Agreed, I manage a hotel and the irate people are VERY RARE and even if I encounter one, after just a couple exchanges I calm them down as they start to realize I'm one of the coolest dudes that ever lived. It's all about how you interact with people and your attitude in this industry and attitude towards life in general. Realize that other people have to deal with their own issues and sometimes far worse than you, and you become a shining light to many.

Hi Lucy, Your videos have been so helpful to me! I'm on my 3rd interview for an officer position as a training specialist with a well known cruise line and knowing what I'm getting myself into as well as hearing your point of view has really prepared me. If I'm successful and receive an offer I will certainly NOT be the youngest person onboard but knowing the job from a younger person's point of view will be a valuable asset as a crew trainer. Thank you for another informative video. I am now in my seventies and am a quantity surveyor, so I will never be working as crew on a ship. However, my wife and I have done some cruises, the most recent being a river cruise in Europe last month. We have always been very mindful of how hard members of the crew work…and also just how the structured the levels of management are. We have enjoyed each cruise immensely and wish to thank cruise crews everywhere for their efforts to make cruising a great experience. Your efforts are appreciated. Headsup: you can also work on river cruises in Europe, including if you are from "non - western" countries of Europe, without a need for special visas, meaning if you are from eastern European countries such as Romania, there's cruises on the Danube...

My wife and I are currently on Valiant Lady and have watched a lot of your videos to help us prepare for the cruise. I will say that your comment regarding the onboard coffee shop inspired us to bring instant coffee to offer to crew members as gifts and it seems to be a hit. Hopefully we will get the chance to see you before we disembark, but I imagine if you were onboard with us, we would have seen you already. Cheers! Also 10/10 would recommend Virgin Voyages.

I bet that it would have been fun to do if it existed when i was in my twenties. Because it was not a thing, I went into the marines and did end up cruising to exotic ports of call all the same but a little different. Your videos are great, easy to listen to.

That’s so true about different accents. English is my first language and French is my second. I thought I was totally fluent in French until I went to Club Med and discovered that I couldn’t understand half of what the people from French-speaking Africa were saying. So that was a whole process I had to work on.

Some cruise lines do offer shorter contracts, the cruise line I work for offer seasonal contracts people join in busier seasons for very short periods of time so it doesn’t always have to be a career move especially for cruises with a youth club you don’t have to work many hours depending on the ship and management

Hi Lucy, I just found one of your videos (9 hr cancellation😫) and then binge watched 6 videos. Love, love, love. I am a long time cruiser and I have always enjoyed getting to know the staff all around the ship as I tend to take longer cruises. I have a question I’d like to ask…I always tip my cabin steward the standard and add additional. I have a long cruise coming up in September but this time I thought I’d bring a gift for my steward as the “extra” thank you. Q.11 Everyone working aboard ship is very good at whatever it is they do. They are all professionals that have come highly recommended, or surpassed the competition to be there in the 1st place. There are no passengers on ships 😁. Lucy would be too modest to say that, of course😁.

On one of my cruises before the covid time I saw a hearing impaired person in the old time muster drill that was trying to be recognized….I know sign language and realized they were trying to speak out but weren’t being seen…I was rudely told to shut up because it was the muster drill …I was just trying to help the deaf person.

Question Lucy, Do shop workers and "concierge" workers like "front desk" workers, do any of those 3 get single rooms for privacy? I'm very careful and disciplined with my spending, so I would rather work the hours like you do, and have some free time in the evenings. I would still be able to save money due to my frugalness lol However, I am always willing to work overtime if they need me so I can make more money. I think there some mistakes regarding applying jobs, I'm from India and i apply through the company website.. Not necessarily you need to go to agent, it's up to you if you want your work done by agent you can apply from agency and if you'd like to do by yourself then you can apply from the company website. It's nothing related to where youre from I guess if I'm not mistaken..

Do you find it strange that Virgin never really seems to push shopping compared to other cruise lines where it's constant promotions and selling? Virgin shops almost seem to exist just for browsing between shows and eating. I can't imagine the staff earn much commission there

I agree. It's a very different approach but that was actually their goal. They didn't want you to feel any pressure. I would say we ear just as much if not more comission because it's a more pleasant environment to buy in.

Idk why but honestly.. for a non-english speaker at least, understanding people that are not from english speaking countries are often much more easier rather than interesting accents that aren't your regular American, Canadian, typical British ones that are a lot harder - Kiwi, ozzy, irish or scottish for example.

I think you're technically not supposed to, but on Royal Caribbean I've hand carried a box of cokes on board with me, and had no problems. I do also buy the soft drink package though, so that might make a difference too (they're not losing any money on me). I bring the cans because it's more convenient to keep them in my room than to run to the other end of the ship to constantly refill my cup in the freestyle machine. They will confiscate alcohol if they find it though. I've also packed boxes of cokes in my checked luggage, but have had the cans break open - the luggage is handled very roughly.

you could do an interview without their name or showing their face anonymously and still get all of the juicy bits like a podcast, given they're anon you'll likely get more details and more views
