You should create a playlist with these videos as these are EXCEPTIONALLY HELPFUL. Question:: Do you use Electronic shutter at all. Do you use it for BIF where higher shutter count helps. Does the choice different (a9 vs a7Riv), What about EFCS - is that turned on or off? I saw your settings video but wanted to make these key questions black & white

I can't wait until you get your hands on the R5. It would be fantastic if you could get hold of the RF 100-500mm from B&H too which would make a very interesting comparison with the A7R IV and the FE 200-600mm. From what I've seen so far, at least on the surface, their animal eye tracking seems to be legit and in fact might have already surpassed Sony as they can now manage animal eye tracking even on birds. The question is, is it just on the overlay? The proof is always in the pudding, the only way to know for sure is to compare shots on the computer. Your review would be critical for me as it pertains to my next upgrade. A7R IV vs R5 and right now I am leaning towards the Sony based on image quality of what I've seen to date plus of course the infamous Canon overheating issue. Getting the popcorn out for this one!! LOL.

I think I can safely say many of us love your wildlife adventures complete with the stories and narration. Understandably those videos take more time to produce and I'd take a guess that sitting in front of a video editor isn't your favorite activity. Have you ever considered partnering with someone that loves video production and making something like that a wildlife learning weekly series? Of course you would be the personality and narration but having someone lift some of the burden of being a one man show doing everything could afford perhaps more time doing the parts you love with someone else doing something they also enjoy equally. Anyways, just a thought, I've always enjoyed the educational aspect of your channel as much as the photography part. Sincerely, Rob Wasilewski

OK so now you got another Nikon guy going to dive into Sony. You said your first experience with a 9 and a 100 to 400 mm lens, was that an f4 to 5.6 or ? And I’ve got a ton of money invested into my Nikon G8 50 my D 500 my lenses that range from 14 mm to 500 mm PF prime I’ve got the 200 to 500mm the 70 to 200mm 2.8 and I recently moved to Florida and I’m just having a blast shooting the birds. Such an amazing variety. I’ve been heading that direction with my photography for quite some time. So for a guy who is kind of on a budget and wants to start out learning new tricks, would you suggest buying just the A 9 and the 100 to 400 to start with?

Mark, thanks for another great Q & A video. I Used your set-up video for the A9 when I got my A9ii; thanks for that; my question is what is the best way to recenter the focus for both the zoom focus button (AF-On) and the flexible spot tracking focus button (AEL). I have been refocusing the first (AF-ON) by touching the screen at the center, but the second (AEL) seems to always get lost/stuck off in a corner ;-).

I always enjoy hearing your perspective on gear and techniques. Always honest. Have you ever looked at the combination of the Sony a6600 with the E4.5-6.3/70-350 G OSS lens for birds and wildlife? I am NOT suggesting it is as good as the a7RIV/a9 FF long telephoto and telephoto zoom lenses that I use and love. However, my wife, who just doesn't want to deal with the size and weight of the FF options, loves it and gets some pretty darn good results. I'd suggest that for anyone who doesn't want to deal with the size, weight, and expense of the FF combos, it could be a good choice. If you ever have the time and your friends at B&H will loan you the setup, your review would be appreciated.

Mark please make a video which shows how far you are away from the subject, what the raw image looks like, how big the subject is in the frame and how much your crop. I only ever get anything worth keeping if I am close to the subject. Is that just how it is or should I get a better lens? I shoot Canon 7D mk ii with Canon 100-400is mk ii. I wonder if I should switch to Sony A9 or A7R iv with 200-600 lens, can't really afford 600 F4, what do you think?. Thanks David.

I am thinking about getting an A1 due to the Bird Eye Autofocus, however the cost is frightening. Will I get good BIF shots with the A9ii despite not having BEAF? Similarly, if a static bird is amongst branches, the A1 BEAF must really help avoid locking onto a twig/branch but would the A9ii cope just as well? I would prefer the A9ii due to budget but would love to have your advice.

