One simple change I'm laying- out in our next league is that any unit that takes twice as many hits as there are models in the the unit takes 2 pins. Sounds cheesy, but if you consider a 10 man veteran rifle unit with an LMG (so 12 - 14 shots total) will be about 150pts. Take that against 3 units of 5 riflemen I'd take the 3 units every day of the week. You'd out-pin the vet unit always. And if they shoot at you they're dumping a huge unit against a piddling little one. But with to-hit modifiers that vet unit inflicting a number of hits equal to or more than the unit size is still not that easy, but it's possible and helps to balance up the pins that can be dished out. We also have it that, provided a unit can pass a Command test it can split fire with the LMG. We only do that in small friendly games, that's getting to be a bit too rules-rewrite territory but again evens up death star units. We also have LMGs and MMGs causing D2 or D3 pins respectively so agains evens out the LMGs and points. I hope they address this in 3rd ed

We are also doing a 10% discount on all vehicles that are more than 100 points (20% for the Germans) so that helps to balance out the medium and heavy tanks being overpriced

Oh, and for single shot weapons (like tank cannons and PaKs etc) if they don't move and the target hasn't moved then a +1 to hit is applied. This evens up paying a daft amount of points for weapons that will miss half the time. This rule is for very friendly games against close friends

I've never seen a turn based game where singular big units were even equal to multiple weaker units without giving them the ability to act multiple time or the numbers scaling so absurdly that the weaker but cheaper units can't actually touch the more expensive ones. One of the first things an optimizer learns, regardless of system, is that action economy is always king.

I see now the origins of your fascination with Ghurkas and Dakka Stuarts. I would argue that a Bolt Action deathstar is a composite of multiple units not a single unit.

Just to point out our local clubs tournament the top winner had a Panther in his army so it can work. I got into a major bog down as he was my first competitor and in the infamous double envelopment engagement. And so I left the middle wide open and so put both flanks as a major push to the edge. I got 4 of my 10 units off but my poor Pazer Zestorer Truppen, Sturmpioniers and SD Kfz 251 Drilling met an end to said Panther as it blocked my right flank push and I just couldn't go up to it and ignore it. I was trying a side shot with the Drilling and so missed and failed to pen said side armor, if I had a heavy auto cannon I would have. His platoon was pretty much 4, 6-8 man squads of vet SS fanatics a Panther, medium mortar and Panzerschrek team. Leaving the middle open allowed him to just put all his infantry in there and run right up the middle with just my medium mortar offering target practice LOL.
