I don't know how it is in other , but in Arizona a person have to come meet with brothers for dinner for at least 6 months before he can petition to join the lodge. By doing this the brothers can really find out what type of person the individual is. This method also test the individual determination, as well as the individual patience.

Thank you Worshipful for the best Masonic education series. On the issue of the committee report, do the members of the committee get to cast a ballot on the petition they have worked on?
@drewhigginbotham37732 жыл бұрын
Our committees will either report favorable or unfavorable. Specifics are usually discussed in private, but if the WM addresses the committee in lodge as to why, we'd say why. As for felonies, we don't approve felonies, but we've approved misdemeanors that happened over 10 years ago, but nothing violent or drug related.

@WhatisaMason5 жыл бұрын
It is possible to find a lodge where you are stationed, even if you are overseas. Since you are likely to be stationed there for a while, it seems more practical to find a lodge there, rather than wait until you are home for good.

Nice job on this Jared. In my lodge if the investigation committee decided that the petitioner does not have the requisite qualifications for the prayer of his petition to be answered, we as lodge members never know why. The committee may inform the Secretary and WM of their reasons, but they may not. The WM trusts the judgement of the committee and the petition ends there without a vote. It is also possible for the Grand Lodge to report unfavorably, again their reasons may or may not be made known to the Secretary and WM and, again this stops a petition before a vote occurs. As far as removing someone, I have only been a MM for 11 months, so have not seen this in my lodge, other than suspensions for not paying dues. That is one sure way to be suspended!
@WhatisaMason7 жыл бұрын
How does it work that the Grand Lodge offers an opinion as well? Is that a part of the investigation? Around this part of the globe I would imagine that folks would get quite upset if the GL was trying to say who the lodge could or could not make a Mason - but I suppose if such a rule did exist that it would have had to have come from the craft originally, as some point in history. Here the committee give a blanket "favorable or un-favorable" report, but members are free to inquire further before the vote. And, as you say, here a vote will be taken either way.
@keithcurtis66717 жыл бұрын
I am not sure where it originates but in conjunction with the investigation committee report the Secretary sends the details regarding a petitioner to the Grand Lodge and they do an investigation, mostly surrounding whether or not that person had petitioned and been rejected by another lodge under the Grand Lodge. If the Grand Lodge objects we DO NOT vote, and if the Investigation finds not in favor, we DO NOT vote.

Hey Jered, I have a question. Suppossed a man joins a lodge who let him join knowing he has a past but has proven himself and was accepted, he has a felony on his (legal) record but the lodge allows him to join. He is a great mason and is of good character with the lodge for yrs but has to relocate to another state. Does the lodge in the state where he's going perform a bkgrnd ck, or is he under obligation to inform the new lodge?
@WhatisaMason6 жыл бұрын
Here is what I think would happen, but I could be wrong: 1) Brother knows he is going to be moving 2) Brother has his lodge secretary fill out a form. Something like a "Demit and Certificate of Good Standing" 3) Brother takes form from lodge to current GL and gets another certificate from the GL. 4) Brother goes to new lodge and presents certificate 4a) Depending on the jurisdiction, skip to #8 5) New lodge forwards the form to their GL 6) New GL contacts old GL to confirm it is a true form 7) New GL reports back to new lodge 8) Lodge reads report into record and votes on accepting him as a member So - no interview. But - I could be wrong! Here is an example of the type of certificate a member in MS would get if they were looking to move out of the state: msgrandlodge.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/no5.pdf

Are reformed criminals, who can provide a very large amount of evidence of massive character change and community works, who have a long period of many many years since those offences able to be seriously considered or admitted into the Lodge as members? In particular if that individual has many other positive connections to the lodge?
@WhatisaMason7 жыл бұрын
It depends wholly on the state/country. Some see a conviction, especially a felony, as a no-go. Others put a time stipulation on it or permit the lodge to make the final decision. Simple fact is: you will simply have to ask someone at the lodge you plan to join, or call the Grand Secretary, whose contact information can usually be found on your state/countries website.

I honestly cannot say. My lodge does not perform background checks, but relies solely on the petitioner to tell the truth. I'm not sure if an expunged record will show up, but be listed as expunged, or not be listed at all. What I can say is that if you claim you don't have any Felonies, but one does show up, you'll be deemed a liar and likely won't make it into the lodge.

