"Since my reversion to Islam, I have been bombarded with, 'Do this, it is Sunnah,' or, 'This is the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).' Following the Prophet is the right way to conduct one's life as a Muslim. The problem is that this often seems to have gone beyond respect, but instead has become a form of worship. An analogy is someone who idolizes a basketball star and wants to emulate that person in all they do. This goes beyond respect and enters the area of worship. I submit that in my experience there are many Muslims doing the same thing in blindly emulating the Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him blindly." Dr. Shabir Ally & Dr. Safiyyah Ally respond to this viewer's question.

From one 1st gen Muslim to another: what helped me the most was to realize that to follow the example of the Prophet is to seek to perfect our manners in all things we do. Anything defined as "sunnah" is something that God will reward you if you do it, but there's no harm if you don't. The Prophet Muhammad (saw) knew where all these sunnah actions could be found! So following him is a good idea. But getting the basics first and foremost is the foundation for all of us. We follow him bc he taught us how to worship Allah swt.

Mohammad could have been the best human being for worshipping Allah the pagan God of the Kaabah. But not the true God of Abraham. Mind you at one time he got it right. In the early day Mohammad commanded all muslims to pray facing Jerusalem - the place where the true God of Abraham was worshiped. But then Satan entered his soul and he redirected his followers to pray towards the pagan Kaabah once again.

Technically, according to the Quran, there is no prophet or messenger who is the best at worshipping God or who has the best lifestyle. They're all equally important. Chapter 46, Verse 9 of the Quran says "I am not different from other messengers. I have no idea what will happen to me or to you. I only follow what is revealed to me. I am no more than a profound warner." I think the point is basically that a believer is supposed to worship in accordance with what was revealed to him about how to do so, but that in a truly monotheistic religion, no human being is perfect, so it doesn't mean that you need to follow everything they did. For instance, if I say to obey your teacher, that doesn't mean that you need to have their same haircut, wear the same clothes as them, etc. You can, but you don't have to. All it means is that you are supposed to follow the rules within their classroom and do the classwork in accordance with how they say to do it.

You know I understand that you see it that way. However there is really a great danger in thinking that way. Point is that if you imitate the prophet then you are imitating him while following someone is something else. But now the dangerous part. There are ''hadiths'' that are referenced to the prophet while this contradicts the Quran or Allah-u teala one on one. By giving preference to the hadith over what Allah-u teala has said you are putting someone else's authority above that of Allah-u teala and that still amounts to hidden shirk. This is what the Prophet has warned about. We know that the Prophet tried to live in accordance with the Qur'an. Try to live in accordance with the Quran the sunnah is also in there. Before I make it too long small example. Please read 25/43. In there it says ''have you seen the one who has taken his desire as his god?'' Since you and I have never seen anyone in our lives who has worshipped his ego means that Shirk is more than just worshipping another object. The authority of nothing or no one should exceed that of God.

It is a commonly well acknowledged fact that too much of anything can be bad. Moderation is Key. Dr. Shabir has done well providing an articulate and detailed overview of the question asked. Again this brings us back to problematic obsession with Hadiths. We muslims, we love and adore the Prophet (on whom be peace) but we must always maintain a distinctive and critical approach on the extent as to which we "follow" the Prophet. Yes! It's that important! The Sunnah is great, but how high and how low must we apply it and how reasonably can we do so? These questions should and must always be on our minds as reminders. Jazakallahu Khairan!

The real problems are as follows: 1. The focus of Muslims has completely shifted from Allah to the prophet, that too based on dubious human-compiled narrations. 2. In the name of sunnah Muslims have started following hadith which are simply hearsays. These "authentic" hadiths contain filth of the highest degree, are blasphemous, illogical, contradictory to Quran, and insulting to the prophets and their wives. 3. The hadith gives tons of divine laws (dietary prohibitions, prohibition of wearing silk) which are in addition to what is given in the Quran. This is nothing but associating partners with Allah when it comes to taking divine laws. Some laws are taken from Allah and others are taken on the authority of mullahs. 4. There was never a way for famous "imams", and "scholars" 10 years back nor do have any means now to evaluate the character of people who lived much before these hadith "authenticators" were even born. This whole "science of hadith" was an unprecedented character assassination of people whom the "authenticators" had never met. Remember that according to the Quran, even the prophet was not aware of the hypocrites among the Arabs around him. People like Brother Shabbir are doing a great job but they should be bolder in exposing these fabrications and saving reverts from getting confused.

