Typically nitration of phenol results in a mixture of 2- and 4-nitrophenol and your target 2,4-dinitrophenol, the exact proportions depending on the reaction temperature and nitration mixture. This is a good opportunity to characterize your product not only by melting point but with some form of spectroscopy.
@johangrundlingh37294 ай бұрын
You're right, direct nitration of phenol will result in a mixture of 2,4 and 2,6-dinitrophenol. If you're after the 2,4 isomer it's probably better to first make 4-nitrosophenol and then go from there.

Some pointers: -Why evaporate the original solution of IPA and not just crystallise the aspirin from it (I understand it was 91% IPA but a little extra degradation would have been worth the risk). -Could have easily also purified the salicylic acid by doing a solvent extraction (leaving water soluble impurities in the Aq layer) than easily re extracting into a basic water solution (removing organic impurities) and re precipitating via acidification of the aq solution. - As a safety tip you should have quenched the nitrating mixture with base before distilling off the ethanol (the base was eventually still added for purification)

Unpopular opinion: leaded paint shouldn't have been banned for indoor use, just regulated. The pigments would never fade as the compounds were simple and stable. Paint chips are only a serious problem in locations where the paint is subject to wear and tear from weather, sunlight, etc. -- places like wooden windows. Its weight loss properties were discovered during WWI when workers in plants producing explosives for the war effort were found to be losing weight despite eating normally. DNP could be reacted with oxalyl chloride to make dinitrophenol oxalate (DNPO) which is a replacement for TCPO chemiluminescent chemical if you don't want to make 2,4,6-trichlorophenol
@seananon48934 ай бұрын
Ah, yes! Dinitrophenol oxalate is indeed a viable alternative to 2,4,6-trichlorophenol in chemiluminescent reactions. The reaction with oxalyl chloride is quite straightforward. Here's a quick outline of the process: Begin by carefully preparing a solution of Dinitrophenol (DNP) in an appropriate solvent, such as ethanol or acetone. Make sure you're wearing protective gear, as DNP can be quite reactive and potentially hazardous. Slowly add the oxalyl chloride to the DNP solution while stirring continuously. The reaction may be exothermic, so it's important to keep an eye on the temperature. As the reaction progresses, you'll notice the formation of a white precipitate. This is the dinitrophenol oxalate, or DNPO. Once the reaction is complete, filter the mixture to separate the DNPO from any unreacted materials. Wash the DNPO with cold solvent to remove any residual reagents, and then allow it to dry completely.