I wouldn't suggest just starting from scratch. If I were you, I would contact the Grand Secretary of the state your old lodge was in. Tell him what you told me. He'll have your records and be able to provide you with the correct form, signed and embossed. You'll then take that to the new lodge you want to join, and they'll simply vote you in on your application for membership. You'll pay the dues and boom - you're done! I hope that helps in some way!

@WhatisaMason7 жыл бұрын
I joined Scottish Rite first. Why? Because it came up first in the calendar. Sad and simple, right? Finishing the YR first as a "completion" of the symbolic lodge sounds all well and good - and the degree work will be a lot more similar to what you are familiar with - but just know that the SR makes the same claim. The "Lodge of Perfection" (up to and including the 14th Degree in the SR) is the completion and perfection of the Symbolic Lodge, as far as SR is concerned.

The easiest (perhaps) way of saying it is: If you join York Rite the ritual will seem very similar in style. In Scottish Rite it will seem very different. But with either you walk away with more light. Because of the similar format going through the YR might first may be more beneficial to most.

Thank you so much for your videos, they have only reinforced my decision to request admission to the craft. However, can you differentiate between people who are FELONS (convicted of a felony) vs. someone who was charged with a misdemeanor (fight/challenging to a fight in public) over 13 years ago with mandatory anger management classes . If "No Felons" is a blanket term used for even those with misdemeanors, or various traffic violations, then I'm out of luck. Most sites only mention felons but do not elaborate on lesser "crimes." Technically, even speeding or not carrying insurance card is a "crime"
@garfieldwithissuez7 жыл бұрын
Zero Three the rules on felons differ from one grand jurisdiction to another. Its important that we know you're honest.
@garfieldwithissuez7 жыл бұрын
Zero Three in Texas you must disclose past legal trouble but as brother Jared said the lodge votes.
@keithcurtis66717 жыл бұрын
1) A misdemeanor is not a felony, so one convicted of a misdemeanor is not, by definition a "felon". 2) Be honest about your past, it will likely show up in a background check anyway. 3) Be ready to explain how you have learned from your past and what you have done to change. You are correct, a crime is a crime and we do not want "criminals" in our midst. They put us personally at risk and mar our reputation. So you must be able to explain yourself and give the lodge good reason why these things were mistakes from your past, not an indication of your current character as a man.
@WhatisaMason7 жыл бұрын
Here in MS is it taken literally - that is "convicted of a felony".

We don't have that wording in Texas. We ask about criminal background and if you lie you will be kicked out. A person can be a felon for many reasons that don't involve moral turpitude.

@WhatisaMason7 жыл бұрын
The person having the grudge should be spoken to by a Master Mason. However, there is no requirement for any Freemason to actually like another one. They must, however, remain cordial and polite, especially in public and certainly always inside of a lodge. If the man is being rude in lodge or in public and refuses council then here in MS the issue would be submitted to the lodges Complains and Offences committee, whose job it is to investigate the matter and report back to the lodge.

Hope to hear from you and thank you again.

Yes, you can join here in the USA. If I were you, I would. Better to go back to Ghana as a MM and find a lodge than have to navigate their requirements to joining. You may have to "re-learn the ritual", so to speak, as it is different in every jurisdiction, but you will be a MM, nonetheless. Should you opt not to do that, yes, you can still just visit various lodges and fellowship.

I asked my dads buddy to join. He said he'd sign my petition. So whats the next step? They do a background check right? I have no felonies and am hilarious and would've found this brotherhood interesting years ago of i knew about it. He also told me not to look online for info on it. So they don't choose based on one's status? I would basically throw myself full blown into it and get the most out of it.
@WhatisaMason6 жыл бұрын
Well, you also have to sign that petition - so if you haven't, then that is the next step. If they do criminal background checks, then yes, that would be a part of the "investigation". You'll also have to speak to a few other lodge members who function as a committee to meet with you and make a recommendation back to the lodge. I have a video on that. Then the lodge votes on you, and you are in. Could take a couple of weeks or months, depending. Not looking online is good advice. That may seem odd coming from a guy who puts stuff online - but the fact is, unless you are in Mississippi then everything I say could be moot. Best to learn it the way they do it in your state, not mine. Then come back to the videos and enjoy the differences, pick up new concepts, etc.