Qur'an tells us, there are many form of associating Allah, one of them is following a human guidance regarding the divine knowledge, rather than following Allah's Divine guidance in engaging the Divine scripture. Simply put, those who follow human guidance to get a divine guidance is called Shirk. Because only Allah has the authority regarding the divine guidance. Any human who try to bypass Allah authority in transmitting divine guidance, they are all doing shirk. Human beings don't have the capability in carrying divine guidance, only Allah has that capability and also the Qur'an as the medium. And when you are talking about a Nabiiy and A Rasool? Werent they human too? Yes they are, but where in the Qur'an, that those Nabiiy and Rasool, Admit that they own the guidance? Never. They always pointing out directly to Allah Subhanahu wa Taala as the only source of divine guidance. Therefore, any source of guidance regarding the divine guidance from any human beings are all called shirk ( without evidence directly from Allah using the Qur'an )

I think there is a danger with those that wish to emulate the Prophet to that extent, that in the future it will become the same as the Christians. They worship Jesus rather than God. So a very devout muslim goes to Dubhai for the first time in his life. He hails a taxi. He gets in the taxi and sets off. The radio is on, playing songs. He tells the taxi driver to turn the radio off because it is haraam. So the taxi driver turns it off. The passenger says, brother, you are Muslim, why dont you have a beard? Taxi driver says " my wife doesnt like me with a beard." Passenger says it is sunnah, you must have a beard! They carry on the journey. The taxi driver then lights up a cigarette, The passenger says " Brother, put it out, it is haraam." At this, the taxi driver got annoyed, he stopped the taxi and said " Kindly get out and go find a camel to take you on the rest of your journey!!

Many Muslims take what the prophet did out of his own habit or culture unconsciously & call it "sunnah". Just because he used a stick to brush his teeth 1500 years ago doesn't mean doing it today is "sunnah". Just because he was right handed doesn't mean you need to force yourself to become right handed if you are left. He lived in an Arab place, dressed like one & spoke like one. Now you have Muslims from totally different part of the world & culture emulating Arab lifestyle from 1500 years ago & calling it "sunnah". In some cases it's almost like a cult granted that you understand how human psychology can work when it comes to idolize over what they view as a leader. Some go as far as thinking it's a sin to wear pants at or below your ankles. Maybe the reason was because the arabs 1500 years ago didn't want sand/mud on their clothes & the lesson from that is just to practice cleanliness depending on your environment? So yes, many Muslims actually take it too far & aren't capable of thinking about their religion besides what their families & communities taught them from childhood.

Very simply, a Muslim's life is based on and runs according to the user's manual provided for him (The Quran). Prophet Mohammed SAW is a basic part of the Quran and the content of the Quran. In that view, obviously like any of the user manuals, Islamic day to day life matters go as mandatory, highly recommend, recommend, and optionals. These assortments are very clear and handy for everyone puts even a little effort to obtain them. As a new comer, it's highly recommend that you be stick to the mandatories which are all quiet clear without any doubt, followed by the highly recommends, where starts the Sunnah. As a specific special and beautiful feature of Islam, is that whatever you will do, will be counted on you (as per your intention) and here comes the spiritual beauty of Islam. No one can play with his own acts intention (It's impossible). Moreover, another basic n beautiful feature of Islam is that a Muslim must strongly realize that Allah SWT, seeing whatever he's doing (with full knowledge of his intentions). As a final conclusion, as a new comer if you stick to the mandatories with pure intentions for Allah SWT, and always keep in mind that Allah SWT is seeing all you are doing, then believe me, you will find yourself step by step adopting all the proper and pure things and methods which a pure true Muslim do.

Most of the Hadith are SINGLE narrations, meaning one person heard the Prophet say something or give a ruling. Single narrations, by definition run the risk of becoming chinese whispers over time. Dr Shabbur himself in another video emphasised the difference between single vs multi witness Hadiths. Much of these rulings really take out so much of the colour and artistic expression from life. Such as a ban on musical instruments, or a ban on drawing animals/humans. Someone told me that even writing fiction is considered sinful, though I can't verify that. Followers of ibn Taymiyyah and ibn Hanbal even maintain philosophy is haram. Though philosophy and science, historically went hand in hand. Perhaps no surprise, the Salafist heartland of Arabia has never been a pioneer in any of the sciences or maths. As for following the Sunnah. Is it really necessary for men in the UK, Pakistan or India to be walking around in jubbahs or calling each other "akhi". There seems to be a blur between Islam and the cultural norms of 7th century Arabia.

