Unless they're living together. Besides that, if the justification is avoiding adultery or sexual pleasure, I don't understand why it should always avoided as sinful. That might seem to be creepy for non-orthodox Muslims and Jews. It's like someone is a pervert and is overexcited for shaking an hand. It might a cultural thing. Shaking an hand and putting an hand on the top of the other hand have different meanings in the western countries. I don't think it's a big deal in some countries if a Muslim woman wearing an hijab shakes a man hand. All you 'muslims' in the comments need to chill. Nobody is compromising the religion and you are free to disagree with his opinion. It's very very rare (in a professional setting) that a handshake will turn into a pat on the shoulder, to a rub on the upper back and then a hug. are you kidding me? Unless you are really inviting and flirty....nobody is going to do that; they might lose their jobs over it. Most muslim women or men won't get this kind of attention simply because they are very reserved (practicing muslims) and guard themselves. But a handshake, like he said, in a context of a JOB INTERVIEW. i am also of the opinion, that it can be permissible. He is not saying that all handshakes are fine, he is talking about context of a JOB INTERVIEW and other such 'circumstances'. For those who don't know, Shabir Ally is from Toronto, and I am from here as well. Job market here is already tough, and if you have to feed your family, are you really going to let go of potential jobs, because you don't want to shake hands? Most employers would see this as disrespect, even though you may state religious reasons....and they would hesitate to hire you. Yes...God provides sustenance, not the employer, but if you go THAT DEEP into this kind of thinking, you will isolate yourself from literally everything. For example, interest, is involved in every single company, there is almost no avoiding it. And most companies indirectly will be involved in haram activities or investments or other endeavors. Are you going to not work for these companies? Well, good luck finding a job then. Yes we should know our religion and know the difference between right and wrong, but it's 2017, and things have gotten very complicated, and muslims have to live practical lives too, otherwise we will be left behind. Yes, some of you may have rich parents or have money to wait for a job to come along, while avoiding handshakes. But many of us don't, and many people are living pay cheque to pay cheque, with families depending on them. Try to understand and weight the benefits and cons. Is feeding your family, helping your parents, paying your debts , etc etc (which are all good deeds), better than being unemployed for months and months and not finding a job because you refuse to shake hands, etc? Yes that's an exaggeration, but unless you are working minimum wage jobs, in factories or retail..or in some niche academic market, a handshake will go a long way. I am ashamed of the comments below me

I actually find from my experience that it's better to avoid shaking hands from the beggining. Most employers respect your values and understand that people have different ways in different cultures. Also it will avoid unwanted touching such as hugging or a pat on the back as they know they can't shake your hands. I strongly reccomend you to do it from the beggining because I failed to do so as I didn't want to be rude but now every time they want to shake my hands and it's very uncomfortable. On the plus side it's better to keep your germs to yourself anyways.

Aslamolikum. I admire Dr Shabbir and he is one of my inspirations with regards to comparative religion etc. However I strongly disgaree with respect with Dr Shabbirs position in relation to ahadith. With this Hadith on touching woman it doesnt say that the punsihment is being stabbed with iron needle rather the hadith says “For one of you to be stabbed in the head with an iron needle is better for him than that he should touch a woman who is not permissible for him.”" It wouldbe better" thats the phrase used in order to tell us regarding the gravity of the sin and not the punsihment. Every individual situation is different. Also there are hadiths that show umar ibn al khattab shaking hands with believing women. Lastly even sheikhs like yassir qadhi say that in certain situations, shaking hands can be fine and necessary.

@@m.emaads.7919 Bismillah. To begin, the whole idea of shaking hands with opposite gender in Islam is something that should be avoided as much as possible. Shiekh Yasir qhadi says that it is not necessarily sinful but rather Makrooh(disliked). And he goes on to say that most of the scholars say that it is haram even in situations like a job interview it should not happen. But again we hear of circumstances were the sahaba would shake hands with elderly believing women and what not. But the whole idea is that it is not fine and physical contact should be avoided as much as possible.

Dr Shabir Ally has made a fatal mistake in his argument. 1. That shaking a woman’s or mans hand by an unrelated person is a minor event. 2. That the hadith’s is prescribing a punishment. Firstly i reject his position if it being minor, touching a woman however trivial actually has a fundamental effect of the relationship dynamic. It breaksdown a psychological barrier which then leave further touching a clear possibility. Where do you draw the line? his distinction is arbitrary. 2nd The hadith is not prescribing s punishment but conveying the severity of the action in Allahs eye via analogy. Dr Ally appears to give the current social narrative a free pass as to what is good and bad.

I am not able to digest such statements from Dr. shabbir. he was one of my heroes but not anymore. it's hurting me, I want a reply from him, why does he have to do such things, endorse something which goes against the very ethos of Islam. although he might disagree with the gravity of the punishment prescribed for touching non mahram, how can he ever prescribe handshaking wholesale? although I have admired and liked his line of reasoning in other things, I'm not able to show many of his video fatwas just because her daughter sits with heavy make up which will put off potential Muslim viewers who will clearly point out the verse regarding display of adornments. it's common sense that when there is strict prohibition on even display of adornments, how can a woman ever warm the hands of a non mahram for any damn reason? what if the employer makes it the routine and wants to shake hands daily as a form of greeting? is that ok? if that's OK then what if they begin to warm up to the idea of shaking more than warm hands? how many times is shaking hands acceptable quranically? by going down this route you have opened a Pandora's box which poses never ending questions. i sincerely expected you to say that the opportunity can be utilised to respectfully deny and present the Islamic viewpoint. what most employers want is talent and not handshaking. job prospects do not hinge around whether one shakes hands or not. pls br. shabbir please for God sake take back this statement or delete this video. this video is surely going to bring you irreparable disrepute I'm saying this as your one time biggest fan.

Ok, it's not mentioned SPECIFICALLY that cigarettes, cigars and hookah are haram. But it does say in the Quran that don't harm yourself in your own hands. And stuff like that harms you. So, since it's not specifically said anywhere that they're haram, I don't wanna say something that I'm not sure about. But it's going more to the bad side. Better not get into that stuff, if you are already into it, please try your best to leave it. It's for your own good. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Shaking hands has everything to do with job qualifications and it is the first impression that matters most. If you don't shake hands firmly, smile, maintain eye contact...etc, then you might as well just turn around and head back out the door.

I think many non Muslims are extremely appreciative of being explained to about not shaking hands. Its actually an icebreaker for most part and introduces good discourse plus there are many non Muslims who dont like physical contact and will not try to shake your hand to save embarrassment. Who are we to apply logic when it comes to the reward system of allah, that hadith is authentic then that means thats it we hear and we obey, Allah says in quran in 33:36 that its not for a believing man or a woman to have an option in matters in which allah and his messenger have judged upon...Wallahi my brothers and sisters we are no one to introduce any change, add or subtract anything from islam, this religion is allah's religion, we are but just its followers.