@@WhatisaMason well idk whether i should try and join his lodge or one that's a little closer to me. I'd like to be in my dads friends lodge cause i know him therefore making it a bit more comfortable. I actually don't even have the petition. That's just what he told me. I didn't even know what it was. I just stopped up at his buisness and asked him about joining and told him its something i been thinking about. As far as the internet advice I already heard all the crazy conspiracies about it...lol. And they seem to be religious fanatic people that only listen to the Albert Pike quote about lucifer really being the light that you seek. Btw.. what is up with him saying that?
@WhatisaMason6 жыл бұрын
He didn't say THAT. All he did was provide what was supposed to be a clarification - but in the way Pike wrote, many would argue that nothing is "clear". Namely in Morals & Dogma, because the vast majority of that book is not Pike's own word - it is a compilation of dozens of sources, coupled with Pike's opinion. As is typical, a little context is what matters. Here are the lines you are referring to: "LUCIFER, the Light-bearer!" -and- "Lucifer, the Son of the Morning! Is it he who bears the Light, and with its splendors intolerable blinds feeble, sensual, or selfish Souls? Doubt it not!" Putting those lines together like that sure does make it sound like he's trying to reveal that Lucifer is the Light Masons are supposed to be seeking - but that is not it at all. Here is the line that precedes it: "The Apocalypse is, to those who receive the nineteenth Degree, the Apotheosis of that Sublime Faith which aspires to God alone, and despises all the pomps and works of Lucifer." And, between those two lines above is this one "Strange and mysterious name to give to the Spirit of Darkness!" Lastly, the "Doubt it not!" is not the end of that sentence, it actually continues past the exclamation point. Here is the full paragraph in question: "The Apocalypse is, to those who receive the nineteenth Degree, the Apotheosis of that Sublime Faith which aspires to God alone, and despises all the pomps and works of Lucifer. LUCIFER, the Light-bearer! Strange and mysterious name to give to the Spirit of Darkness! Lucifer, the Son of the Morning! Is it he who bears the Light, and with its splendors intolerable blinds feeble, sensual, or selfish Souls? Doubt it not! for traditions are full of Divine Revelations and Inspirations: and Inspiration is not of one Age nor of one Creed. Plato and Philo, also, were inspired." Anyhow, feel free to look up the origins and meanings of the word Lucifer. You'll find that Venus was called Lucifer, and a lot of what you see above - such as Lucifer literally meaning "bearer of light". The challenge with this section, and indeed with many sections in Morals & Dogma, is the play on words. He starts by stating his position - the works of Lucifer (the Christian fallen Arch Angel - Satan - The Devil) are pomp (ostentatious boastfulness or vanity). Knowing that, with Faith in God, is the Apotheosis (the maximum of Faith), are the conditions under which the Apocalypse will be held (and why God, or Good, will win). Then, in typical Pike fashion, he goes off on a tangent about how strange it is for Lucifer to be the name given to the supreme evil, since in times past it instead represented light itself in a very positive way. He talks about how the meaning of the name is translated to "light-bearer". He talks about how the physical planet Venus was called Lucifer. Then comes the question many people don't read as a question, but instead, incorrectly, as a statement. The question is "Is it he who bears the Light, and with its splendors intolerable blinds feeble, sensual, or selfish Souls?" That's very contemplative statement. Is it? Well, does it? Is that not how the Bible teaches that Lucifer will work - manipulating the bad to make it look like the good, blinding the feeble, sensual, or selfish soul? Then Pike drops the hammer: "Doubt it not!" Anyhow - here is a really good write up that I generally agree with, and that I recommend you take the time to read: albertpike.wordpress.com/albert-pike-lucifer/ If you would like to learn more about how it is that this 1 sentence, amid some 800 pages of sentences, of only 1 of several books, lectures, speeches, and letters by Albert Pike, managed to be turned into this crazy conspiracy mess, read this book: amzn.to/2PeURlO Enjoy!
@manicmurph6 жыл бұрын
@@WhatisaMason Wow man. You explained that very well! I knew it was people just cherry picking sentences out of the book to fit their own agenda. Like some of these Christian conspiracy channels think freemasons run everything and they're all evil...lol!And yes the wording is kind of complicated. You gotta really sit there and read it a few times to understand what he's saying. If anyone needs masonry its me. I fucked up the first part of my life by getting hooked on opiates. I've had friends die and friends get married and have kids all while i was being doped up from prescribed pharmaceuticals i didn't need. Even though I've been off it since 2006 I unfortunately made the biggest mistake of my life by getting on suboxone first then methadone. I've been weaning down this whole year an will be off soon. If anyone needs to come out of the darkness and into the light its me. I think the whole "acting out a play" and all that is cool as hell. It's symbolic and to me seems like it has a lot more meaning to the individual than going to a regular church or social club. It also bonds you to the guys which i totally understand. I feel like someone like me would get so much more out of being a mason at this point in my life than not. I need a social setting where there are people i can trust and confide in. I love the mysterious aspect as well. I even think the square and compass logo looks sweet! Would totally rock a bumper sticker on my car...lol.

