS. Things less invasive like a sleeve are very good, and really do help people lose weight. I have watched friends and family do it and be quite successful, so I want to clarify that what happened to me is down to the doctor, not the procedure itself. My specialist surgeon who performed the last major surgery told me what happened to me was extremely rare, so if you are thinking of having surgery to get healthier, I am behind you 100%. Just please, vet the doctor till you know their favorite color and how they take their coffee. You know what I mean? Find out if they are good, because I hate saying it, but there are a lot of lazy, poor doctors out there. But there are plenty of amazing ones too, so make sure you find one of those.

The biggest loser was not actually a good way to stay healthy and lose weight even. The lifestyle they had while on the show was not reproducible after leaving the show. The reasons behind obesity are far more complex than not knowing how to lose weight. Most of the contestants were returning to the same lifestyle that got them overweight to begin with.