We don't differentiate between the prophets, thats Allah command. However prophet Muhammad actions are better recorded and we know through the Quran that Allah gave him wisdom and tremendous faith and taught him all Islamic practices, so we tend to follow the prophet more than any other prophet. We must respect all of them equally, but we still can follow the prophet more closely since a) his time wasn't as far away as say prophet Solomon. b) his records are kept, relatively, accurate compared to the other prophets. I personally don't follow hadiths word to word and I don't believe that all hadiths are correctly preserved and truly from the prophet. Idolatry is one form of polytheism. There are several other forms of polytheism, some clandestine, some visible, that have been mentioned in the glorious Koran. A large number of Muslims worship Muhammad pbuh when they prefer his praise in the form NAATS full of polytheism. Whereas, the glorious Koran categorically states that all praise is for Allah, the Lord of the Universe, and not for his servants and messengers. So the concept of polytheism as ordained in the glorious Koran is not restricted to Idolatry as the speaker is trying to justify.

There seems to be a dichotomy on the Muslim position of Muhammad. On one end Muhammad was just a messenger sent to deliver the message to serve One God. However at the same time his name literally means “praise worthy”, the Muslims say he has 99 names like Allah, The Quran says Allah and The prophet commands are to be obeyed , his name is in the Shahada with Allah, Allah apparently wrote his name on his chair, if you dare say the name Muhammad in any blasphemous way your life will end, and Muslims in 2022 are even going to the Dentist thinking about the Sunnah of Muhammad? Eat how he eat sleep how he sleep? Pray like him and For Him. Allah and his Angels send Salah to the prophet. In the Midst of All of this ‘admiration’ where is the worship of One God? Is it possible to be practice pure monotheism and have that much ‘admiration’ for a human being?

We respect all the Prophets not just Prophet Muhammad. We are just lucky to have a Prophet who's daily life was recorded. If we knew how Ibrahim Moses, Jesus, lived day to day we'd follow that too. And wouldn't you? They lived perfect lives. If you say anything blasphemous about any of the prophets it's a sin, not just Prophet Muhammad.

Muhammad is dead, he was the prophet and messenger of God. His sole duty was to deliver God's message, not his own message, to whomever it reaches. Same as other prophets of God, they are all dead. Their sole duties are over. Now it is up to God's continuous existing messengers to continue reminding God's message to mankind, to whomever it reaches. God's most important message to remember is in the Quran, Never worship or reverence human beings, but Him alone. While praying, do not mention anyone besides Him. Remember God always, day and night. Humans are created weak. They have no share in His Throne. Not even the Angels and the Jinns. For those who frequently bear false witness day and night through their proclamation of faith, by proclaiming the two kalimah shahadas in their contact prayer, etc. ponder over these Reminders from God, God bears witness that there is no god except He, and so do the angels and those who possess knowledge. Truthfully and equitably, He is the absolute god; there is no god but He, the Almighty, Most Wise. (3:18) Anything good that happens to you is from God, and anything bad that happens to you is from you. We have sent you as a messenger to the people,* and God suffices as witness. (4:79) Recall that your Lord summoned all the descendants of Adam, and had them bear witness for themselves: "Am I not your Lord?" They all said, "Yes. We bear witness." Thus, you cannot say on the Day of Resurrection, "We were not aware of this." (7:172) Nor can you say, "It was our parents who practiced idolatry, and we simply followed in their footsteps. Will You punish us because of what others have innovated?" (7:173) We thus explain the revelations, to enable the people to redeem themselves.* (7:174) When they were told, "Lã Elãha Ella Allãh [There is no other god beside God]," they turned arrogant. (37:35) When God ALONE is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter shrink with aversion. But when others are mentioned beside Him, they become satisfied.* (39:45) God judges equitably, while the idols they implore beside Him cannot judge anything. God is the One who is the Hearer, the Seer. (40:20) You shall know that: "There is no other god beside God,"* and ask forgiveness of your sins and the sins of all believing men and women. God is fully aware of your decisions and your ultimate destiny. (47:19) He is the One who sent His messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, to make it prevail over all other religions. God suffices as a witness. (48:28) When the hypocrites come to you they say, "We bear witness that you are the messenger of God."* God knows that you are His messenger, and God bears witness that the hypocrites are liars. (63:1) The places of worship belong to God; do not call on anyone else beside God. (72:18) Greetings from Elias.

Imitation of Muhammad is only considered as idolatry from perspective of the Quranists, who reject the Hadith in general and follow exclusively what have been commanded by Allah, directly in the Quran, but those Muslims who do recognize the Hadith as a reliable source of Islam, and do recognize Muhammad as an infallible example to follow, they're obligated to imitate every behaviour of Muhammad in those hadith-books which have been accepted as sahih by their sect, without any personal prejudice.

