Hey JG why do we say that 8x-1 is for sure the hypotenuse? Wouldn't that information have to be given to you in the problem because the hypotenuse would be dependent on the value of x. If x=1 for example then (8x-1=7), (5x=5), and (4x+5=9) which would make 4x+5 our hypotenuse.

@@Hgj-hb9bd To be fair if x=1 then the equations are not true. I'm sure you could determine the real hypotenuse through trial and error if you had to. Although it would be nice to avoid going through all the possibilities one by one.

There's no indication in the problem that the hypotenuse MUST be 8x-3, if the hypotenuse is 4x-5, there is a real solution of (44+4sqrt(194))/73 = x, and x>8/9 from the three sides given to obey the Triangle Inequality Theorem.

I'm in 10th grade and I may be wrong, but this problem has only variable, which is X. Since X is present on all 3 sides of the triangle, we can assume a number for that variable, let's say 1. After substituing the X for 1, and doing some calculations, you will come to the conclusion that 8x - 3 is indeed the longest side of the triangle, thus being hypotenus of the correspondent triangle.