Hello Mark, I loved this video. I have some questions, you mentioned that "With good light" we should go with 7r IV, what about during the afternoon? Take into account that I can only afford a lens such as the 200-600 or the 100-400 (Living in Uruguay makes it very hard to buy any expensive lens) On the other hand, does the Canvas and Metal printing service, send the print to your address? Or do you have to pick it up? I am planning to offer my photos on my web, but I am still looking for a company that may give USA customers the chance to get those photos (and not me sending them up there) Hope my english was not so bad! LOL. Best wishes for a lovely sunday, Daniela.

At the same time i tried the sharpen AI and the results were not worth the processing for me, gigapixel pretty much did the job i was expecting/hoping for from sharpen.

I have just discovered your channel recently and I have to confess that I love your style. Instead of a lot of b-roll around a single epic shot, your are telling the story with your photos. When you told us that you pick up the A9 with the 200-600 only for video, I started to look into your gear history. Your videos start with a D500 and a 150-600 lens and culminate in an a7R4 and a 600mm prime. I suppose that for IQ you would probably recommend a prime with a high resolution sensor (allowing you to crop in). Zooms tend to be more portable and versatile (for shorter focal lenghts). Is the IQ of theses zooms sufficient for a high resolution sensor ? I have seen that you have used the D850 with the 200-500.

Hi Mark, thanks for another great video full of insights. Your work not only inspires but also improves the skills of many such as myself. I have a question. I own both a Nikon D500 and a D850 and I usually pair either with a Nikon 200-500mm lens for birding. While that lens is more than a bang for the buck, as you'd know, it suffers in low light and hunts for focus even in reasonable lighting conditions at times, which has made me think of upgrading my lens. And a 500mm f4 or a 600mm f4 are out of my budget. I have been seriously thinking of the Nikon 300mm f2.8. Do you think if I'd be able to shoot birds (even small) both stationary and in action by pairing the 300mm lens with the D500 which makes it an effective 450mm lens at f2.8 and if can add a TC 1.4 to that combo getting an effective focal length of 630mm at f4? Would there be any degradation of image quality, performance in low light and auto focus speeds? Also, how will it be to use the 300mm lens on the d850 in the dx crop mode and using the TC 1.4. Which of these two combos would be better? I know it's a lengthy question but would appreciate your answer. Thanks much. Can't wait for your next video already 😃.
@dimitristsagdis7340
@dimitristsagdis7340 4 жыл бұрын
I have the Canon equivalent combo you propose and I find reach is an issue. Most of the time I find that I have to use the 2x instead of the 1.4x and IQ degrades noticeably and AF speed takes a hit (almost prohibiting BIF). The 1.4x work fine both good AF speed and almost no noticeable IQ loss; so if 1.4x is close enough for you go for it.
@tc6912
@tc6912 4 жыл бұрын
I went through the same thought process and settled on the 500mmPF on D500. Decent reach, reasonable price point, good image quality, light weight for the reach, not great with lower light.

Yet another excellent Q&A Mark! Question: What type of reasonably priced camera set up would you recommend for a novice that is just getting started with photography? Thanks & keep up the great work that you do............. 👍👍📷📷📷📷👍👍
@tc6912
@tc6912 4 жыл бұрын
That would depend on what type of photography you want to prioritize. I assume wild life, because you are here. I love my D500. Some may consider it old tech now that the mirrorless cameras are coming up to speed, but for the price point, I don't think you can beat it. If you can handle the weight, the 200-500 zoom lense is an excellent choice. If you want to spend a little more, the 500PF is also excellent. I have had good luck with refurbished equipment when trying to save some money. IMHO.