@@vestland3877 yeah, i already have.. i appriciate the advice. most people will make it sound impossible to become a mason with a past, but that couldn't be further from the truth. it has been less of an issue at lodge than it ever was in the job field, which was the opposite of my expectations based on what i read so many times online. its much more of a case by case thing than it is a no tolerance at all thing (which is what alot of people will lead you to believe). if i can help motivate anyone, just don't give up.

What if I commit a felony 20 years ago. Now my record is sealed. do I put a yes or no on the petition.
@WhatisaMason6 жыл бұрын
If it were me, I would put a yes, but then provide an explanation in person.
@milesconerly58186 жыл бұрын
Though the record is sealed, the existence of a conviction is still noted. Here in Texas, the question is "Have you ever been *charged* with a felony?" and then gives a place for date and explanation. They're looking for how long ago and the characteristics of the crime (i.e. moral turpitude).

How do you deal with adultery?

Should such an even take place it should be reported to the Master of the Lodge. He would then set up an investigation committee who, on finding evidence, would charge him with Unmasonic Conduct, leading to a trial and his ultimate removal from the Fraternity. Of course every lodge is different and I cannot say what judgement any individual lodge will come to.

What is a Mason there is absolutely no way that the older generations are gonna fix the bleeding that guisering out of control. 3 gens of masons only set it up for failure. my generation simply does not trust freemasons, theyre not coming even with the first kingsmen film or da vinci code films. foucoults pendulum should of been more popular but no one really talks about it. freemasonry had manly p hall, what have they done for his legacy.

What is a Mason i dont know if i can make it in this state with most of the people involved. a few guys got mad when i looked at a picture on a wall anyone can see and they didnt like me looking at books there too. its a sad state of affairs in this area. its the internal qualities, not outter appearances that makes a man able to be one, i thought. theres too many people ive seen here who dont take things that the faternity teaches to heart. i was honest about everything, and these closed minded people ruin things. i wanted be like manly p hall, and that ruffles too many feathers. a gnostic group scratches my itches without any runaround. almost everyone did take my word i believed in god, its humanity who i dont trust. i wanted to these guys, but i cant. plus guns in lodges dont go well with william j's....
@freewilliam937 жыл бұрын
i also dont want to join the shrine like they wanted to, sorry but unlike the kingsmen, i didnt join a fraternity to shoot guns. "join the shrine, we dont have as much to do." ill fuckin say! they dont do jack s for health care for everyone, small short sightedness. then a poor guy joins you guys here, and theyre worried im gonna take money even tho.....no i wont say it here, but i did contact some brothers about what me and others overheard during a meeting. im not gonna be scapeGOAT for someone elses sins. theres literally no reason to go back to them in this area. at. all.

something i will say tho is that a 32 degreer told a guy who showed up and didnt know ANYTHING about freemasonry but was just looking to join cause he thought it would help him with something, you know what no. ill stop here...but those two shouldnt be in. i will say and stand by that....that 32 dude blackballed hispanics and the lodge kept him in cause hes a fun guy. they just moved it to 3 balls and i bet they put some ink on the black cube and so he got caught in the meeting.....and hes in and im not going back to that lodge.
@WhatisaMason7 жыл бұрын
It is true that any single member can stop someone from being accepted. However, nobody should ever know who cast a "no" vote - that is the whole point of the balls and cubes.

Hello, I’m à African who live in New York since 5 years now. Im married, my wife ( US citizen) have 2 kids and we about to have a kid together soon. My question: Can I be a mason if I’m not a US citizen, and when English is my second language??

Yes, you can, but you should check with the Grand Lodge of NY to learn about any requirements they might have that is specific for them.

Freemasons are like everybody else. You'll find intense and deep relationships just as much as you'll find Brethren who are divorced.
