I haven’t fly-fished for around 50 years, and can remember when we had to painfully tie our own tapered leaders... Using “blood” knots to connect progressively-smaller diameter mono (there were suggested weights and lengths) down to your final diameter. The introduction of factory-made tapered leaders was a godsend. At my age (73), I find SEEING the fine tippet and tiny hook loops difficult enough... Looks like these clips are a must-buy.

Here in Brazil it's pretty standard to use clips when baitcasting and/or Fly Fishing. Most commonly the lock snaps. It just saves a lot of time, saves your leader and you'll be able to walk around carrying only a small box of flies/lures and a single fishing rod.

Those clips are great for streamers. Tying a loop knot when changing streamers is total pain in the neck. When I started fly fishing (on a budget) I couldn’t afford tapered leaders so at the time most of us made our own by knotting together 30 lb, 15 lb 10lb and 6lb. for instance. Blood knots used are small and hold well. Best way I know of on the cheap. That said you can get tapered leaders these days that are pretty inexpensive.

Still better to tie your own but make sure you are focusing on stiffness and diameter and not the lb test.

When I travel to Ontario to fish for trophy smallmouth, there is always the chance my flies may get slammed and stolen by a passing northern pike, so I often use bite wire. To avoid having to constantly re-tie the wire, I set up the wire with a loop at the end with a small cross-lock snap. I used fly snaps the first year and found that the heavy leaders and large fish were pretty rough on them. Most of them ended up at least deformed, if not almost straightened. The cross-locks bore the strain much better.

I'm very new to fly fishing. Definitely use your channel as my main teacher. The fly clips are sort of equivalent to the snap swivels for easy change out on spinner lures on spin reels. They save a ton of time but I find the snap swivels really mess with the presentation of the spinner so don't use them. I'm wondering if the fly clip also can mess with or alter the presentation of the fly when you do stripping? I love the time saver but curious if the fly clips hinders the fly presentation. Tying your own leaders opens up the possibility for customization! To help me see where my cast is going, I like to tie in a yellow mid section (Stren’s Hi Vis Gold). It also helps me detect bites. I imagine you could also use Zebco’s Cajun Red for visibility in different lighting conditions. Some species might be scared away by bright colors, but I suspect that panfish like bluegills and crappie might even be attracted to some colors of line.

How do they work for dries? I am thinking a metal clip may weigh down the fly...

So I'm guessing this clip is not for trout. Rocky Mountain national park trout, or will they work? Picky trout so wondering if the clip will scare them away?
@Madriveroutfitters5 жыл бұрын
Not usually recommended/needed for trout fishing but you can certainly try if you like.

Just wondering if the additional weight affects the balance/action of the fly?

Would it make your fly much heavier and need heavier tippet? And what about leader shy fish would they not see it?

How small of a fly size would you suggest these are limited to. I've been thinking about these for a while but I've been torn on how small of a fly I could go down to before these would be a hindrance on the fly effectiveness. I'm thinking I could still have an effective fly to maybe down to a size 14 or so, but on a midge it probably wouldn't be a good idea. Thoughts?

I use these and they make changing flies so much easier . Do you think they may put fish off ?
@Madriveroutfitters4 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure he would not make a video if he thought that. Feel free to contact him at the shop though if you need further clarification.

Can we use the same technique for changing dry flies? my assumption is the clips will add more weight to the fly and could possibly sink it a little bit. Am I wrong?
@Madriveroutfitters4 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure he addresses that here in the video but he's not a fan for dry flies. You stated it exactly why.

@Madriveroutfitters3 жыл бұрын
Can be used for virtually any fly that you want.

I always enjoy your videos. I don't think that you want to use those clips when dry fly fishing for trout.

Can these clippers be used on a dry fly, or is there a great chance for the clippers to sink the fly?