Not what I've heard. Yes it will find the eye but according to Tony Northrup its still imprecise...slightly back focused or focused on birds body instead. Again its all hype right now. One thing I can confirm...Sony A9 seems to find birds eyes pretty much most of the time without much trouble

@@njrtech You seem to be spot on and off. According to Tony, all mirrorless cameras, including the new Sony A9, are equally poor at eye focus for birds unless they are still. This has been my experience with Sony, also. Luckily, most birds in flight are shot at a significant distance so that depth of field is wide enough to capture adjacent head components with equal sharpness. I agree that it is all hype! I have been shooting BIF for 40 years and auto eye focus is the last thing I ever needed. Fast, accurate and sustained subject tracking is another story, something both the A9 and R5 do relatively well. As an aside, Tony reports the R5 heats up even while taking stills. Guess I will stick with my A9 II since I shot my last video footage when Kennedy was president.

@@Libinkttm I would not bet your house on a Lehmann's Canon commercial showing him shooting large slow moving birds. His game changer statement is almost laughable. Mark Smith produces amazing results with the Sony A9 with the same bird population, a feat all of us can accomplish.

Hi, now r5 is here and what z your thoughts about a7r4? I’m debating b/w a7r4 vs r5. The only thing I don’t like about a7r4 is the lack of touch screen, articulated screen and lack of multiple raw formats, which are all in r5 with I believe almost close to Sony in eye tracking too. But glasses for r5 ridiculously prized. Being a7s3 announced with all these features, I believe it is best in investing in a7r4 for future proof. What is your thoughts b/w these cameras? I don’t care about video features at all? I was a nikon shooter, and I tried Z camera, didn't like much. So I'm planning to jump into sony or canon; I don't have glasses for either of these brands. Will there any chance for sony a7r4 t get these updated features of touch screen, updated menu and multi raw formats by a firmware update? Any thoughts on these decision making would be really helpful and really appreciate it. Really I would like to see a comparison b/w a7r4 vs R5 in regards of auto focus, eye tracking, image quality, dynamic range in still photography. Thanks in advance.

Before you choose the R5, wait for tests of EVF lag. Tony and Chelsea already tested the R5 and the EVF lag was not good at all. Not ideal for tracking birds or fast action. Don't buy into the hype until credible people test it or better test yourself

for animal , birds photography , Canon R5 is by far the best camera , its got the best animal eye autofocus and it works great with ef lenses as good as ef mount camera ..so no worry about the lenses . Robert Marc Lehmann, national geography photographer ...Just watch this guy , he is an amazing bird /animal photographer , he showes how easily Canon R5 tracks birds , how great the eye autofocus and the image quality is mind blowing ..

I want to switch to mirrorless, but I keep hearing some reviewers say that there is a small lag in the EVF that makes tracking BIF more difficult. Is that true from your experience?
@TechnoBabble
@TechnoBabble 4 жыл бұрын
Depends entirely on your camera system. Sony's newest cameras (a6100, a6400, a6600, a7r IV, a9 II) have very little lag in the EVF. I recent switched to Canon APS-C (M6 Mark II, which was basically their best mirrorless before the R5 and R6 were released) and it has significantly more lag than the Sony. Unfortunate, but I can mostly work around it.

Spray cans of compressed air from Costco are great for cleaning.

Be very careful though. You do not want to direct any compressed air towards the sensor.

Mark I think its important to mention that the A7RIV has serious backfocus issues with the 200600G. If one can only afford a zoom such as 200600G, then A9 should be an obvious choice. If you can afford a 600F4 GM, obviously that changes your options. Please lookup the complaints mounting on Fred Miranda forum regarding Sony A7RIV with 200600G. Might explain why you didn't like that lense on this body. There is some compatability issue for certain. On the A9/ii the 200600G is fire. Take care

Mark...have much respect for you and your work. My comment above it based on my own experience (along with several photographers who own this combo A7RIV, 200600G and a few with 600F4) . They also feel this body requires supreme optics to achieve its potential due to pixel density and sensor readout speed. Take care

I’m not sure. I imagine they ship worldwide but not sure how cost effective the shipping would be. I would send them a message and ask.