For the idolaters, the polytheists, the hypocrites, kindly ponder over these Reminders from God so that you may redeem your souls, Those who disbelieve will be told, "God's abhorrence towards you is even worse than your own abhorrence towards yourselves. For you were invited to believe, but you chose to disbelieve." (40:10) They will say, "Our Lord, you have put us to death twice,* and You gave us two lives; now we have confessed our sins. Is there any way out?" (40:11) This is because when God ALONE was advocated, you disbelieved, but when others were mentioned beside Him, you believed. Therefore, God's judgment has been issued; He is the Most High, the Great. (40:12) He is the One who continuously shows you His proofs, and sends down to you from the sky provisions. Only those who totally submit will be able to take heed. (40:13) Therefore, you shall devote your worship absolutely to God ALONE, even if the disbelievers dislike it. (40:14) Greetings from Elias.

Clearly emulating the exemplary conduct of a human prophet has nothing to do with worshiping the person of the prophet 🙄 . Allah directs Muslims to observe the example of the prophet PBUH. ﴿ لَّقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِي رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٞ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرۡجُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَ وَذَكَرَ ٱللَّهَ كَثِيرٗا ﴾ [ الأحزاب: 21] (Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for any one whose hope is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the Praise of Allah.) Al-Ahzab 21 Allah directs the prophet to tell the believing community to follow him to attain the love of Allah قُلْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ اللَّهَ فَاتَّبِعُونِي يُحْبِبْكُمُ اللَّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ ۗ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ (ال عمران ٣١) (Say (O Muhammad): "If ye do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.") Aal-Imraan 31. There is substantial emphasis on the importance of the Sunnah in the literature to prevent the dilution of this faith. The following is one example of such a prophetic direction. I do agree that we are encouraged to pursue knowledge and science including modern means of treating ailments and disease there is evidence of such advice in the Sunnah as the following narration indicates on the matter of agricultural practices for instance. Though I am not so certain the prophet PBUH or any of the previous prophets would be inclined to use the modern day toothbrush over the organic miswak (arak) given the resulting heaps of waste plastic brushes that end up in landfills.

Now Shabir Ally as a sane man says that we have to treat new Muslims in a special way because everything is new to them, I like that and agree completely. He says : 1:29 wen a person comes in to the community like this, we should distinguish between our own comfort level and that person's comfort level, so our own confronting level is what we've lived with in Muslim societies... its natural for us We're breathing it, but for the new person everything is gonna come as a surprise, so don't put to many surprises ... He figured it out himself, logic says so. But the paradox is when Allah does the same thing when the message was sent down in the first place, where was everything new to people, Shabir Ally does not differentiate he strongly denies and does not accept it!!! I am talking here about the doctrine of abrogation.

With all due respect I personally think the prophet of Islam composed the Quran himself because he tells the believers in many passages to revere him and permit himself to marry many times and to justify his action he is quick to bring another verse. No other Abrahamic religion put so much praise on the prophet the way Muslim do where each time his name is mentioned it follows with the praise to a point that one thinks he is better than even God himself.

Did you notice there is a relatively new English translation of the Quran by Mustafa Khattab (MK) - his translation has put in MANY places, the word "O Prophet" (eg 5:4; 5:27). The Arabic word *nabiyy* is not found in those affected verses, so the translator has purposely _inserted_ such non existant word in the translation. By inserting the quote, it looks as if the translator is putting an impression that God is talking only to the Prophet (pbuh) The Quran is meant for mankind, not for the Prophet (pbuh) exclusively. Due to the above issue, there are MANY verses translated by MK with the quote "O Prophet". I find it strange if we read the Quran verses and there are many instances we have this.. O Prophet ...O Prophet ....O Prophet ...occurring within the chapters of the Quran.. it seems almost like it is asking the reader to magnify the Prophet (pbuh)!. Fortunately we did not see (at this time) yet, the non existent quote in the original Arabic verse of the Quran

The best practicing Muslim is Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and won't any Muslim try to emulate him, and how is that a form of worship? I personally think there is an unintended efforts here to put the teachings and practices of Prophet SAW aside to ease oneself. 1) No Muslim would ever worship the Prophet. 2) No Muslim would put aside a modern attested medicine to search for what the Prophet might have used to cure certain disease. Someone might study about it but not when someone is need of the medication. You would have to check yourself well if you as a Muslim thinks oh the Prophet lived a primitive life and why should I emulate that in this modern age.
